I'm a size 20/22 and 5'5" tall and, with a mid thigh top, I don't look like humpty dumpty! I may even go out in them!grin

kittylester Mon 06-Oct-14 10:10:43

I echo Ariadne's post, pompa.

I'm wearing my leggings today and I love them!! grin

pompa Mon 06-Oct-14 10:16:40

I'll stick with socks, much cheaper than therapy.

Pittcity Mon 06-Oct-14 10:30:17

Dress, leggings, socks and boots today as it is raining and jeans are a b* to get dry!

I think babies have adorable feet grin

etheltbags1 Mon 06-Oct-14 11:03:32

No Im not winding anyone up, I have said before that I appreciate the advice given in previous posts and I really don't have anyone to discuss things with (sometimes you cant discuss things with close family or friends).
I put my age as 60, knowing that in ..... days I will be 60 and it would be difficult to change, that's all.
thank you , those who said my photo is good, I picked the best of a bad bunch, my babies are beautiful though. both baby and cats.
Elegran if Ive huffed you Im sorry.

I guess that if I work hard this week and next I will have the dreaded 'date' over and done with. im scared of being old and ill and that's what I associate with getting older. Im also narked that the government has raised the retiring age, although Im not alone, I would have been retiring in the next week or so and claiming my OAP and maybe just working a couple of days a week.

etheltbags1 Mon 06-Oct-14 11:04:30

Its peeing with rain here today and Im working in Newcastle, yuk, so im putting leggings on under my trousers.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 06-Oct-14 11:10:11

Think you are being a bit silly about your sixtieth tbh. There are plenty of us on here who would love to have their sixties over again. I for one could still give grandsons a run for their money when playing football. Suddenly, can't hardly run at all. Enjoy your sixties. Great time of life.

(Don't get me wrong though. Seventies aren't that bad. So far.)

HollyDaze Mon 06-Oct-14 11:28:37

FWIW ethel, your post Sun 05-Oct-14 20:58:30 made me laugh - especially the bit ^ I also hate baggy jog bottoms in men, I don't like to see the outline of their sex organs wobbling to and fro.^ grin

If pompa didn't take offence, I wouldn't worry about it (can't say I saw anything much in ethel's posts to take hump about tbh).

pompa Mon 06-Oct-14 11:51:13

To whom it may concern (or might vaguely be interested).

No way have I got the hump, I say and take everything in good heart, I like to wind conversations up, sometimes it backfires, and I get all I deserve. smile

As winter seems to have crashed in, leggings under trouser sounds a good idea.

Some of the views regarding mens dress sense reminds me of Onslow in Keeping up Appearances. Which whilst I have been recovering, has not been far off the target.

for the older woman a nicely tailored skirt takes a lot of beating confused

I don't think many of us go in for the Miss Marple look these days.

pompa Mon 06-Oct-14 12:39:49

The Miss Marple look was definitely NOT what I had in mind, I guess my descriptions are a bit off. I'll stick to DIY in future.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 06-Oct-14 12:54:27

pomps I think that might be a good idea. grin

One of my real-life friends has rebelled all of a sudden. She is just 63 and her husband has ruled what she has worn ever since they married - but he is now bedridden, since roughly a year ago. She bought a pair of dark leopardskin-print leggings, not cheap ones, and a long black jumper and wore them to do the housework in, but to please him she changed before she went out anywhere. Then for her birthday her daughter bought her a biker jacket - so went out for lunch with her wearing the whole ensemble! Her DH was livid, but there was nothing he could do about it. Apparently she teamed it with a pair of biker boots, heaven only knows when she acquired them. I bet she looked really good.

Every time I saw her, she would be in the sort of outfit that I remember my old teachers at school would be in - skirt and neat blouse or wide-legged trousers and sensible jumper. I thought she was much older than she is.

sherish Mon 06-Oct-14 14:02:54

Good for her!!!! The worm needs to turn sometimes.

Purpledaffodil Mon 06-Oct-14 17:32:24

Thanks jingl I was anxious my sartorial moaning had hidden patronising overtonesgrin.
Lundylinda. If you wanted yet more Mystery boots, Hotter have a sale on line and they have dark blue or mushroom ones for £45! I googled Hotter codes and got free delivery too!

FlicketyB Mon 06-Oct-14 17:54:09

I would never let DH dictate what I wear, nor do I question what he wears. I think we are both adults and should be capable of making our own decisions about what we wear and where we wear it and buy it for ourselves as well.

MiceElf Mon 06-Oct-14 18:25:02

I reckon I could wear sackcloth and ashes and HymnsElf wouldn't notice.

alternativegran Mon 06-Oct-14 18:25:44

I have just come back to the thread, I do like Yogagrans idea of a regular style thread, I felt lost when I went to buy my jeans. There were leggings, jeggings, treggings, short legs, boot legs etc etc. I hadn't got a clue.

It would be useful if shops like M&S had posters around with women in their 60s to 90s incorporating the latest trends but without looking like mutton dressed as lamb. Wish I could return to the seventies and wear long skirts, floppy hats and shawls.

Scaredycat1 Mon 06-Oct-14 18:43:43

I agree. This thread has been so much more practical and helpful than the Autumn style blog .

Ariadne Mon 06-Oct-14 18:52:28

Yes, it has!

KatyK Mon 06-Oct-14 19:23:01

I have found this thread useful too. My DH rarely notices what I wear either. One day when I was still working, I was setting off for work in a plain black skirt (old) and a lovely new bright green top. I said to DH 'does this suit me? He replied 'oh yes that's a lovely new skirt'. I said 'nice try, wrong end'. confused

hildajenniJ Mon 06-Oct-14 19:23:39

What's wrong with long skirts, and shawls? I'll forego the floppy hat if you don't mind. If you saw me you'd understand why! DH loves me in a long skirt I have several and still wear them out in town.
Just come back from Cotton Traders having bought myself new dark grey cords, a couple of base layer roll necks and a long cardigan. I've made a start on the new winter wardrobe, what next? I need shoes and boots [groan] I have fairly narrow feet and hate shopping for shoes.

Coolgran65 Mon 06-Oct-14 19:27:37

I've loved this thread - and enjoyed the humour also.

I sometimes ask DH for his opinion on some item of clothing (if I'm not sure), he will tell the truth (and receipt for return will be at the ready just in case).

But my friend would say, if you're not sure then you shouldn't buy it. However sometimes we like to try something outside of what we would normally choose and then I do appreciate an opinion.
I want to be a little funky without looking stupid.

Purpledaffodil Mon 06-Oct-14 21:14:26

Coolgran65 "I want to be a little funky without looking stupid" exactly sums up my aim too. Not always easy is it? smile

Ana Mon 06-Oct-14 21:25:29

Oh, hooray HildajenniJ - someone else with narrow feet! smile
There are so many 'wide fitting' shoes and boots around which are like boats on my feet.

In the past Rieker I've found standard fit to be OK but I've a feeling they've got wider...Surely my feet can't have shrunk? shock

Treebee Mon 06-Oct-14 22:00:00

I have narrow feet too, AA fitting. There are so many of us around!
I get my shoes from Special Feetures.
They send you a chart to draw round your feet on, which you send back to them and they advise you whether a style you like will suit your feet.
In many years of using them I've only had to send back one pair.
Wish I could just buy shoes from a local shop though!
