With the stress and uncertainty around social isolation and lockdown, more of us than ever before have found ourselves comfort eating. Our latest research shows that 43% of us are snacking more than usual and 30% are struggling to eat a healthy diet. It’s all too easy to reach for a biscuit, and then another, then another. And suddenly the packet is gone. With that in mind, Soreen would like to hear your tips for healthy snacking, whether that’s ensuring guilt-free portion sizes or resisting the call of the biscuit tin.

Here’s what Soreen has to say: “Soreen, British baker of the Original Malt Loaf, has been enjoyed as a teatime treat in homes for over 80 years. Whilst many of us know that a slice of deliciously squidgy Soreen is perfect with a cuppa, it’s less well known that Soreen is a much healthier option than other sweet treats.

Our Malt Loaf contains over 40% less sugar and 80% less fat than the average cake. Plus if you’re looking for a tasty portion controlled snack, our individually wrapped Lunchbox Loaves are less than 100 calories each and our Sliced Loaf is just 65 calories per slice.

We know that for many of you the only way to eat Soreen is with butter! Well you’ll be pleased to hear that two buttered slices of malt loaf come in at just 150 calories and contain 40% less sugar and 50% less fat than the average slice of cake.

So you can still enjoy Soreen as a healthier swap without compromising on taste!”

Do you find portion controlled snacks help you control your snacking? How do you prevent the temptation of yet another biscuit? Do you find yourself wanting a snack when you know you’re definitely not hungry? How do you manage it?

Whatever your tips for healthy snacking, share them with Soreen in the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £100 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I bake my own cakes so know the ingredients and tend to have a small slice or cupcake with a coffee. Mostly for healthier snacking I make up tupperware boxes with different items - e.g. a box of green salad leaves with fresh raw garden peas, quartered cherry tomatoes & radishes, fresh baby beetroot, a sprinkling of mixed seeds & a few peanuts; or a winter salad with finely sliced/chopped white cabbage, red cabbage, carrot, different coloured peppers slices of apple, pear, celery, mixed nuts (I share my mixed nuts and monkey nuts with the squirrel!); or fresh fruit salads with as many fruits as I have (cherries & berries with grapes and chunks or different melons is my favourite). Luckily I like most fruits (except avocado pears) so can vary the contents and not get bored with any combination, and can have sweet fruits or citrus ones or a mixture. Sometimes I'll add slices of boiled egg or ham or a few prawns but usually veggie variations. I find these foods take longer to eat so the snack lasts a lot longer than having a few biscuits etc. I also like that I can pick at it - meaning there will be times I only want a few mouthfuls and other times I'll work my way through the box during a film. If I need extras for my snacking I'll either add something like an oven-baked roll to my salad or have a toasted hot cross bun with honey or jam.

Try to have a piece of fruit, doesn't always work

I make my snacks up, so a couple of crackers with cheese or a tiny tub of grapes and cherry tomatoes. By portion controlling regularly I find I'm less likely to over eat.

Snack as much and as often as you like - when you're full stop. It's a good idea to snack on things that are good for your soul.

I am currently going through the 'hungry' stage of cutting down sugar. When I feel myself reaching for a snack I take a spoonful of seeds such as pumpkin or pomegranate seeds and spend time chewing until the 'psychological' hunger subsides. Then if I'm genuinely hungry I can eat something else like a banana to top up until mealtime.

josiew Tue 16-Jun-20 12:00:40

I try not to snack at all, but if I am feeling peckish, a banana or a drink of fruit juice will do.

Add low fat spread and sliced banana

Fresh fruit and a little low calorie cream cheese on top of my Soreen gives me the pick up I need without too many calories!

Any fruit is the ideal accompaniment to a slice of delicious Soreen, and makes the perfect balanced snack!

cozitsme Tue 16-Jun-20 14:43:25

Depending on whether I want sweet or savoury, my favourite snacks are pickled gherkins, olives and malted fruit loaf.

Soreen with mashed banana and sliced strawberries

GeminiJen Tue 16-Jun-20 15:17:49

I try not to snack between meals, but have been known to succumb. Any snacks tend to be in the evening just before bed: a glass of wine, say, with nuts or olives. Mind you, I could be tempted by the new low calorie Soreen!

I eat tuna when i need to snack with some hot red pepper over it

carol057 Tue 16-Jun-20 16:06:32

Soreen loaf, of any kind, made into bread and butter pudding...without much butter...delicious and filling, hot and especially cold. Makes you feel like you've eaten well and keeps you full for ages so stops you from sneaking biscuits or cakes.

I am a bit of a snacker but try to limit myself. I do love malt loaf but hate butter on sweet things so I usually eat it plain and pretend it’s cake!

Sucellos Tue 16-Jun-20 16:15:06

I like to snack on a small piece of fresh French stick bread with a thin piece of cedar!

lizzie111 Tue 16-Jun-20 16:52:12

Soreen meatloaf is a big family favourite but the lunch box size are great as a healthy snack for the grandkids. Much better than sweets

Willpower is the biggest thing! It's taken me years to get mine under control...
When losing my weight I cut out snacks in the week completely and just allowed them as a treat to myself at the weekend - knowing that I had something to look forward to was enough motivation. I do try and snack a little healthier though - nuts & seeds, a rice cake with some peanut butter on or a small piece of flapjack

tinytina Tue 16-Jun-20 19:16:17

I like to snack on nuts, almonds, Brazil’s, hazelnuts or walnuts,
they help to lower cholesterol and they take a while to chew so by the time I have had 4 or 5 my munchies have gone

Gig1 Tue 16-Jun-20 19:26:34

Sticks of celery with cream cheese in the groove does it for me. Much better to make the effort to chew something. It takes longer and gives time for your brain to accept you’re satisfied.

My teatime treat is buttered Soreen with sliced banana on top.
