Calling all sausage shapes

I am not terrifically huge a size 18 but my shape reminds me of a plump sausage.

Full bust then more or less straight e.g. sausage down from there without much of a hint of a waist.

Legs are not very big so hips bulge out in comparison with top of legs.

Hope I have painted the picture well.

My problem therefore (among many) is trousers. I have to buy ones big enough to go round the invisible waist then the legs are usually huge and baggy.

I would like to find somewhere that caters for people like myself. Elasticated waists I don't like.

Occasionally I am lucky and get a pair to fit reasonably well but instead of going back and buying a couple more I forget or leave it too long and they are then out of stock.

Trousers with rollover tops are nice - google yoga pants. Lands End do a posh version.

You can get really nice roll-top denim jeans from maternity wear manufacturers - seriously - I wear them all the time and no-one is any the wiser!

And Monsoon have lively roll-top linen trousers - I hhave 2 pairts in different colours - very comfortable and attractive.

Sorry - I meant lovely!!

JessM Tue 26-Mar-13 17:58:38

Lively trousers. Now there's a thought.

...a ferret up the trouser leg might result in a lively outburst. shock blush

Off to feed the pussy cats. Thanks for another lovely day. moon

I could do with some lively trousers! Sounds like it might save a lot of effort.

overthehill my body shape is very different! No bosoms, (love my gel bra, trouble is I take it off and my tits go with it) smallish waist, then thunder thighs and a large bottom. Reasonable calves and ankles.

In fact, the more I think of it, the section of my body from just below the waist to the knees is not mine ! it doesn't fit with any of the rest, so has obviously been taken over by some sort of alien life force. I look a bit like those children's games where you flip the pages to create unlikely animals.

Going back to your OP, yes, I do find it hard when buying trousers.

PS Plus I'm 5' 2"

oh you'r a dwt phoenix as we say in Wales.
Actually overthehill having a little look in the maternity sections might not be a bad idea. yoga/maternity waistbands have a smooth effect as long as you don't want to tuck a blouse in.

Thank you all, never thought of maternity wear and never heard of rollover top trousers but will look it up now.

JessM

Tucking in anything just never happens now, I like tops to cover the bottom.

I too prefer long tops when possible.

Have just received some clothes I ordered, including a pair of black control trousers, ready for next week.

I ordered a size larger than I used to be, and as they are just a pull on style I thought there would be no problem.

Well, standing on one leg and jiggling around to get the other leg in, I found I was really struggling to get them on. Cue very upset face, thinking I now need TWO sizes larger. It was then that I discovered that they come with a sort of inbuilt control knickers type thing that reach about halfway down the thigh, and I had somehow managed to get them all out of kilter! blush

janeainsworth Wed 27-Mar-13 14:17:31

Phoenix what is it with you and knickers grin
Good luck next week! All will be well!

Tegan Wed 27-Mar-13 14:17:50

phoenix; I think I'm two people stuck together as well. I'm quite petite but have the biggest legs of anyone I know [have to buy extra large tights etc]. Found the way to trim my legs was by jogging but, soon as I discovered that the knees went and the jogging went with them sad.

Anne58 Wed 27-Mar-13 15:53:35

jane I do seem to have more than my share of knicker related incidents blush Thanks for the good wishes!

Tegan it's horrible to feel like two mismatched halves in one body, isn't it? I remember feeling a sense of relief a few years ago when I first heard that manufacturers had realised that not all women are a standard shape, and had started selling bikini tops and bottoms separately.

Then I recalled that the reason I had stopped going swimming was my large, wobbly cellulite ridden thighs, which no amount of swimwear would cover. sad

Unless of course someone went a step further and brought back Edwardian style costumes......................

Lilygran Wed 27-Mar-13 16:05:22

I think I remember photographs of Nigella Lawson on the beach in something called a 'burkini' which covered everything except her head and feet. Not suggesting, just commenting.

Tegan Wed 27-Mar-13 16:24:56

I'm not even pear shaped because that implies that I go out but eventually go back in again...I just keep going outwards...confused...

Elegran Wed 27-Mar-13 16:50:08

Like a pyramid,Tegan ?

numberplease Wed 27-Mar-13 16:51:35

Tegan, I never noticed that you had "big" legs! If you think that yours are the biggest, you`ve obviously not noticed my tree trunks! I once tried to buy myself some fancy coloured/patterned wellies, but my legs wouldn`t fit into them sad

annodomini Wed 27-Mar-13 16:59:29

I'm a 'apple' at the moment. I once was an hourglass - ah, those were the days... I would like to regain my waistline. [wistful emoticon]

Tegan Wed 27-Mar-13 19:22:17

I once showed my legs at a slimming club that I used to go to. They couldn't understand why I went there [most of them weighed far more than I did]. When they saw how huge my legs were they all fell silent and 'got it'. I'd kept losing weight but the imbalance just got worse. I then went to a beauty place for some treatment and the girl there pointed out that I actually needed to put some weight on. That was when I realised that the right exercise combined with a sensible diet would help [and drinking lots of water]. I wish I could turn the clock back and do all the right things. It isn't just my thighs that are big; my calves are really wide, too [I can't wear a lot of boots although the fashion for wider boots has helped].

hochiwich Thu 28-Mar-13 07:11:05

I am also only 5'2 and used to be slim and reasonably proportioned in my youth, though I never had what you'd call a waistline. Narrow sloping shoulders, big rib cage and narrow hips meant that I wasn't exactly curvy. Since being unable to do the exercise I was accustomed to I have gained weight, mostly around the middle, and now I think I would describe myself as almost egg shaped. I gave up on knickers years ago, they either slithered down below my bottom or rode up the crack and neither is comfortable. Haven't worn tights for many years either. I've mostly given up on normal trousers, even elasticated waist ones, they made my short legs look like those of an elephant. I do have some narrower velvety ones for best (JD Williams ones). Mostly I manage with maternity leggings or those baggy harem pants with elasticated ankles. Naturally they aren't what you'd expect at my age but I don't care. I just want to be comfortable and keep my pants hovering somewhere around my non existent waist. And anyway my grandchildren think I'm "cool".

hochiwich Thu 28-Mar-13 07:15:16

I Just thought, overthehill, with your sausage and my egg we should go well together!

overthehill Thu 28-Mar-13 09:40:40

Hochiwich

Yes a great pair.

Wow do you go commando?

JammieB Thu 28-Mar-13 16:12:23

Well ......... certainly reassuring that I'm not alone!! I have been buying maternity jeans for a long time - I have slim thighs - flat bum and NO waist whatsoever - shaped a bit like a ladybird!! However age does have it's compensations - realised there is s*d all I can do about it!! Preggy jeans and a long floaty top disguises a multitude of bodily horrors!!

GrandmaRuth Thu 28-Mar-13 17:32:14

Phoenix, re your comment posted at 18.38 on 26th March - you are not alone! I had tears (of laughter) rolling down my face as I read your post to my husband. We loved it.
