I am shocked and horrified at the abuse being hurled at the Europeans by the American spectators at the Ryder Cup. It really shows up the childish behaviour probably instigated by Trumps presence.
Is this how to make America great again?

Wow, I was horrified to see it on the news. I always thought golf was a game distinguished by etiquette and respect for the course and the other players.

Assuming the fans, since they are paying good money to access tickets, are golfers themselves, the game has indeed gone downhill in America. If golfers are acting this way, then what about the general public (the plebs)?

I think most nations will have a minority who let their country down, they aren't representative of the country as a whole. My memories of Americans are that they are generally courteous. Sport unfortunately can bring out the worst in some.

Why are the Stewards not intervening , or as a last resort, stopping play?
Just what happened to Tennis, led by John McEnroe.
Ah, money involved.

Dead right they should have removed for their appalling behaviour. Or how about deducting points or abandoning the match?

And good on Rory McIroy for his stance.

I do hope that your John McEnroe reference will not come true and golf will go to he same way.But l fear it will.

Spectators, nowadays really think they are the on par with the players in being part of the action. In a kind of parasitic way.

Very sad, but I'm so glad Europe .won

To quote from a good old American saying.

They were "awesome"

There was a good deal of bad behaviour at the Open at Portrush this year, but not from spectators - from the players. There’s a heck of a lot of money involved and feelings run high. You never saw that in the past. GS and SiL were there and said the crowds and the atmosphere were fantastic, but there was a lot of frustration boiling over on the course.

Please don't think ALL Americans think this is ok.

The Magats and their leader feel being polite and courteous is a restriction of freedom.

Sport used to be so "gentlemanly" and enjoyable. It's all gone the same way - tennis, cricket, football, golf, darts and even snooker. The players themselves encourage the crowds by punching the air, shouting and cheering themselves.
Sport has lost its allure for me I'm afraid.

Not far from me are football pitches used by children's football teams. The fathers take it way too seriously and start shouting at the players, who are sometimes only 9 or 10 years old. One of my friends said his son was playing a team known for being rough and one of the fathers came on the pitch and started hurling abuse at the players and the referee. For goodness sake, it's only children playing a game they want to enjoy and not be bullied and sworn at by adults.
Like you, I can't stand most modern sports that only seem to exist to make money for broadcasters and players who want more money every year. Also a lot of football fans strike me as sad as they can't see they're being used.
