Likes and dislikes in clothing

My gripes for clothing is as follows:

Tie strings in tops, why? we are not little girls who like a bow round their back. If I really like the top I have to open the side seams, remove ties and machine back up....what a faff.

Cap sleeves, definitely a no no.

Crop tops, likewise

Low cut that allows vast expanse of cleavage

What I like and surprisingly difficult to come by:

3/4" length sleeves
Tops that cover the bottom
Jersey material with give
Style that skims the bumpy bits

I definitely don't do frilly or girlie. I do like linen in the summer, both trousers and skirts. I have no neck so wear low cut tops and I have no waist so like long tops that skim over the bulges. My winter clothes are pretty monochrome but my summer ones are much more colourful.

kitty you certainly don't look like a sack of spuds in your photographs. I have often been told I have a great pair of legs but when I look in a full length mirror I can see my mother over my shoulder saying "Titty bottle legs, that's what you've got".

Talking about my mother Ariadne I inherited her awful hooves feet! All my adult life I have battled with hard skin on my heels and toes and cracked heels. I once went to a chiropodist and he said there was nothing much wrong with them, gave them a good file and then joked on my way out that I was now 2 inches shorter. (Stop waffling sook!)

Browsing in Bargain Madness on Friday I noticed they were selling foot treatments which turned out to be little pixie boots made of plastic. They have an inner lining which is impregnated with tea tree oil, peppermint, shea butter and other goodies. You simply slip them on your feet and relax for 20 mins. I thought I would kill two birds with one stone so I popped on a chocolate face mask and decided to spend my relaxation time on gransnet. Thank goodness we don't use Skype on here I wasn't a pretty sight grin

I agree with all before me, finding attractive clothes to suit the mature figure is like looking for hens' teeth. I'm not going to moan about this any more as I've promised myself that I will forthwith get out my beautiful ornament of a sewing machine and, motivated by the new programme 'The great British Sewing Bee' once again start to make my own.

Jane thanks for the tip 're T shirts. This thread is making me smile. I want some pixie boots too!

Have you noticed how the ads on the Gransnet banner often match whatever the thread's about?
I'm currently looking at an ad for American Apparel mens' underpants, in a range of 'vibrant' clours.

Yes, I'd noticed that sometimes, jane.

Today my 'style' is "hengin' oot" – black denim troosers, white short-sleeved tee, tucked in because of waistline draughts (!), Lands End 3/4 sleeved stripey tunic, and an ancient pale blue (matches one of the stripes) cashmere jumper that isn't as long as the tunic.

Actually, that's pretty much my everyday style, with variations on the jumper theme, some of which include darns and patches.

Wanted: Trousers that come up to the waist or just above. And without patronising comments from a catalogue ("We've listened to you!") which offers ONE style on the waist. Odd that belts on coats and dresses are on the anatomical waist, while trousers seem to have completely lost the concept. Tie things on dresses? No thanks! Especially as they're all up round my ribs. I may have shrunk a bit but I am still 5 foot 8 inches.

Ladies, what looks can we adopt? I am considering:

New Age fortune teller
Rock Chick
Goth
Trailer Trash

wink

Sook Mon 06-May-13 21:15:23

Richmonde Go for Rock Chick grin

Grannyknot Not sure where you are? Pixie boots are from Bargain Madness (B+M) 99p per pack. B+M took over quite a few of the Woolworths stores in the Northwest.

I get really annoyed to find pretty tops / tunics that are spoiled by having a tie round the back, also tops that have an elasticated edge. They always seem to grip me round my bottom. As I've got older I find I'm spending all my time in trousers / jeans / crops and hardly ever get round to wearing a skirt. Especially true in summer when you can't disguise white legs any more with black tights. I have tried dresses but my bust is fairly ample and by the time I find a dress to fit there, it's hanging off my shoulders.
This summer will find me in a variety of crops, weather permitting, and some cool cotton tunics or tops that drift over my lumpy bits as that's most of me. Necklines as wide / low as possible without revealing bra straps or cleavage. No longer a pretty sight. Does anyone have a favourite website for clothes for those of us who want to be cool and comfortable this summer without leaning towards 'frumpy'? confused

East and phase eight!

I loathe most clothes made from acetate, sticky and slimy in summer and offering no warmth in winter.

I too hate clothes with little stringy sashes that tie at the back, I cut them off.

I love low waisted trousers, I am very narrow between waist and crotch and low waisted trousers fit me neatly at waist level, What Landsend call 'regular' fit are either a comfy fit under the arm pits or I end up with the crotch of the trousers being at mid thigh level. neither is a good look.

I hate high heels. I couldn't get on with them back in the 60s and nothing has improved. I like heels but I must be able to walk at least a mile in them in comfort.

Ariadne Wed 08-May-13 19:32:59

But, Flickety you could just do car to bar in heels? I couldn't, however..

Enviousamerican Wed 08-May-13 19:48:04

Do you have the Red Hat Society ? It's very big over here, though I don't know anyone in it.

FlicketyB Wed 08-May-13 19:54:04

Neither could I, as I got out of the car I would catch the heel in something, edge of car, hem of dress, or I would catch them on my leg and ruin my tights.

Anyway been to M&S and bought a pair of flower patterned shoes with the dinkiest of narrow low Louis heels and I will be able to walk to village shop and back in them in comfort. Wouldn't buy anything else in M&S, too shoddy, but their shoes are still good.

Oldgreymare Wed 08-May-13 20:33:38

Enviousamerican yes! The red hat society was fairly popular few years ago but seems less so today.
I bumped into a group of American visitors in Bath, wonderfully colourful in their red and purple, and obviously having a fun time. Some time later, I saw a group similarly attired as I waited for a train at Halifax station.

FlicketyB Wed 08-May-13 20:34:55

I loathe that poem. I have no desire to be an old bat

No one has mentioned Uniqlo. Huge variety of t shirt styles and jeans . The sizes are brilliant too. They've only got shops in london I think but they do online. I have just bought my summer wardrobe from them , they have a Celia Birtwell print range which took me back to the 60s.

janeainsworth Thu 09-May-13 07:07:32

suzied I like Uniqlo too. I have some of their heattech long-sleeved t-shirts for wearing under things in the winter or just as tops by themselves, and a really good quality long white cotton shirt that cost about £15 if I remember rightly.

Rosiebee Thu 09-May-13 08:54:24

Just visited Uniqlo website. Some lovely clothes there. BUT, very depressed when I checked our their sizes. L = 14 and XXL + 18! sad
