why no edit option?

I've seen this question asked several times but never an explanation. Every other forum I have used has this facility and it is so useful - either to correct an error or add a bit more information.
Gransnet is probably the largest and best funded forum I use so why can't this be done??

It doesn’t matter. They won’t update anything.

They won’t even look into existing functions which are malfunctioning, or not functioning at all.

For example the Active List has not worked correctly for years now, and some threads do not appear at all; and the Search Function does not work at all for many posters, myself included.

I use preview message sometimes, if i am writing something a bit long and complicated.

I take FCs points.

That's discouraging!

Spot on FannyC. Might as well start a thread called Brick Wall so we can all come on and bash our heads against it when it comes to site stuff. hmm

I have mixed feelings on this.
I do kick myself when typos or autocorrect make a nonsense of what I have posted and find it particularly annoying in thread titles which do not feature in the Preview Message option and the mistakes leap out reproachfully ever after.
The Preview button is pretty foolproof and somehow that makes it easier to check what is to appear.
However, an Edit function, such as that on Facebook can make a nonsense of a discussion.
One person says X , another replies or comments, the first person edits and changes their post so the reply is no longer relevant.
Despite the inconvenience I still think there is the risk of people wrong footing others, whether accidentally or by design, by editing/changing and reluctantly I have come to the conclusion that we must stick by what we first write.
There is always the option of “reporting” yourself and having a post removed if you have second thoughts.

They are a bunch of old grannies, obviously. Too hard for them.

Farmor15 Fri 28-Jul-23 10:19:59

I agree with Foxygloves - if we were allowed to edit our posts it could lead to all kinds of rows! Who said what, when? It's bad enough as it is, with some members who trawl through previous threads by a poster to find contradictions!

There is the facility to ask Gransnet to edit a title if it's wrong or misleading. I nearly always use the preview option - easy to re-read and correct mistakes.

A lot of boards have an edit feature that can only be used for five minutes, or that can't be used after someone has replied. The only boards I've used that have a completely open edit function are ones where everyone has known one another for years and there is trust. It wouldn't work here, as it is too big.

I use the preview feature for longer posts, but even then typos and awkward phrasing can easily slip through. A five minute edit feature would be really useful.

Doodledog Fri 28-Jul-23 10:53:06

Oh, and if we had an edit feature I would have edited to say that they usually show if a post has been edited with a tag on the bottom saying 'edited by Doodledog 3 times' or giving the time of the edit. That curbs malicious editing.

Jackiest Fri 28-Jul-23 10:58:44

Needs to be done like facebook does it and you can look back at the edits so no cheating.

icanhandthemback Fri 28-Jul-23 11:02:42

I'd like to be able to get back to where I last "saved" on a thread let alone be able to edit a post!

Ailidh Fri 28-Jul-23 11:12:12

I take the point about how an edit option could be misused but some forums, like TripAdvisor and DigitalSpy for example, have a short edit window, about 15 minutes, which I would find helpful on GN.

Although I do check what I write, because I'm a grammar and spelling enthusiast (yes, I do know the correct plural of "forum"), inevitably a mistake only leaps out at me once I've hit "submit".....

I do this using the bookmark function.

Absolutely. Search function doesn’t work for me either.

Doodledog Fri 28-Jul-23 13:30:58

Nor me.

BlueBelle Fri 28-Jul-23 13:35:37

This has come up so regularly for the last ten years or maybe more
No they stubbornly won’t give us an edit button Does Mumsnet have one ?

inishowen Fri 28-Jul-23 13:38:46

I'm on mumsnet too and it seems much more user friendly.

FannyCornforth Fri 28-Jul-23 13:42:45

There is little or no revenue from us.

We are a bit of a charity case I imagine.

We might even be tax deductible or something 🤔

ExDancer Fri 28-Jul-23 13:48:20

I belong to a Pet's forum, and they have a function that gives the poster five minutes in which to edit their posts.
So it CAN be done!

welbeck Fri 28-Jul-23 13:52:02

i don't like how MN is now.
i found it much easier before, with the first/last/next page options.
the layout is awkward.
i cannot click on the next page without going into settings, as the numbers disappear under advertisements.
so i have to go into settings to change the zoom to for the page numbers to come out from under the adverts, then having got to the next page, go into settings again.
otherwise i can only see 3 readable lines at a time, which is annoying. and so on for each page.
i mostly give up.

So do I but it doesn't work. It will take me to a page but I have to read through to find the word "saved" because it doesn't take me to the actual post I bookmarked.

Us lot tax deductible? probably don't think we are worth it grin

Even if you use the preview facility most of the time there is always the odd occasion when you (I) are less attentive and hit the post button immediately.

A five minute limit is useful as on some other sites but won't happen here, pointless asking.

Doodledog Sat 29-Jul-23 11:29:16

On one hand we are constantly being told (particularly on MN) that we are all millionaires with untold disposable incomes, and on the other that we are not cost-effective when it comes to ad revenue. Both can't be true.

FannyCornforth Sat 29-Jul-23 11:35:48

Doodledog I’ve thought about that too.
I would have thought, that in general, us Gen Xers and Boomers would have more disposable income…
But I suppose that we don’t have the same ‘foot fall’ as MN
