Do you use it or have you tried it? I'm reading India Knight "In Your Prime" (won it from GN) and she waxes lyrical about it for everything from skin cream to hair conditioner to cooking (wasn't sure at first whether to post this "Health").

Hate the smell. Have to back off from anyone who uses it!

MiniMouse Fri 14-Apr-17 09:01:40

Yep, use it all the time GK! Organic, unrefined pot sits on my worktop for cooking coconut rice. It's quite a strong flavour, so you need to be careful how you use it .Pot upstairs for skin care etc. Melted with beeswax it makes a lovely hand cream. It's relatively cheap - always an offer on somewhere!

Thanks mini! I'm off to check out Amazon offers.

You're welcome GK! Here's where I get mine from, although I use the local Grape Tree shop:

Thank you, all smile

Yes! I use it all the time - as a cleanser, a moisturiser, body lotion AND for oil pulling, which is an ancient Ayurvedic technique for keeping teeth and gums healthy. You take a teaspoonful and swish it round your mouth until it changes consistency: it gathers up all the bacteria - then spit it down the loo and brush your teeth as usual. My dentist keeps asking me what I'm doing cos my gums are so healthy these days. If I get toothache I just do it for longer.

As with many products there are a lot of different qualities. I buy large quantities from Costco and use it for all cooking - it does not flavour the food. I use Virgin u refined oil. You can use it for many things - that and Aloe Vera cover most things!

disgruntled that's interesting.

I got mine from Aldi too, it's a huge jar for only £2.99. I've not used it in cooking, only as a moisturiser see other thread re very dry skin! It's very good on heels, elbows and knees. The smells doesn't bother me at all because it soon wears off.

starlily106 Sat 15-Apr-17 09:37:01

My granddaughter and I use it every day. Hair, hands, feet, face, face, neck, never tried it for cooking, ( I use fry lite coconut oil for that).

I bought a £1 tub from Savers a little while ago to try it. I use it for my hands and cuticles and now recommend it to the ladies attending the LGFB workshops - LGFB, Look Good Feel Better is the charity which helps ladies and teenagers deal with the visible side effects of cancer treatment. I found that coconut oil is one of the best (and cheapest) for skin care, especially for hands, cuticles, elbows, knees and feet as starlily said. Brilliant stuff!

Theoddbird Sat 15-Apr-17 10:17:12

I use it on my face. It is amazing when I get an eczema attack on my forehead (due to allergies) I bought the tub in Sainsburys...was where the olive oil etc was. Now heard it is cheaper in Aldis. Tub goes on for ever smile Oh and leaves skin so soft smile

Apparently a dollop of it improves green tea.

Candelle Sat 15-Apr-17 10:38:25

Grannyknot, many thanks for your post. I am interested in trying this oil (think I have some lurking in the back of a cupboard but never used it).

Disgruntled, I just had a quick look on line and it seems that one needs to keep it in the mouth for 20 minutes for the purposes of oil pulling. Is this really easily done? I struggle with mouthwash after 60 seconds as it wants to be expelled!

How do you keep it from falling out - especially if one is doing other things whilst waiting for the 20 minutes to expire?

janeainsworth Sat 15-Apr-17 10:43:36

Candelle I'd stick with the mouthwash if I were you - that and cleaning your teeth effectively, ie with a toothbrush and some means of cleaning between your teeth - tepe brushes or dental floss.

I have had a big jar in the cupboard, wondering how best to use it. Thanks to this thread, I have some ideas at least. I already use coconut oil spray for cooking. I am very interested in whooshing it round the gums for a healthy mouth, especially as Disgruntled's dentist is impressed. Way to go!

Craftycat Sat 15-Apr-17 10:53:19

I wish I could use it but UGH!! Even the thought of the smell of it nauseates me. I would love to cook with it as I am on low carb diet but not a chance.
Mind you coconut is the ONLY thing I cannot stand at any price so I'm not doing too badly.

SunRa Sat 15-Apr-17 11:09:47

Don't spit it down the loo - it solidifies and then joins the fat that's coagulating in the sewerage system which blocks the pipes!

Juney64 Sat 15-Apr-17 14:32:13

I had a rash on one of my legs for months - tried everything including steroid cream and Aveena.

After three weeks of applying coconut oil the rash was gone. I now use it on my skin and hair. You don't need very much. A little goes a long way.

It seems there are different grades for different purposes. You can read more about these here if you're interested...

I buy mine from The Body Shop. I make the assumption that if it's from there - this grade is for the body haha. There are always Body Shop discount vouchers online.

Way back in the 60s, my sister and her husband used to use coconut oil for getting a good sun tan!

GrammaH Sat 15-Apr-17 16:44:20

I had a really stubborn & painful anal fissure which refused to clear up. I found somewhere on the internet that coconut oil would cure it & sure enough, it did! What a relief!

Elrel Sat 15-Apr-17 17:38:32

Worth spending £2.99 in Aldi to try it out after such enthusiastic recommendations!
