Amazing Olympics

We seem to have a few moans about the Olympics on various threads, plus our own gransnet games which I am enjoying. Could this be a positive thread about Rio? We don't have one so far.

I can not be on my own enjoying the diving and particularly the amazing gymnasts. Cycling is a bit tedious but can't wait for the athletics.

A wonderful day! (I'm rooting for team GB and also for South Africa) - very happy with Justin Rose (born in Johannesburg) and of course Andy grin

But the biggest thrill for me came from Wayde van Niekerk, who broke the world record and got SA its first gold. This Tweet says it all:

Then Bolt halts interview, runs up the ramp to embrace and congratulate Wayde on his WR and Olympic Gold. That's how it is done. #Rio2016

And BTW Van Niekerk's coach is a 74 year old great-grandmother. grin

I couldn't help but feel a bit sad about Michael Johnson's record being broken though.

Perhaps Van Niekerk's coach could train us all for the next Gransnet Olympics in 2020? grin.

Any one watching the dancing horses? T'is lovely.
Charlotte DuJardin should be on at 16.40. Carl Hester for Team GB is currently in the lead!

LullyDully Mon 15-Aug-16 16:11:47

I think we should give Michael Johnson British citizen ship. He talks so much sense...not that that is a criteria.

Although I stated my intention (see above 1.19am) to stay up for the 100m, I noticed it was scheduled for 2.30am, so regretfully went to bed where I went to sleep immediately. Now feeling somewhat dopey. I like the dancing horses too, but do the riders really have to wear those ridiculous outfits?

Tegan Mon 15-Aug-16 16:53:30

they look wonderful; and it looks as if Valegro has done it..two more to go. I'm in bits....

whitewave Mon 15-Aug-16 17:00:11

Only just got in from a funeral, so missed the dressage - bum. It always leaves me in tears and done enough of that today!

merlotgran Mon 15-Aug-16 17:02:48

Fingers crossed! Fingers crossed!!

whitewave Mon 15-Aug-16 17:23:42

What was Valegro like?

Tegan Mon 15-Aug-16 17:29:24

My understanding of dressage is so pathetic that they all look pretty much the same but judging by the commentators he was faultless. I was too busy crying to watch it properly. Now scared to see the last few compete#stillcrying blush

merlotgran Mon 15-Aug-16 17:30:17

GOLD!!!

Valegro was perfect!

TriciaF Mon 15-Aug-16 18:14:18

Tegan - I watched it and was crying too! Those horses are so beautiful and graceful - they should have the medals, not the riders.

whitewave Mon 15-Aug-16 18:30:29

Hopefully he will have a very long and happy retirement

Delighted to read elsewhere that Andy Murray stood up for women tennis gold medalists in an interview with the ineffable Inverdale. Very exciting match with del Potro, but why did I keep thinking of Del Trotter?

GandTea Mon 15-Aug-16 19:36:17

Another night of budgie smugglers in the diving.

Jalima Mon 15-Aug-16 19:49:26

grumppa grin
Fortunately he doesn't look a bit like del Trotta!!

I have thoroughly enjoyed most sports, eeven the cycling at the velodrome although some of the events I do not have a clue about- the Omnium (if that is the correct word|) being one.

I do enjoy the athletics but feel very strongly that Justin Gatlin USA who was banned x2 for drug cheating should not have been allowed to take part. He is not the only drugs cheat, others have been allowed to run. Once found to be a cheat they should be disqualified for life. There endeth the sermon.

Jalima Mon 15-Aug-16 20:20:11

I don't understand how the cycling works either!

I have only stayed up once, to watch Andy last night.

whitewave Mon 15-Aug-16 20:34:17

A British swimming coach said that we would have at least 4 more medals if swimmers had been banned for life for drug abuse. I agree, if you are found to be cheating then your are out for good. That would stop it all.

JessM Mon 15-Aug-16 20:46:14

The horse dancing may be a cute trick, but is it a sport?

whitewave Mon 15-Aug-16 20:52:55

Don't care really!smile They are glorious animals and sooooo clever. Actually yes I think it is a sport. Just the same as jumping, racing etc.

LullyDully Mon 15-Aug-16 20:55:08

The only way to stop it is to be unforgiving. The trouble is the drugs get harder to detect.

Apparently we have John Major to thank for our success, by setting up the lottery. Before then we couldn't afford to train Olympians properly. So it says on the news....interesting.

I hope something can be done to finance the paralympians' flights. Surely the richer countries could club together. Something must be done.

Badenkate Mon 15-Aug-16 23:18:54

I was so glad Mark Cavendish got his Olympic medal at last. And the girl who won the bronze in the hammer throwing was great. In fact, they're all great. I have a big smile on my face smile

I'm on catchup, so just saw the great David Rudisha in the 800m.

We don't have many track athletes, do we? Where's Christine Ohurugu? Did she not qualify?
