Gingham

I read in the weekend papers that gingham, flowers, stripes , uneven hems and the colour pink are the trends we should look out for this summer or SS17 as they call it. Anyone taking up any of these? Definitely not gingham for me my Pollyanna days are long gone.

Gingham reminds me of the summer dress I wore in my first year of Grammar School. The first photo on here gives you an idea: www.1900s.org.uk/1930s-40s-copthall.htm
Mine was made of a heavyweight blue and white check gingham. I think it had previously been a mattress cover.

On of today's papers had a feature on gingham. There was at least one garment featured that I would have worn and several others I thought about.

I am sure gingham wellies would be gorgeous

Sure, you can have black & white gingham, Hope.

We must have all had those maxi dressesgrin. I didn't mean a check shirt, Teetime. I meant a Gingham one. I am sure I have seen them, black and white can still be Gingham, can't it? You have me thinking now.

When I was first married (in the early seventies) I made myself a pink gingham maxi dress with white smocking. I must look for a photo as I want to make a smocked dress for DGD. The gingham made preparing the smocking easy.

Our summer school uniform was a double gingham, square necked dress. When we got to the 3rd.form we could choose from 3 or4 patterns and have a dress made. Mine were shirtwaisters. Still the original school gingham, but with a stiff petticoat beneath---Oh I loved them.

Oh Lord you reminded me I had a pink gingham maxi dress with heaven help us a match headscarf - I was 15!!! I suppose I would wear a checked shirt but that's not really gingham is it?

Hopehope Mon 06-Mar-17 00:10:13

In the 70's I had a Gingham maxi dress with puff sleeves, perish the thought!! I would probably wear a gingham blouse now over jeans, it can look nice and fresh. Black and white would be nice I think.

I don't do Pink. It looks nice on other People, but if I wear it I look like I have died standing up grin

But not a dress .....

Jalima Sun 05-Mar-17 19:50:10

Oh yes, I have a lilac and white gingham shirt in the wardrobe, haven't worn it for ages and it looks fine with jeans.
I must have a rummage.
If you want to be in fashion, keep everything!

I have worn a tailored pink gingham shirt, small gingham pattern in the past and would wear it again. Large red, green or dark blue gingham does call out 'soft furnishing'

downtoearth Sun 05-Mar-17 17:08:09

Have just bought new kitchen curtains in gingham

HildaW Sun 05-Mar-17 16:50:44

Or as a table cloth! wine

Jalima Sun 05-Mar-17 16:45:39

Gingham always looks fresh and lovely

That is on someone no older than about 12.

BBbevan Sun 05-Mar-17 16:35:07

Abject apologies shysal Predictive text strikes again

BBbevan Sun 05-Mar-17 16:33:29

abysmaL I had a red empire line sheath like that. Still have a piece in patchwork quilt I made my DD years ago.

KatyK Sun 05-Mar-17 16:07:51

I used to love gingham. I had gingham dresses, gingham off the should peasant tops, gingham curtains in my kitchen. I wouldn't have it or wear it now, I would feel ridiculous but loved it at the time.

M0nica Sun 05-Mar-17 15:27:41

I would wear all of them, except, perhaps, the uneven hems, but not all together. Pink is a colour that I have always found particularly flattering, especially the darker duskier rose pinks.

PoshGran Sun 05-Mar-17 15:01:47

I'm with ninathenana on this one shock Nooooo!

School summer skirts (red, green, yellow or blue gingham according to school house) and having to make cookery aprons & caps using the correct colours for pockets & matching ric-rac braiding.
The following summer term we used "leftover" gingham to assist with first attempts at smocking.

Have thus never liked gingham; nor flowery stuff, stripes make me look (& feel) like a humbug, uneven hems need sorting out...and PINK - no, nay, never....not for me!!!!

I guess I'll have to wear the same old stuff again..& again..& again (walks off into distance muttering).
grin

Ilovecheese Sun 05-Mar-17 14:44:16

shysal yes, seersucker, didn't need ironing, always a plus!

shysal Sun 05-Mar-17 14:37:04

I like my yellow gingham bedding, but wouldn't wear it nowadays, except perhaps in a shirt. I remember in my youth making a sheath dress in that gingham which had bobbles in the weave (remember that?), in jewel colours, I loved it.

Cherrytree59 Sun 05-Mar-17 13:58:14

Table clothes and picnic hampers yes
Moi? Non!

FarNorth Sun 05-Mar-17 13:53:48

I've always liked gingham, never had it as a school dress though. I wouldn't wear it now as a whole garment, but as a trim could be nice.

BBbevan Sun 05-Mar-17 13:46:04

I thought yellow was in also. Saw a middle aged woman, yesterday,in top to toe yellow. It didn't do an awful lot for her. I quite like gingham though but only a bit at a time.
