Buying two of the same thing

I like remarkably little of what passes for “fashion”these days and find myself tempted to buy TWO of something I really like, which is really comfortable or flattering, (sometimes in a different colour, but not necessarily) so that when it wears out or gets too scruffy, I shall have a “spare” .
Does anybody else do this?

I buy doubles of all shoes and boots as I have difficult feet to fit and rejoice when I find something I love . I also have numerous top , cardigan and jeans doubles too and have done since I was a teenager .

On the subject of repeat handbags - I know somebody who has over 40 of the same Mulberry handbag in different colours and leathers out of her collection of over 200 . She has even more of a much higher luxury brand .

JaneD3 Tue 06-Feb-18 07:26:26

Good lord *NotaGran53 *- more expensive than Mulberry?!
I have multiples of several things but also buy a second lipstick if I find a good one. One for the dressing table, to use when I do my face, and one for my handbag. Otherwise I spend the day with full paint and no lippy because I forget to put it on!

MawBroon Tue 06-Feb-18 08:25:08

That lippy idea is such a sensible one, JaneD3 why did nobody tell me about it before!

Trouble is that too often you don’t discover that you have the perfect item until it’s too late to buy another one.

M&S stopped doing their classic t-shirts with 3/4 sleeves a couple of years ago I couldn't find them in any of their stores, last week I saw them again on their website and ordered 4 in different colours so I am sorted for the summer now.

DanniRae Tue 06-Feb-18 09:22:26

I bought a pair of boots from Clarks that were so comfortable that I got my husband to buy me another pair for Christmas.
I have 3 pairs of M&S black jersey pull-on trousers. Not too stylish but soooooooooo comfortable!!
And as for knickers I found some from M&S that are comfortable and quite sexy too so have plenty of them too in different colours (some size 16 - put away - and now size 18)
grin

I do it with trousers as I'm a 'funny' fit, knickers and some jumpers/cardys but not dresses where I like a variety of style.

Me too, it’s not often I find something really special these days so would def buy a 2nd one in another colour.

adaunas Tue 06-Feb-18 10:22:54

Brown trousers! If you need them when they are not in vogue it’s impossible. M&S had Per Una in the sale so I bought grey, mulberry, navy and 2 brown. One brown pair is still in the bag till I need them.

I've always bought in 'twos' but I put it down to being a Gemini! Seems it's just common sense ?
Can't afford to do it much now so I just stick to underwear and makeup.

HootyMcOwlface Tue 06-Feb-18 10:31:37

I have a lovely comfy pair of shoes which were getting a bit shabby from constantly being on my feet, so bought some more before they went out of stock (in 2 colours). But they aren't as comfy as the original pair.

millymouge Tue 06-Feb-18 10:36:03

Yes I do and then put them away until I need them. My daughters always had a little laugh about mums extras but now they are older they have started doing the same thing. Say they can see the sense of doing it.

luluaugust Tue 06-Feb-18 10:38:52

Wish I had done it more often with shoes.

Kim19 Tue 06-Feb-18 10:42:32

Such a good idea that I haven't practised nearly enough. I readily remember my times of regret. Many tips here which I'm taking to heart. Thanks for the regularly constructive stuff everyone. Appreciated.

I hope M&S never stop making my favourite bra that I've been buying in different colours (with matching comfy but pretty knickers) for a few years now. If I ever find the perfect fit jeans, I'll have to buy 2 or 3 pairs!

Bamm Tue 06-Feb-18 10:46:36

I do this ! If I find I am really pleased with something I seem to want to stockpile it, well at least buy a few in case discontiued ( make up or skin care ) . I often buy two items of clothing the same; at the moment I have two black cashmere cardigans the same, two thin black three quarter sleeved jumpers, two pairs leopard ballet flat shoes and two small leopard across the body bags because I love these items so much !

Witzend Tue 06-Feb-18 10:49:13

Yes, especially shoes, since I have such a job finding any that are both comfortable and non-frumpy.

henetha Tue 06-Feb-18 10:52:01

Yes, sometimes. I recently found some really warm fleecy indoor trousers which are so cosy and comfortable, so I now have 3 pairs! It makes sense.

Carolyn99 Tue 06-Feb-18 11:01:44

In different colours certainly and shoes definitely. As. DH says ‘I know what I like’

Theoddbird Tue 06-Feb-18 11:09:01

I have found a gorgeous linen pinafore dress on ebay...I have three now in different colours. Also bought long sleeve tees the same but different colour. All because they are comfortable and adaptable

Lilyflower Tue 06-Feb-18 11:14:48

I definitely do this as you never know when the shop will stop selling the perfect item and ditch the design in favour of some fashionable monstrosity. Once buying classics and things that suit oneself, fashion is for the fashion victims!

I had a friend who used to talk about the way we all seem to have a 'sartorial timeclock'. We buy new things in new fashions but, at some point in our lives, stop moving on and stick with one style. An illustration of this is how we all laughed at our parents and grandparents' fuddy-duddy clothes which aged them so badly but we, ourselves, all wear the young person's uniform of jeans and tops. I know seventy year olds who have worn nothing else since their twenties.

henetha Tue 06-Feb-18 11:16:00

P.S. My three pairs of fleecy pants are in different colours.
I wanted a fourth colour but they were out of stock.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Tue 06-Feb-18 11:34:29

I do if they're on offer as I'm on a budget. I find that many modern t-shirts are too low cut these days which I'm not comfortable with so if I find plain ones without silly sleeves, etc I snap them up.

Nanny41 Tue 06-Feb-18 11:34:51

Like Jane D3, I buy two lipsticks of the same colour, have one in my handbag and one on the dressing table.
I bought a pair of Sketchers two years ago when I had a bad foot, they are SO comfy I wish I had bought two pairs. I wonder if there is a sale anywhere!

SueDoku Tue 06-Feb-18 11:40:40

I do this too..! I've just bought myself a lovely long cardigan and a jumper from Cotton Traders - they'd been reduced to half price in the sale, so I bought two of each (in different colours) smile
I've had things in the past that I've wished that I'd bought two of (most recently a three-quarter length raincoat that looked great - I wore it until it fell apart..!) Can't find another one anywhere... sad
