Fake tans for older skin???

We're off to Thailand in 19 "sleeps". I am plump and pale. I have fairly structured swim suits and loads of very pretty wraps but am still concerned about inflicting my white limbs on the world. I have been using a dry oil spray for a few weeks to prepare my skin for the sunshine and would like to attempt to give it a bit of a glow before we arrive. Any advice on fake tanning products?? Not looking for an orange look but just something to take the alabaster look away. confused sunshine

You could go and have a spray tan done, if you feel up to standing naked apart from a paper thong whilst its done? smile

Nothing wrong with white limbs. I’d stay alabaster and proud.

Buy a tube of Dove Summer Glow. You just put it on as a moisteriser every night and it gives you a very natural colour. My sister is always very white and she used it for a fortnight last year and was a lovely golden colour, ideal for the beach but not really a tan as such.

When I feel like this my husband used to say 'who's going to be looking at you anyway' - which on the surface might sound not so nice but actually gave me a sense of freedom. Who cares what anyone else thinks - enjoy your holiday - the shape and colour you are right now. We'll never know what other people think and it doesn't matter anyway.

I couldn’t care less what anyone else thinks. What’s wrong with being pale? It’s certainly preferable to an obviously fake tan. But we’re off to Brazil soon and apparently the advice to deter potential muggers is to blend in with the locals. hmm I doubt anyone’s going to mistake me for the girl from Ipanema.

My post has little to do with paleness or tanning, more about confidence. Two years ago we went on our first beach holiday in ages. I wanted to cover up every inch of my then heavily overweight body. Once there I saw women of every shape, but I didn't focus on their bodies - what I noticed most were the ladies enjoying themselves. One in particular had a body shape similar to mine and she was there in a bright bikini, confidently walking up and down the beach. On our latest holiday I decided to discard my hangups about myself - after all I will never see any of these people again. I came home feeling better and started dieting! Getting back to your question, I really think we are all happier if we accept our own bodies and skin, and even celebrate them. Don't fake it, be sun safe and be yourself. Prepare your skin and you will will look healthy and glowing whatever shade it is.

Maggiemaybe: I too don’t care anymore about my white limbs, as I have got older, my skin hates direct sunlight anyway. Longer floaty dresses disguise my white legs, pretty flimsy wraps disguise my white arms. I have just returned from the Carnival in Rio and danced on the sand at Ipanema ... white as a ghost, but covered in a pretty chiffon number !

Decleor Aroma Gradual Glow. It’s fantastic.
No preparation needed. Use it like any body moisturiser. Drys quickly. No streaks. No stains on clothes or bedding.
I love it. Just to take away the pale white when we can eventually bare our legs and arms again. When......
Gradually builds up colour. No orange!

I keep Dove Summer Glow and use it just before any holiday which involves swimming pools

I am plump and pale, never bothers me apart from getting the plumpness down after the winter.
Go and enjoy try the Dove summer glow have used that too.

Having had several skin cancers removed due to sun damage, I am and always will be ‘pale and interesting’ with strawberry blond (ginger) hair. Just keep your skin moisturised and glowing and be proud. Hope you have a fabulous holiday ??

After we get to a certain age people stop assessing and judging our visual attractiveness anyway. People used to comment on my size but now I am just an old lady that everyone is indulgent of smile

Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel is fast, no streaks and easy to use.

I don't know about fake tanning products but I could scream at the infantile use of 19 sleeps hmm

I wish my legs were just pale.Mine bruise at the slightest touch and also look like I’ve got brown socks on. (This is caused by varicose veins.) I usually keep my legs covered as I don’t want to make people feel ill!

Also being pale and quite plump I would say enjoy yourself but most of all do use high factor sunscreen especially on your face . I agree totally with the floaty garments and layers. If you are visiting Thailand your height makes you stand out more than you body colour or shape as they are tiny people. But they wear long wraps, men and women, so only visitors expose pale limbs. I have snorkelled there and wore a long sleeve rash vest over my costume anyway as the sun is quite fierce. Dove sounds nice to try though but forget fake or spray tan as to me it always looks so obvious.

Dove Summer Glow is very good. I use it in spring when teeshirts start to surface. Very natural product.

pamdixon Mon 05-Mar-18 12:44:36

I agree re the Dove summer glow - always use it before exposing any part of my anatomy on a sunny holiday!!

AdeleJay Mon 05-Mar-18 12:47:09

I’ve come to the conclusion that others are too worried about what they look like to worry much about what you look like. And after a certain age I fear we all become ‘invisible women’ hmm

TellNo1Ok Mon 05-Mar-18 13:02:35

I'm nearly 80...(for what it's worth!)
I regularly use Dove Summer Glow....including on my face... it gradually builds up a healthy look... no orange... and helps you keep you tan once acquired.....

you will need sun tan lotion as well .... so let me recommend Ambre Solair DRY MIST i use factor 30... it goes on sooo easily and finely ... no stickiness/ oiliness ... you can get higher factors i believe... easy to keep in your bag and top up as necessary ... watch those white shins...

have a lovely time... my neighbour just back from thailand and said she was so sweaty she felt the perspiration trickling down her back.... she loved it.

I used to use a lot of self tan before holidays which gave a lovely colour ,but , now I have brown age spots on my arms and face but now fake tan just shows the spots up as orange, so I will have to give up on fake tan I think,

Thanks for suggestions. Sorry "harrigran" about the 19 sleeps. I was an infant teacher for many years and some things never leave you. I think it's 15 now. I'll try one of the light creams and I shall step out with confidence - a wrap and a big smile cover everything.grin

Nandipandy2 Mon 05-Mar-18 15:14:50

Dove is the safe bet. I've had a few "tango" experiences in the past, smelling like a digestive biscuit. "Pale is interesting"was a favourite of my Auburn haired mum. Mum is always rightsmile enjoy your trip whatever shade you are. Ps. I like the "infantile" reference to sleeps, part of the enjoyment of most things is the anticipation.

Barmeyoldbat Mon 05-Mar-18 15:35:29

Just use sun protection and don’t worry about how you look to others be proud of who you are. Age 65 I was in Thailand, wore a tanking (spelling) so I could roll up my top and hopefully get some sun on my white jelly belly. Never did but it felt good.
