Is anyone watching the Winter Olympics?

This is probably the only 2 weeks where I avidly watch curling! I'm looking forward to watching our skating duo who have a good chance of a medal with their British pop music inspired routines. They have so much ability and personality so good luck to them.

That poor girls 'fault' looked a tiny tiny thing to me!
Is curling not just bowls on ice? We had to play it at school and it was sooooo boring to do.

MartavTaurus Thu 12-Feb-26 08:44:02

There must be a strategy to curling somewhere, but I don't get it either.

Poor Lila !
I must have blinked when she created a fault.
All that training .
All that hard work .
All our expectations and hopes.
She must feel utterly sick and devastated today .

Take heart Lila -you were lovely and a joy to watch .

I don't know what the training involves, but I think that a ballet class would contribute to the grace of the dance .
To me - some of top medallists look as though they've done a ballet barre or two .

MartavTaurus Thu 12-Feb-26 09:03:21

Yes, Esmay, maybe that's why I'm being somewhat ultra critical, as I am ballet trained to a fairly high level. It's the technical finish that is so important to get those top marks.
Lila and partner were brilliantly creative, but I think not what the judges were looking for, and the noticeable slip sealed their fate.

I thought the winning French pair were sublime.

Fallingstar Thu 12-Feb-26 12:09:32

The French were so effortless, usually I hold my breath wondering if anything will go wrong but this pair allowed me to relax and enjoy it.
Am afraid our pair were just not up to par.

A video explaining curling.

I don’t understand that luge thing where they race along on a tin tray lying prone. The winners are only separated by tenths of a second. It’s difficult to see how they can get much faster.

It's terrifying just watching!

I agree, and with ixion. Such elegance and skill, full of emotion too.

Unusual choice of music, unknown to me, but it worked because the fluidity of the movement became all the more important.

I'm pleased the Ukranian competitor has been banned from competing because of his helmet. The International Olympic Committee told Vladylsav Heraskevych that his "helmet of remembrance" violated its rules prohibiting political statements.

The irony is that by being banned, he has probably got far more publicity than if he had competed in the event. So I'm pleased about that too!

Aveline Thu 12-Feb-26 15:35:04

I'm sorry he wasn't allowed to go ahead with it but it has led to lots of publicity which is the main point I suppose. Tragic that this Russian, inexcusable, aggression has been the root of it.

vegansrock Thu 12-Feb-26 16:31:22

Most of the events are terrifying and/ or bonkers!

I agree, I felt so sad for her and their routine after the mistake was just magical! There will be another time for them.

I didn’t think I’d be watching any of it but have found myself thoroughly enjoying the skating, some of the skiing and the luge which looks absolutely petrifying to me!

I’m with Allira as regards curling, I just don’t get it at all.

It’s advanced sweeping 😂

Bellasnana Thu 12-Feb-26 16:55:57

I’m exhausted watching the skiathlon from the comfort of my sofa…

Esmay Thu 12-Feb-26 19:17:53

When exhausted watching the Winter Olympics I recommend a cup of tea and some McVitie chocolate digestives .
I felt quite overcome watching the cross-country event .

Grandmabatty Thu 12-Feb-26 19:19:33

So I could curl then because I often sweep the room with a glance

Oh - Cooper Woods got a gold medal for Australia in the men’s’ moguls. I had tears in me eyes I did. Pretty rare for Australia to win anything like that!

Quite agree, and the commentaries on the half pipe events are a different language - “chuckle busters’, ‘pop tarts’, ‘McTwist chicken wing’ and ‘stale fish’ to name but a few! I have no idea what they are talking about but exhilarating to watch.

Grantanow Fri 13-Feb-26 13:47:34

Curling on the radio reminds me of Grandad listening to cricket on the wireless.

Love the figure skating but getting really annoyed with the BBC as they keep changing the timings of the live broadcasts . It’s been really difficult chasing it across BBC1 and 2 and the red button all week. Once it was supposed to be on at nine but it started early so we missed half .

There are ski resorts in Australia!
Not surprisingly, one is called Perisher.

I can't post photos for some reason.
