Long hair

Who has long hair, and what style. I still have mine long but am mindful of wanting a style to suit my age (63). Love to hear about others with long hair and how you wear it.

Luckygirl Fri 23-Sept-16 18:38:41

I am 68 and have long dark brown greyless hair. I like to wear it in plaits best, but a bit too girly for some occasions, so I sometimes do one plait at the back or a very loose pony tail with the band at about shoulder level.

I have an assortment of beak clips and other grabbers, and I wear it in all sort of different ways.

Sometimes I create 3 beak-clipped whirls at the back and I like that; also the sort of roll at the back like the 1940s if I can be bothered with the fiddle-faddle that requires.

I do not care one jot about what suits my age!

Incidentally I wash my hair in the shower whilst it is still in plaits - it is so much easier to towel dry with less dripping about like a wet dog!

luckygirl I'm not envious of many things in life but the discription of your hair made my green eyes go even greener. I was blessed with very good teeth, though. Please don't tell me you have those as well, that's not fair envy

I am trying to grow mine, only just below chin, very thick and bushy, though I have found a lot of hairs coming out recently! I'd like it several inches longer. Am scared to go for a trim, as they always cut too much off and I never get it longer.

I find it easier to manage when a bit longer, can put it up in a clip etc. Also I like feeling it swishing around. It looks very unfeminine on me when short.

emmasnan Fri 23-Sept-16 19:05:54

I have long hair, usually at shoulder level or slightly longer, it has thinned a lot recently so looks straggly if longer. Has always been difficult to style and I hate styling it, so clean and straight is fine by me.
It is going grey so I dye it back to slightly lighter than the original colour, a light gold brown (almost ginger).
I find it very low maintenance and I don't really mind what others think it's my hair! I'm 60.

My straight hair's halfway down my back and is at the moment purple, blue and pink! I wear it up in a gripper with whispy tendrils that escape of their own accord. It's very fine now, so when I do wear it down I'll put it in little plaits to sleep in overnight, and when dried and brushed it leaves my hair quite bushy and 'crinkly'

Luckygirl Fri 23-Sept-16 21:33:49

Great Bohemian - I have always said that I will go pink if I go grey!

Greenfinch Fri 23-Sept-16 21:46:49

I remember meeting bohemian at one of our Oxford meet ups and can confirm that her hair looked great. I think it was purple then as that was our colour of recognition

boheminan Fri 23-Sept-16 23:03:53

Well! Thank you Greenfinch. When I was in my 20's I always vowed I'd never become 'one of the blue rinse brigade' - so there's an advert for never knowing quite what the future might bringhmm (have you changed your name by the way?)

I'm 62 and my hair is just passed my shoulders - it's very fine and has been so many colours and styles over the years as all old photos show! As it's now definitely grey at the front I've opted for it to be blonde which doesn't show the regrowth so badly and I have it coloured every six weeks. I generally wear it fastened up with a clip with the side bits pulled down - I have always had a fringe too. I've just bought one of those straightening brushes which works ok but doesn't seem any different to the normal hair straightener I've had for years. I'd love to dye it purple and blue but then would worry that I'd have to dress to match my hair grin

I've had long hair most of my life. I twist it up and pin it to the back of my head most of the time. Sometimes have it in a plait down my back or just gripped into a ponytail. That's been my style for about thirty years: easy, no fuss.

Before that I wore it in two plaits when plaits weren't fashionable. Sometimes I wrapped them round my head in what I thought was Heidi style.

Greenfinch Sat 24-Sept-16 07:58:12

Boheminan
There are blue rinses and blue rinses!Yours was very subtle.
Yes,I used to be Gorki. My daughter didn't like the fact that this is what my grandchildren call me and this is well known at their school. She thought someone might recognise me!

glammanana Sat 24-Sept-16 08:33:02

I've always had long hair just except for a very short while 10yrs ago when I had a shoulder length bob which I soon let grow out as it was to much fuss to keep it styled as it should be.
I wear my hair in a big bun on top most days or a messy plait if going somewhere smart I will have it up in a french pleat type roll or a black bull-dog clip which I have loads of.I find it so easy to manage when its long,at present it is past my waist with a full thick fringe so I can do the trimming myself every few months.

Pamaga Sat 24-Sept-16 09:17:29

I have longish hair, dark brown going grey. I tend to wear a hairband (one with teeth) to keep it back of my face and like, in the summer, to wear sunglasses on top to give some height. It is fairly curly and there's lots of it so it is quite full at the sides. I never thought it was anything special but hairdressers rave about it which is very gratifying! In very hot weather I will wear it up but it tends to make me look somewhat severe so I prefer it down.

Rosina Sat 24-Sept-16 09:21:41

Oh glammanana I am so envious! Want to swap heads? I would love a big messy bun or plait - they look so elegant. My hair is just between jaw and shoulder length, fine as a baby's hair, and needs washing and styling every day to keep it in a straight bob. Have tried different lengths, layers (aagh - goes wavy!) and many variants on these themes but always come back to the one length bob. Can't say I love it but it's the best I can do, other than going for a pixie cut which tempts me enormously. Just haven't got the face for that and it would take about three years to grow out again. Big sigh.

Teetime Sat 24-Sept-16 09:25:55

seacliff are we long lost sisters I'm doing the same thing . I decided my thick, curly hair would be easier to manage a bit longer and I like to wear dangly earings which I think look better (on me) if my hair is a bit longer.

Minder Sat 24-Sept-16 09:28:10

I'm 64 and I have a shoulder length bob. It's highlighted but very blonde now. I sometimes hate it because it takes me an hour to blow dry it so it's 'just right'. Even if I'm not going out, it has to be just right. I have to stick it behind my ears if I bend forwards because then it's in the way. I don't think it suits me up. Personally I think a bob will last me now, it's a style that any age can wear?

harrysgran Sat 24-Sept-16 09:28:37

Very envious of all of the ladies with long hair mine is just touching shoulder I'm really going to try and resist having it cut but usually it starts looking a bit messy and I end up going back to my usual short bob which seems obligatory once you pass fifty but not this timesmile

dramatictessa Sat 24-Sept-16 09:33:36

Over the years, my hair has seen many different styles, but now it's long, and straightened to get rid of all the wispiness. There's lots of it and it's very fine. Usually, I leave it down, but will put it in a french plait, or just in a bulldog type clip, when it's hot. I've never learnt to style it properly, it just doesn't seem to hold curls or waves. My daughter's getting married soon and I would love to have a fancy hair do for that, but it will probably just be down and as straight as I can get it. It went white very early on, and I started dying it 25 years ago. Last year, I decided to go back to my natural colour, and am getting lots of compliments, so am really happy that I've taken the plunge!

Persistentdonor Sat 24-Sept-16 09:34:11

I know someone who is as short and stout as I am, but she has silver, almost white, hair below her shoulders. It is thick and she usually wears it loose held back with a gripping horse shoe type head band.

I have to say that while in general I am fairly rigid in my "mutton dressed as lamb" thoughts, she really wears it well, and I think it looks really good on her.

I suppose the fact that it is quite thick and in good condition must make the difference. I have encountered many older women who wear their long hair hanging down a bit like spaniel's ears but I don't think it does much for them. hmm

Coolaboutsixty Sat 24-Sept-16 09:34:56

I'm just trying to grow out my Judy Dench style that I've had for the last couple of years. As I'm now completely silvery grey, it seemed a good idea and has been easy to manage. The thing is, I get bored with hairstyles and yearn for a change so now trying for something longer but it takes AGES!!! Bohemian- you so tempt me with your lovely colours! I've always fancied having different coloured tips all over this spiky crop. smile

NonnaW Sat 24-Sept-16 09:45:01

I am so envious of all you ladies with long hair, I used to love mine when it was long. Sadly it has never been thick, is very fine and dead straight and I had it cut short years ago. I don't think I will even be able to grow it as far as a bob now. Still I console myself with the fact that I have no grey (yet) at 62.

oznan Sat 24-Sept-16 10:02:06

I have long, thick curly hair which is the one thing about my appearance that I have always loved so there is no way that getting older is going to make me have it cut short! It is layered to frame my face and I usually wear it down-it's so easy to look after, wash, condition and allow to dry-no hairdriers ever.In hot weather I can scoop it all up off my neck and if I am going out I will put it in a French plait or half up-do.

Skullduggery Sat 24-Sept-16 10:02:34

My hair is too fine to wear long so it's cut into a neat Bob but it's coloured silver, lilac and purple (which I do myself) and I get lots of compliments on the colour.

Wobblybits Sat 24-Sept-16 10:29:56

Long hair, this is a bit like the thread on pensions, how I wish I had any hair smile
