With the stress and uncertainty around social isolation and lockdown, more of us than ever before have found ourselves comfort eating. Our latest research shows that 43% of us are snacking more than usual and 30% are struggling to eat a healthy diet. It’s all too easy to reach for a biscuit, and then another, then another. And suddenly the packet is gone. With that in mind, Soreen would like to hear your tips for healthy snacking, whether that’s ensuring guilt-free portion sizes or resisting the call of the biscuit tin.

Here’s what Soreen has to say: “Soreen, British baker of the Original Malt Loaf, has been enjoyed as a teatime treat in homes for over 80 years. Whilst many of us know that a slice of deliciously squidgy Soreen is perfect with a cuppa, it’s less well known that Soreen is a much healthier option than other sweet treats.

Our Malt Loaf contains over 40% less sugar and 80% less fat than the average cake. Plus if you’re looking for a tasty portion controlled snack, our individually wrapped Lunchbox Loaves are less than 100 calories each and our Sliced Loaf is just 65 calories per slice.

We know that for many of you the only way to eat Soreen is with butter! Well you’ll be pleased to hear that two buttered slices of malt loaf come in at just 150 calories and contain 40% less sugar and 50% less fat than the average slice of cake.

So you can still enjoy Soreen as a healthier swap without compromising on taste!”

Do you find portion controlled snacks help you control your snacking? How do you prevent the temptation of yet another biscuit? Do you find yourself wanting a snack when you know you’re definitely not hungry? How do you manage it?

Whatever your tips for healthy snacking, share them with Soreen in the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £100 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

If my sweet tooth urges are just too strong to resist I snack on some very dark chocolate. It's a strong sweet flavour that is so intense it's impossible to gorge on more than just a few squares !

I prefer to eat little and often so I always have a good supply of fresh fruit, mixed nuts and homemade oatcakes to hand.

A handful of nuts and raisins

My mother liked Soreen malt loaf so I grew up with it. It's good to know how low in calories Soreen is, even with a little butter. Soreen is my regular afternoon snack with a cup of Red bush tea. I like celery, always keep it in the fridge and snack on it during the evening.

I love a slice of ‘SOREEN’ and always take a slice in my lunch box at work.

It sounds crazy but it works! I eat half a slice of ham every hour on the hour. Low in calories and high in protein it keeps my cravings away until meal times.

I love soreen, but normally lather it with butter, but as an alternative I use a very low fat soft cheese spread, cuts the calories and fat and really tasty.

I think that with snacking, moderation is the key. Have something you fancy but a small portion rather than depriving yourself. Having lost 2 stone I would have a slice of soreen fruit loaf and a cup of tea and feel good about myself.

After collapsing about 17/18 years ago, I've never felt hungry since so don't snack. I've just about got a fancy for something in a couple of things, and one of those is chocolate eclairs with strawberries inside! I try to not have too many as my collapse caused issues with my weight too, but when you finally have some taste back, you've got to go with it and enjoy.

I’m eating loads of fruit and making smoothies with yoghurt. I am keeping my calorie count below 1500 per day.

I absolutely love Soreen, but only the original one I'm afraid. Not keen on the strawberry or apple ones. I love it with butter and often have it as a snack. I also have satsumas, apples and prunes throughout the day when I'm peckish and heading towards the chocolate biscuits!

A lovely slice of soreen with a drizzle of honey

Sarahlizzy90 Wed 17-Jun-20 23:06:39

I love convenience! I keep foods such as Soreen lunchbox loafs, cereal bars, sliced fruit and vegetables, yogurts, individually-wrapped cheese, whole grain crackers, and other healthy foods on hand to easily grab when the cravings come!

hopezibah Wed 17-Jun-20 23:24:45

We keep a box of "treats" and snacks - some healthy and some less so but it is an easy way of keeping track of snacking. Having individually wrapped snacks definitely helps.

I try not to snack in between meals if I feel a little hungry i find a nice lemon tea does the trick, I also make sure I drink plenty of water throughout the day.

When I feel like snacking I have a piece of fruiy or clean my teeth instead

It's the classic.. everything in moderation, but sadly it's the moderation I struggle with! Once I have gone a few days without sugar, I find it much easier to avoid it - when the cravings have past, I love a piece of fruit, a handful of almonds, or, as another poster suggested, celery sticks with peanut butter - filling & delicious!

I enjoy a handful of mixed nuts and raisins to keep me going.

Fairysue Thu 18-Jun-20 13:34:06

I like to snack on crackers with marmite and cucumber

Annapops Fri 19-Jun-20 08:21:13

I always snack on fruit but as a real treat will allow myself the occasional dunking of a rich tea biscuit in tea.

barbaramcgibben Sun 21-Jun-20 12:46:53

Both my children were keen rowers and soreen was always enjoyed to provide energy and a great taste.

Milliedog Sun 21-Jun-20 22:21:02

I only buy low calorie, healthy snacks so I'm not tempted by chocolate....
