Olympics Closing Ceremony

I heard Jacques Rogge use the address form 'Your Majesties' at both opening and closing ceremonies. I assumed that there were monarchs there from nations other than our own.

They all referred to 'Prince Henry'. Thought his actual name was Harry?

Nope, his actual name is Henry but it was decided from the start that he would be known as Harry.

Was there any traditional British music? If so, I missed it. I would have liked to see Gareth Malone too. Have to admit, I'm not a rock music fan. Loved the Eric Idle scene.

Was he Henry because he was on official royal duty? Don't care at all, tbh, what they call him or what titles they use.... IMO it's all nonsense to worry about it. Nobody was intentionally rude just a bit muddled at the end of an exhausting but thrilling few weeks!

I think the Majesty they referred to last night was the Queen of Spain who has been supporting althletes in many disciplines. She was at the opening ceremony too. The best part of referring to Prince Henry (as he is properly titled) was in French! Prince Henri de Pay de Galles!

If you listen again, you will hear that Harry was referred to as "Prince Henry (not i) de Galles", not du Pays de Galles as his Royal title is Prince Henry of Wales, and the Prince of Wales is also "Prince de Galles" not Prince du Pays de Galles

We can't blame all these ageing pop stars who probably jumped at the chance to polish their egos at one of the biggest UK events in many years, but I do blame those responsible for engaging them. Who on earth were they hoping to impress?
The athletes on the other hand were a sheer delight to watch; not just when they were competing, but afterwards when they were glowing with joy at having won a medal. After an event winners and losers had to run the gauntlet of being asked daft questions by sports interviewers but almost all did so with good grace and humour. So proud of them all - what wonderful role models for our children.

Instead of watching the Closing Ceremony, I am now reading about it. So much more interesting. I knew there would be nothing for me. Now after 8 pages GN about it I'm glad I went to bed early with a book. I think the Queen may have done the same.
I'm glad the Olympics is over and hope that it will bring some prosperity to Britain after all that money spent.

I was a bit grumpy about it last night, on another thread but think I was sad it's all over, I feel strangely bereft today, but I've noticed people are still jolly and happy . We need to keep that going somehow.

Interesting that there does seem to have been something for everyone last night. Embarrassed as I was watching The Who I was amazed that Kate Moss was there [it was actually her, wasn't it?], and I loved Ray Davies [he never could sing but is probably one of our best songwriters from that era; the only group to have been banned from America, were The Kinks; thought of as far too subversive]. I didn't realise that some people were able to watch it on their telly in 3D. And I've realised that I Am the Walrus is probably my favourite ever Beatles song. Everyone I've spoken today have been--kna--very tired; don't know how I [or they] got through work this morning....

Re the ageing rock stars and their never ending egos, David Bowie has gone right up in my estimation, because apparently he turned down the request to appear live with "I've retired". (Source: Twitter). I like it when the material is given to the younger generation to perform e.g. Ed Sheeran singing Pinball Wizard ... that's the way to do it when your voice IS GONE! [thumbs up emoticon].

Yes the franglais made me smile too - we have an awful lot of people round here who speak french like that.

I loved the ceremony - even the Spice Girls but I was annoyed that Hazel Irvine and colleague talked over the two Elbow songs. Every time they spoke, the sound was faded and the lyrics of the Elbow songs were the ones MOST relevant to this unique sporting occasion. Ok ok I'm biased but my choir's musical director said the same thing tonight..and she's no slouch.

Hello, I'm new on here. I've had a quick read of this thread and would like to say I thought the Olympics were amazing. The opening and closing ceremonies were fantastic and the athletes made me very proud to be British. I do think it's nice to get back to normal though. It felt a little like force feeding towards the end.
