My jawline is getting rather downy. Any tips for dealing with this simply and not making it worse? I fear most hair removal products would - as things are at the moment - be using a sledge-hammer to crack a nut.

Down is one thing that we all have to a greater or lesser degree and is entirely natural, 'sprouters' however are something entirely different (even if natural). shock

Do you use one of those lit up magnifiers by any chance? hmm

Whatever you do, don't be tempted to shave it. That will make the hair grow back thicker and coarser.

There's a gadget someone once recommended on here - forget what it's called but it was cheap from amazon. It's a bit like a long spring with a little handle at each end and you roll it over the hair and it tweezes it out. That's very good (a bit painful but effective)

A bit of down I agree is fine (if it's fair) but more than a bit can look awful, especially in sunlight!

Shaving cannot make hair grow back 'thicker and courser' as all you are doing is effectively cutting it off where it emerges from the epidemis and not touching the point of growth, which is the hair follicle,

However it can appear to grow thicker and courser as all the hairs which have been shaved off will all regrow at the same time and all reappear together.

I would have it waxed by a professional every so often.

Coolgran65 Fri 25-Mar-16 14:39:10

Waxing by a professional is the way to go.

ellarussell I am assuming that you are quite new because if you look at some of the old threads you will get hints, tips and makes of gadgets. This subject was discussed at great length a couple of months or so ago. Welcome!

I have dark hair, well it's white now, but I have dark hairs that suddenly sprout on my chin and other odd places on my face and I go and have them waxed, eyebrows as well, once a month. I have been going so long that I now have a special rate. Works really well, also it's worth entioning if you have an undetected thyroid problem you tend to get facial hair.

What about that device they are always advertising on the shopping channels the "No no pro". It's supposed to stop the hairs from growing altogether but I don't know anyone who has used it for real. Does it really work as its a bit prices?tbusmile

Charleygirl Sat 26-Mar-16 09:10:57

It does not have good reviews so I personally would stay well clear of it as there are cheaper items which work better.

Minder Sat 26-Mar-16 09:11:11

I have mine waxed, along with my top lip and my eyebrows about every 6 weeks. I still get the odd dark ones showing but I pull those out with tweezers.

Lindill49 Sat 26-Mar-16 09:15:32

I use Nair facial hair removing cream once a month. 6 minutes and you're fuzz free for up to 4 weeks. Simples!!

bounceyben Sat 26-Mar-16 09:15:32

yes a NO NO does work

cherryblossom Sat 26-Mar-16 09:19:20

I bought that springy thing from newspaper mag, useless plus I felt ripped off as I saw same product online for half the price drhhh. Have shaved a few times with no noticeable thickening regrowth. Plus DH will offer to tweezer if asked especially on chinny chin chin ha, ha.

Angela1961 Sat 26-Mar-16 09:21:02

I've got the spring hair remover. It is very, very cheap on Amazon comes free delivery from China and costs a couple of pounds. It's painful to start with but you get used to it ! I was send 2 and 6 months later they are still working. You can see them working on You Tube.

Nelliemoser Sat 26-Mar-16 09:24:55

If they are dark hairs laser treatment can make a big difference.

Electrolysis is a permanent solution. Most of mine are too white to be able to do laser treatment now. If only that was around as an option years ago.

paola Sat 26-Mar-16 09:25:23

If it's soft down, I would just bleach, or if there's a lot of it, wax. For sprouters, laser treatment can't be beaten. I had mine done about six years ago, and have just started again. You need a few sessions, but it's well worth it.

Neversaydie Sat 26-Mar-16 09:29:03

I have the spring thing. Was about 99p. But cannot get it to work .DD 1 now has it
I have mine threaded along with top lip about every 6weeks. I tweezer the odd ones that sprout in between

Maggiemaybe Sat 26-Mar-16 09:33:46

This one? I bought mine nearly 2 years ago and recommended it on another thread at the time, and it's still going strong. I wouldn't worry too much about the negative reviews as a lot of them seem to be reviewing something else entirely (there are no blades and it's not an eyebrow trimmer confused). I'd say give it a try, what have you got to lose? 97p, that's what!

MaryXYX Sat 26-Mar-16 09:39:52

I use an epilator (Braun Epil) on other areas but my facial hair is still too heavy. I would use it if I was down to sparse dark hairs. I've had £2096 worth of electrolysis so far but I still shave (almost) every day. Electrolysis does work but it's very expensive for more than small clumps of hairs.

12lampton34 Sat 26-Mar-16 09:46:41

Thats what I do neversaydie doesnt take long I have facial at the same time threading is the way to go and its nice to pamper yourself every 4 to 6 weeks

Ronniejt28 Sat 26-Mar-16 09:47:42

I don't think of down as being a problem, but I do suffer from 'witchy poo' whiskers, those long white hairs that seem to grow overnight. I usually have a pair of tweezers in the bathroom and carefully and closely scrutinise my face and pluck them out. My mum, in her 90's, grows a beard if left unchecked and the Nursing Home do shave her face but she hates it.

mischief Sat 26-Mar-16 09:53:10

I tweezer mine and shave in between if I don't have the time. Don't have many so this way of control works for me.

carolmary Sat 26-Mar-16 09:59:47

I have a Braun epiilator; I've had it for years but I am sure you can still get ithem or something similar. It's a bit painful at first, but you get used to it. i use mine about once a fortnight or so and it works brilliuantly. the more often you use it the less it hurts.
Cheaper than a professional wax and slightly less painful.I have tried facial hair removing cream but find it is no good on white hairs.
I saw this middle-aged woman in Morrison's yesterday, she had a more luxuriant moustache than my husband's. (I do not exaggerate) better a bit of discomfort than looking like that. To be fair though, I suspect the poor lady may have had a mental problem.

mernice Sat 26-Mar-16 10:22:11

The amazing little machine from Amazon is a Wizzit. It is, on my type of hairs, absolutely amazing. Totally recommend.
