OMG just imagine opening against Djokovic on Centre Court at the age of 19. I suppose somebody has to play him.
Nothing to lose, but I hope Jack Draper is out there for a reasonable length of time!
Emotional introduction to this opening match - felt quite teary!

Really missed Rafa this year but I'm warming to Berrettini. Novak D is very robotic and I think that's why people don't like him.

Is Djokovic the most disliked Wimbledon champion ever: or is it just me?

Smileless2012 Fri 09-Jul-21 19:35:15

Me too MayBee I know he's a brilliant player but I just don't like him.

Blooming Djokovic again.....sigh.

He was quite gracious in his victory speech.
Why don't people like him generally?

I wasn't keen and wanted Shapovalov to win but went off him rather when he had a long bathroom break and then a tantrum and shouted at the umpire.

He’s a great player, but was rooting for Shapovalov to win. Time for a change.

I don’t like his anti vaccine stance. Also he was responsible for some players being infected last year: can’t remember the circumstances ( need to look it up). And I remember him playing Andy Murray once and he was guilty of a lot of gamesmanship. I never liked him after that. It was a long time ago but I’ve never forgotten it. He’s being nice now because he realises it’s good to get the crowd behind you, but I don’t trust him.

I didn't realise, have only taken notice of him as a tennis player and thought he was very graceless and yes, guilty of gamesmanship but had impr8ved lately.

Of course, Murray too lacked charm but has improved a lot in that area!

Lucca I think we've realised grin

Right - so who are our favourites?

Barty and Berritini

I was rooting for Shapovalov and he gave Djokovic a good run for his money. I was really disappointed he wasn't able to finish it off but he will be one to watch next year.

I don't like Djokovic. I find his aggression horrible at the end of the match and actually quite intimidating. I just don't like him or some of his opinions.

Murray was always a bit gruff and sour. I loved his tennis but he had no people skills ..... but then I really warmed to him when he cried that time.

Lucca Sat 10-Jul-21 07:58:07

Callistemon…sorry !!

Anniebach Sat 10-Jul-21 08:10:24

I am not bothered about a player lacking people skills, Lendl
was never popular because he lacked ‘people skills’

I agree with your analysis sparklefizz and that of others. I love how Rafa brings all his family with him when he is on tour, such a family man and a supreme sportsman without all the negative aspects that ND has.

Let’s hope Berrettini can turn things around tomorrow. Hasn’t he got lovely eyes ?

Talking of tomorrow it’s tennis in the afternoon and footie in the evening! My mum used to say ‘I’m turning off the tv to let it cool down a bit’.

Sparklefizz Sat 10-Jul-21 08:29:21

Haha NanKate, Love your Mum's comment! It's going to be an exciting weekend.

NanKate I can highly recommend Andy Murray's documentary "Resurfaced" on Netflix if you haven't already seen it. I loved him before, but even more after watching him in that ... such dedication and hard work, and also a family man.

Sparklefizz Sat 10-Jul-21 08:32:07

PS. I am also a great Gareth Southgate fan!!!

Callistemon Sat 10-Jul-21 14:03:12

Here we go!
??

Callistemon Sat 10-Jul-21 14:08:10

Please - if anyone is there can they serve a tennis ball into McEnroe's mouth?
Please?
Anyone?

Millie22 Sat 10-Jul-21 14:46:40

Andy was a big lad who took a long time to grow into his frame: over the years we’ve watched him grow physically, mentally and emotionally and that’s why many of us have warmed to him. I feel his pain playing games that he knows he should win technically but his body lets him down. Sportspeople have to be ready to retire when they have to through injury and, sadly, he isn’t emotionally there yet. I think we’ve all warmed to his mum over the years, too.

Callistemon Sat 10-Jul-21 16:10:26

Yes!!
Well done, Ashleigh Barty ??

Grandmadinosaur Sat 10-Jul-21 16:13:23

Well done Ashleigh Barty a really enjoyable final. Anyone else getting emotional ?
