I've got this jumper.....

I bought it in early December.

Now, I have certain criteria for jumpers, firstly that they should be of a certain length, to (hopefully) cover the worst of the rather large thighs.
Tick.
Secondly, they should be not too "clingy" (very unflattering) nor too baggy (looks like you are trying to hide in it blush
Tick
I'm not averse to a three quarter length sleeve, as long as it comes halfway between the elbow & the wrist
Tick
Black is good, goes with lots of things
Tick
Interesting texture is nice, can give an item of clothing a bit of a twist
Tick
OK, I have a long, black, three quarter length sleeve, very fluffy jumper.

So why, when I wear it, do I look as if I'm wearing an incomplete gorrila suit?confused

I would say avoid black for a jumper. A soft grey ( or just about any other colour that's not too garish) would be more flattering with black trousers.

That did make me chuckle phoenix!!

I sympathise.

I bought a beautiful pale grey and white jumper that fits almost all your criteria . Wearing it with pride at Christmas my 4 year old grandson climbed on my lap and stroked my arm and said ' I love your jumper Nana . You feel like the Gruffalo!'

At least he didn't say I LOOKED like the Gruffalo.

Reminds me of some chocolate coloured knitting wool I accidently bought , it was of the furry novelty brand . I knit a slouchy hat but it never saw the light of day .............. eldest GS thought I had knit an Afro WIG , he laughed so much I thought he was going to do himself an injury !

aggie! grin

We need a selfie. Can't judge without.

LOL!

At Christmas I sent for a lambswool jumper in a lovely turquoise colour, long, slit sides, cable-knit, looked lovely on the model, but the 'lamb' must have been a very elderly sheep with the kind of wool normally used for carpets (hard and very scratchy) and it made me look like a Turquoise Teletubby.

jings my initial reaction to your post is "noooo" but I will see what I (or Mr P) can do! grin

Today I am wearing it with a caramel coloured skirt, thick black tights and boots, but I still think that there is something about it that has a touch of the gorilla outfit about it!

I have a similar texture one in cream, and also in a sort of ice blue shade.

Following on with the theory, one should look like half a polar bear costume, but somehow it doesn't (well, at least I don't think it does), it just seems to be the black one!

Jalima Tue 12-Jan-16 19:32:21

I bet it looks lovely, is it just you? (or does Mr P think the same? grin)

Jalima Tue 12-Jan-16 19:33:10

ps I have never seen a gorilla in a caramel coloured skirt, thick black tights and boots wink

Is it the fluffiness that's the problem?

If I had a fluffy one in camel, I would look like a large teddy bear.

Teetime Tue 12-Jan-16 20:07:41

Perhaps if you add some beads - you never see gorillas in beads do you?

Jalima Tue 12-Jan-16 20:08:49

Wear it on a foggy day?
'Gorilla in the Mist'?

JackyB Tue 12-Jan-16 20:49:03

I've given up on jumpers completely. Sack of potatoes. I stick to tops, like tee shirts with long sleeves, and a blazer or cardigan over the top.

Jalima Tue 12-Jan-16 20:52:41

phoenix could never look like a sack of potatoes smile
(Unlike me)

phoenix Tue 12-Jan-16 21:25:40

Thanks for the replies, some have made megrin !
Teetime I'm a great fan of necklaces and scarves, they can give a real lift to a plain top, Jalima, why would you say that I could never look like a sack of potatoes? Have we met, are you someone with a new name?

Indinana Tue 12-Jan-16 22:11:38

Haha! I too have certain criteria for jumpers - chief of which is the length which must be sufficient to prevent my midriff from peeping out when I reach up for something, or wriggle about on the sofa. In other words, it has to overlap my trousers by around 6" minimum. Not always easy to find, but I found no less than FOUR in Sainsbury the other day, so I snapped them all up smile.
I'm a little too large to carry off a fluffy jumper, though. Some years ago I knitted myself a fluffy mohair cardigan. It was beautiful yarn and I couldn't wait to finish it. The moment I'd been waiting for arrived. I tried the cardi on, turned to look in the mirror, and couldn't get the bloody thing off quickly enough. I looked about 3 sizes larger than usual. That was an expensive mistake sad.

It's actually more than fluffy, I've just remembered that it was described in store as an "eyelash" jumper confused

kittylester Wed 13-Jan-16 09:40:31

It's not my eyelashes then phoenix or you would be walking round wearing very little! sad

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 13-Jan-16 09:42:37

Do we know yet how Jalima knows which styles are likely to suit phoenix? (Just out of interest)

Katek Wed 13-Jan-16 09:44:10

I have the rest of the gorilla outfit in panto wardrobe dept if you need to borrow anything to complete your ensemble, Phoenix! (Why am I thinking Maureen Lipman and 'he'll love it when he gets the matching socks......'?)
