A platform for news, views and comments this Wimbledon fortnight.

Andy - how far will he get?
Who will be the most annoying presenter(s)?
Any Brits to look out for?
Anyone here going?

And not forgetting Lucca, who loved the game and the Championship🌻.

Kim19 Mon 01-Jul-24 14:42:39

Ixion, I'm currently enjoying this game too. Lots of athleticism and pure hitting. Great start to the fortnight. I had a ticket for centre court for the 4th but had to give it away due to unforeseen circumstances.

Eh???? Who's Lucca?

A much respected and loved former member, sadly no longer with us
RIP Lucca

Oh how sad. I hadn’t realised.

I always check when wimbledon is on as the finals are always the best time to go and pick strawberries . You get the field to yourself more or less, usually a lovely day weather wise and get plenty of good fruit and go home and make jam immediately. What bliss and on a miserable november day out comes the jam to remind you of the lovely day when you made it!! I loved Roger Federer, would have thrown McEnroe out for his childish and appalling behaviour as a player, giving such an dreadful example to all children and tennis learners and would not have given him a minute as a commentator!! With the state of tv now you can easily watch repeats of games. Of course this may infuriate people who love watching it, but I will be stuck by the tv for any sailing , rugby or eventing or showjumping or dressage. Good job we are all different isnt it?

Streaky Mon 01-Jul-24 15:00:38

I have still to buy strawberries but I have bought a six-pack of cans of Pimms so that should do me for the next two weeks.
Currently watching Stan the man and then looking forward to Janik Sinner later today.
I have never enjoyed watching Andy Murray, and being a fellow Scot, I have always felt a bit guilty about that.
No luck in the ticket draw again this year, and not really up to the ā€˜queue’ so will enjoy from the comfort of my armchair.
Any favourite umpires, I like Mohamed who announces the scores in a very theatrical manner, and of course Kader Nouni, he of the deep deep voice!
Happy viewing šŸ“šŸ„‚šŸŽ¾

Why do people come onto here to say they don't like the tennis. Just why šŸ¤”

Lajal has interesting hair. He is giving Alcaraz a few problems as he is playing quite well.

Well, the secretary bird is giving Alcaraz a run for his moneyšŸ˜†

grin that really is some hairdo

Pammie1 Mon 01-Jul-24 15:13:41

Just watching centre court - Alcarez v Lajal. Can anyone enlighten me as to what’s going on with Mark Lajal’s hair ?!! It looks like a haystack !! It looks like he has cornrows tied up but I could be wrong.

keepingquiet Mon 01-Jul-24 15:19:44

I love his hair!

ixion Mon 01-Jul-24 15:24:09

Can you imagine Dan Maskell's response?

Oh, I say! and calling him this young man?

Such a gent, he was.āļø

I love his hair!

I’m finding it quite mesmerising every time he’s in close up !!

Sparklefizz Mon 01-Jul-24 15:28:35

Terrific match. Alcaraz having to work hard.

Lajal’s hair is dreadlocks apparently.

ixion Mon 01-Jul-24 15:37:51

Lots of slebs.

Dame Floella Benjamin
David Beckham
Sir David Attenborough
Sir Cliff - please don't let it rain😱

Any more?

Trudy1925 Mon 01-Jul-24 15:43:06

Enjoying Alcaraz and Lajal this afternoon.
We’re going on Sunday, cannot wait.
I miss Dan Maskell and always enjoy hearing his commentating at the start of the bbc intro. ā€˜That’s a peach of a shot!’ is my favourite šŸŽ¾

LauraNorderr Mon 01-Jul-24 16:14:05

Great match. Alcatraz a worthy winner. Now all eyes on Emma, fingers and toes crossed, ours not hers of course.

nanaK54 Mon 01-Jul-24 16:23:19

Definitely everything crossed here for Emma!

LauraNorderr Mon 01-Jul-24 16:24:23

I did write Alcaraz honestly. Flipping predictive text. Should have read before posting., oh heck

J52 Mon 01-Jul-24 16:29:48

Good game between Alcaraz and Lajal. I’m glad Alcaraz won, but looking forward to seeing more. Lajal’s playing.
I also think it’s time for Andy Murray to bow out.
But enough, back to watching - come on Emma!

Much missed.

I remember Lucca but did not realise she was no longer with us. I am sorry to hear that. I know she used to play tennis herself.

NemoNanna Mon 01-Jul-24 16:56:28

I’m going on Wednesday, Court 1, I won’t know who we’ll see until the night before but hope to see some good tennis and soak up the atmosphere. I miss Roger Federer, lucky enough to see him play a few times, brilliant player.

Gingster Mon 01-Jul-24 16:56:48

I love Wimbledon -
Andy should retire gracefully, can’t stand him really. His voice and his moaning, however I try , as he’s a Brit.

I like Alcatraz and think he seems quite gentlemanly.
Raducanu is a lovely player but I can’t relax with her.

Funnily enough I like Andrew Castle but find Annabelle Croft annoying with her relentless gabble. She doesn’t draw breath.

Gingster Mon 01-Jul-24 16:57:45

Alcaraz 😔 not Alcatraz!

JenniferEccles Mon 01-Jul-24 17:24:06

I am looking forward to seeing how far Jack Draper can progress now he’s our number one player.

I can’t seem to warm to Emma Raducanu though. I think she’s more interested in the sponsorship side of things rather than putting in the hard graft necessary. I hope I’m wrong though.

I always enjoy Wimbledon fortnight and I have for years, going right back to when I had to drag myself away from the tv to collect my children from school.
Actually though, earlier than that as my mum was a huge fan when I was a child and my interest grew once I had the rules and scoring explained to me!

MayBee70 Mon 01-Jul-24 17:27:28

My feelings towards Andy Murray changed when he fought so hard to win his Olympic gold medals.I think in his early career it took a long time for him to grow into his body; maybe that’s why he has struggled with injury. A sportsperson has to be ready to retire from the sport they love; they find it very difficult mentally if they aren’t and Andy just loves playing. I really feel for him.

Sparklefizz Mon 01-Jul-24 17:43:45

I know what you mean, JE. I think the same.

Crossstitchfan Mon 01-Jul-24 18:19:01

Isn’t it funny how Andy Murray always develops some sort of injury/problem before EVERY Wimbledon? Is this so he can blame it when he loses?
Sorry, you probably have gathered that I don’t hold him in much regard. I don’t know who I dislike most, him or his mother!
