With the stress and uncertainty around social isolation and lockdown, more of us than ever before have found ourselves comfort eating. Our latest research shows that 43% of us are snacking more than usual and 30% are struggling to eat a healthy diet. It’s all too easy to reach for a biscuit, and then another, then another. And suddenly the packet is gone. With that in mind, Soreen would like to hear your tips for healthy snacking, whether that’s ensuring guilt-free portion sizes or resisting the call of the biscuit tin.

Here’s what Soreen has to say: “Soreen, British baker of the Original Malt Loaf, has been enjoyed as a teatime treat in homes for over 80 years. Whilst many of us know that a slice of deliciously squidgy Soreen is perfect with a cuppa, it’s less well known that Soreen is a much healthier option than other sweet treats.

Our Malt Loaf contains over 40% less sugar and 80% less fat than the average cake. Plus if you’re looking for a tasty portion controlled snack, our individually wrapped Lunchbox Loaves are less than 100 calories each and our Sliced Loaf is just 65 calories per slice.

We know that for many of you the only way to eat Soreen is with butter! Well you’ll be pleased to hear that two buttered slices of malt loaf come in at just 150 calories and contain 40% less sugar and 50% less fat than the average slice of cake.

So you can still enjoy Soreen as a healthier swap without compromising on taste!”

Do you find portion controlled snacks help you control your snacking? How do you prevent the temptation of yet another biscuit? Do you find yourself wanting a snack when you know you’re definitely not hungry? How do you manage it?

Whatever your tips for healthy snacking, share them with Soreen in the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £100 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I started last summer trying to cut sugars out of my diet, I've lost a stone since then. It's been harder keeping to my regime during lock down, I have started having ryvita crackers for lunch instead of bread/sandwiches.

little portions kept of nuts/berries etc so I can just pick up one pack when needed. also if you freeze separate squares of choc you can take one at a time

This is a feel good snack that is great comfort food.

I cook my own banana bread and you don't need to add any sugar as the bananas are sweet enough. When its fresh out of the oven the crispy end slice is the best.

I don't snack as I'm trying to keep my weight and my waist measurement down. If you stick to the 80/20 rule (eating healthily 80% of the time) then you can enjoy the occasional treat, so if you want a nice piece of buttered malt loaf, then have it, just not every day. Food is to be enjoyed and the fruity, malty flavour of Soreen is rather special!

Have healthy snacks already prepared in the fridge in boxes (chopped carrot sticks, chopped melon) . It sounds silly but it means there's something healthy within easy reach.

Be prepared. I have a pot of cherry tomatoes ready for a snack if I need it. If you do want a treat for something sweet, instead of having a whole chocolate bar, cut it up into sections and wrap in foil and just have one little piece at a time.

Cut two thickish slices. Sandwich together with jam, lemon curd or marmalade. Dip in a sweetened batter and deep fry until crispy. Sprinkle with sugar and eat while still warm.

For a healthier snack use honey instead.

Malt loaf with light cream cheese is all I need for breakfast. Fights over who has the end bits though

Alishka Tue 16-Jun-20 22:58:06

Thin slices of Soreen topped with thick slabs of salted butter with a pot of tea in the afternoon, anyone? No? Well, I suppose I'll have to eat it all myself wink

For the children, i have set up a tuck shop, similar to what they would have at school. They are given a budget, like £1, and have to use that to buy their snacks from a selection, ranging from 20/50p.
This not only helps them with their maths, it also teaches them the value of money, then when it is all gone, they cant have anymore snacks.
It is their choice whether to spend it all in one go or eek it out smile

I don't do calorie counting. I love soreen with some fine wafers of cheese and butter

A spoon of tahini from the jar - excellent calcium from the sesame seeds. Or a couple of Medjool dates or dried figs. Or if I'm really hungry a piece of toast.

Oh how I love a squidgy lunch box Soreen.
They are less than 100 calories so well worth my afternoon treat.

If you need to snack try to keep it as sugar free as possible. This is where Soreen has the edge over other 'go to snacks' like bars cakes and biscuits. Try teaming your Soreen with protein for added satiety; cottage cheese, peanut butter or pate works really well.

I've got much better at just having a few almonds, raisins, or blueberries, for example. But if I get a bit carried away and go for dips and crisps (naughty but nice) I would treat that as an early "light lunch" or supper....keeping the calorie intake in hand.

kathrob Wed 17-Jun-20 08:16:35

I would definitely eat fruit. Sometimes fruit loaf but I do not usually snack I leave treats as a dessert for after a meal.

shaddai88 Wed 17-Jun-20 08:40:01

I snack on nuts( almond, cashews, peanuts, hazel & Brazil nuts) and fresh fruits especially blueberries, kiwi, banana, carrots, clementines and celery. I try and avoid sweets.

StephC Wed 17-Jun-20 09:00:28

I don't keep biscuits, cakes etc in the house so I can't eat them! I also try to make sure I eat enough at mealtimes so that I don't snack, but if I do need something I have a piece of fruit, some seeds or some almonds!

I'm doing slimming world, so really helps me snack and snack on the right things. Lockdown have put on weight but expect by 3 weeks to be back at my target weight. I snack on fruit, eggs, pickles but allow myself a treat when I feel like it inc soreen

Murtle50 Wed 17-Jun-20 09:28:25

a perfect snack for me is a soreen banana mini loaf with a banana. gives me plenty of energy and leaves me feeling full .

Mich Wed 17-Jun-20 09:28:39

When I have a little break, I like a cuppa and a slice of Soreen, trouble is I like mine buttered (jam as well sometimes) - so that ups the calories! So if I am being really good, I just have a slice on it’s own! But if I’ve had the former, I take the dog for a much longer walk to burn off the extra calories!

woodlepage Wed 17-Jun-20 09:58:49

Soreen makes a great alternative to crackers, with cheese!

wilsonj Wed 17-Jun-20 10:09:05

I prep fruit in the morning so I have snacks when I need them. I enjoy eating cake and my self control can take quite a beating when I know I have cake. My favourite Soreen is the banana loaf. Whether it's individually wrapped or a large loaf I find it challenging to stop at one slice.

whitebeaches Wed 17-Jun-20 10:10:46

Soreen with peanut butter, simple and deelish!!
