Love Jake Jarman! Did anyone see the footage of him as a young child when his mum took him to a gym and the instructor couldn’t believe what he could already do!

Watching the athletics tonight, I have to say the Stade de France is an amazing venue, so very French with all the colour coridination.

Isn’t it? And I love the idea of the winners’ bell, that’s going to be placed in Notre Dame after the games.

Not sure if anyone is interested but here's some film from the 1908 Olympics

The gymnasts are amazing. All of them but watching tiny Simone Biles launch herself without a springboard to do triple twists and seemingly float the air whilst rotating is incredible.

Their bravery is unbelievable.

πŸ₯‡Keely Hodgkinson!
Brilliant win for GB
Well done that girl!πŸ₯‡

Joseann Mon 05-Aug-24 21:04:35

Amazing how someone so young handles so much pressure!

grumppa Mon 05-Aug-24 21:14:55

The build-up on the BBC was so OTT that I began to hope Keely Hodgkinson wouldn't win gold, just to spite the presenters and commentators. But wow! She really is that good!

ixion Mon 05-Aug-24 21:26:20

Stunning scenes in the men's Pole Vault!

Joseann Mon 05-Aug-24 21:32:44

Yes, such camaraderie too!

RosiesMaw2 Mon 05-Aug-24 21:39:17

I am enormously proud of our athletes- medal winners or not (but especially that we did it!)

The good thing is, I'm improving my geography of Paris as we watch. I always thought Paris was quite a small area, but we seem to be covering a lot of ground, literally.

westendgirl Mon 05-Aug-24 21:48:48

Does anyone else get irritated when there's loud cheering and we are having to watch a rerun of the race we've just seen?
There sometimes seems to be far too much chat and I feel that we're missing out other events. It seems worse in the athletics.Tonight for example there were two equally important events , the pole vault and the women's discus, but we only saw snippets.I was please Keeley Hodgkinson won, but there was too much build up.

westendgirl Mon 05-Aug-24 21:51:25

Well done,
Primrose's relative. I saw that event and he was excellent .

The pub quiz we were at was halted to watch Keely πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Did anyone watch the Cross Kayaking yesterday? It was hilarious - like a mix of It's a Knockout and Gladiators. Brilliant.

And the Women's Gymnastics - astonishing!

Grandmabatty Tue 06-Aug-24 06:51:40

I watched the kayaking while I had my grandsons so couldn't pay full attention. It didn't strike me as an awfully olympic sport, but I certainly couldn't do it!

Sparklefizz Tue 06-Aug-24 08:16:55

I agree Grandmabatty

Gymnastic competition floors are very well sprung. On vault, of course they use a sprung springboard, Not in any way putting down the tumbling skills of todays gymnasts (both men and women). These are Artistic Gymnasts, a lot of people in the sport would like to sell less emphasis on the tumbling and more on grace and dance.

There is (not in the Olympics), but in international gymnastics a separate tumbling competition, in which the gymnasts use a long, straight run on a tumble track. These 'tumblers' do triple somi's combined with twisting, etc. They are totally amazing.
Rebeca Andrade's floor exercise is an excellent example of combining tumbles with dance, etc. So pleased she took that final Gold Medal.
Whereas, the GB Women worked really hard and well, we have at least two of our best gymnasts not at Paris as they are recovering from injury - they are young and should be part of the GB team in four years time.

Thanks so much. He started with a homemade horse in his back garden when he was much younger. All the family are over the moon. ☘️☘️
