Norwegian women's team and beach games rules at the Tokyo Olympics

Women playing beach games (volleyball, handball) have to follow rules by which they have to wear very revealing pants and this has often been a cause of titillation for male spectators. It detracts from the actual sport for which the girls have trained hard.

Now the Norwegian team have chosen to wear shorts and found support from many sportswomen and celebrities. Pink, the singer, has offered to pay the fine for them. I have always admired Pink. The gesture is symbolic really, as the fine is only €1500 but I think it is great that someone has finally stood up to this silliness.

One thing I commented on was the male divers minuscule trunks, watching Tom Dayley at the last olympics was embarrassing! Haven’t watched any olympics this time.

I’m sure that in the last Olympics Muslim women were allowed to wear less revealing clothes. Surely if athletes don’t feel comfortable revealing so much of their bodies they should be allowed to wear whatever they prefer - provided the team colours and designs are the same.

No barely-pubescent gymnast (or any other for that matter) should have to wear an outfit that requires fanny-waxing. I find some of their outfits horrendous - a paedo's wet dream.

Good on the Norwegian hand-ball team. It must feel better to wear something where you are actually comfortable. Plus aren't they on sand? Sand gets 'everywhere'!

Good on Pink. being fined for not wearing skimpy outfits is ridiculous

as ridiculous as being told to cover up!

I take issue with the OP on the titillation point which appears to be condescending towards ALL men whilst failing to include ANY women whatsoever and therefore must be considered to be completely inaccurate and tabloidesque.

The silliest costumes are for the artistic (synchronised) swimming.

Some people were having a go at the volleyball, players because of the skimpy bottoms but they don’t t have a choice if they don’t want a fine, it’s absolutely disgusting that that outfit is in the rules , same as the stupid costumes and ridiculous make up they expect the ( sometimes very young)gymnasts to wear, imagine the outcry if the men were forced to wear such outfits, rules obviously written by a bunch of male perverts

I do wonder why Tom Daley bothers with swimming trunks - and indeed how they stay up!

olliebeak Fri 30-Jul-21 11:51:00

Besides everything else connected the 'outfits' worn for Beach Volleyball etc, what about sand getting into places where it shouldn't get to ............. OUCH!

Millie22 Fri 30-Jul-21 12:24:37

I don't think periods will be happening as they'll all be on the pill so they can delay it until the end of the competition. All that moving about would be a nightmare if you actually had to wear something. The girls in the gymnastics look so dressed up with make up and glitz.

Apparently their choice includes various outfits and the only rule is that they all wear the same. They have a massive choice which includes ankle length leggings. The bikinis cause less chafing from sand apparently. Sand getting into the clothing causes problems so players are saying. So I really do not understand what this thread is about. There is not a rule...from what I have read...that says they have to wear bikinis.

I got a bit mad about it and had "one of Mum's moments". I emailed the European Handball Federation and told them what I thought of them.

Theoddbird - the women's handball team were fined by the European Handball Federation and they do obviously have rules about the uniform otherwise the fine would not be possible. The “bottoms” of the women's outfits were limited to a maximum (I think) of only 8 or 9 cm at the hip which is why they could not wear shorts like the men. The EHF plan to “discuss” the matter later this year.

The men's team wear quite baggy “boxer” type shorts so it has nothing to do with egress of sand. It's pure sexism or misogyny since the women's outfits were not even practical for the amount of movement required in that sport.

Simply ridiculous! My DG does dance at 6and they wear dreadfully tiny leotards and no ballet tights like we had! Why? Nobody appears to know..... Warm legs perform better in practice

There is no reason for female athletics to be "on their period" when they are competing - its now acknowledged it is perfectly okay for women to take their pills every day instead of taking a week off out of every four for the so-called "withdrawal bleed". I used to do that anyway if I was due to go on holiday or anything else where I would not want to be bleeding. The dress codes for some female sports are disgusting - kudos to the Norwegians for taking a stand against this. Athletes should (within reason) be allowed to wear what they are comfortable with.

Saetana, not every woman can, or wants to, take oral contraceptives.

Good on the athletes for standing up for this.

It’s part of the pageantry of the sport. It helps tell the story.

Volleyball players have a choice. Women have 5 choices.
Men have 0
