Hi all,

We're sorry for the enormous amount of overnight spam - we're working our way through removing it all now.

We'll be discussing how we can prevent this in future, so please bear with us.

Thanks for all of your reports and patience here.

I don’t know - it seems easy to my simple mind.

Pittcity Thu 02-May-24 20:43:48

They are still posting. I've just reported another one, timestamped 20.40

Hi all

We haven't got an update for you yet - but can assure you that it's a high priority given the level of spam. We're still discussing how to implement our spam prevention features (Gransnet is an old site and doing this can take some time). We'll be back soon with a more detailed update as soon as we can. In the meantime, we really appreciate your patience.

Thank you so much!

I have just reported the latest deluge of spam spells, without posting reported on the individual threads 😡

Chestnut Thu 09-May-24 14:21:36

I can only suggest that new users have their posts checked before they get posted. Also, a text message sent to a mobile phone to verify the user before their username is accepted.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 09-May-24 14:30:46

The Active list now consists almost entirely of spam threads. I simply cannot be bothered to report so many. GN must be able to do something. Why are they not on the lookout for these threads and deleting them immediately?

Mizuna Thu 09-May-24 14:39:41

I don't know anything about Gransnet's origins and was interested to hear it called an 'old site'. Sound like it needs a complete overhaul.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 09-May-24 14:40:23

This is getting flipping ridiculous now😡😡😡

Grandmabatty Thu 09-May-24 14:45:54

I think I'll come off gransnet until, if ever, they get rid of the constant spam. I find it intensely irritating

YorkLady Thu 09-May-24 14:49:02

It’s just annoying. Why are you not looking out for these. You are obviously being targeted.

I always get the impression they are not waiting by the computer or desk.
That is my impression.

I was just thinking the same. It's making the site virtually unreadable now. As GSM pointed out, almost the whole Active list was just one spam thread after another. Who can be bothered to sift through all that to find the real threads? It's a nonsense.

Jaxjacky Thu 09-May-24 15:34:51

‘Gransnet is an old site’ cant you upgrade it to whatever system Mumsnet is on? That site doesn’t get this issue, if it needs a shutdown for the upgrade, so be it.
Or, aren’t we worth the investment.

Chestnut Thu 09-May-24 15:36:27

For goodness sake, be patient. I came back an hour later and they're all gone. No need to throw a hissy fit. Gransnet are doing their best to tackle them and find a solution.

Smileless2012 Thu 09-May-24 15:38:57

Thank you GNHQ.

They're clearly doing their best in what appears to be extremely trying circumstances.

Ziplok Thu 09-May-24 15:45:15

I agree with Chestnut. These things can’t always be dealt with quickly, but GNHQ are aware of the problem and working on it. We really do have to be patient.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 09-May-24 15:48:40

Thanks GN 👍

Gransnet is an old site

I suppose that’s appropriate, seeing as most of its readers are ‘oldies’.

grin

But this is happening several times a day! It's frustrating to say the least. And I say this as someone who has run websites and currently admins on various social media forums.

Gransnet is an old site and doing this can take some time)

Anyone on here care to explain this please?

I am not tech enough to understand the time element or the complications.

It's not such an old site as Mumsnet which seems to have sussed it (and has far more updates than GN).

We're not old, we're the poor relations.

Callistemon21 Thu 09-May-24 17:57:00

Even the adverts inflicted on us are relics of the past.

The Software is old. It’s like when you want to load an app on your devices but can’t because it’s too old.

Jaxjacky Thu 09-May-24 18:58:48

It’s not just the spam, it’s the red square/Jet 2 advert every five minutes or so.
