I'm looking for good quality, simple* cotton t-shirts and don't seem to be able to find any that don't cost a fortune.

*where simple means: crew neck, not too high and not too low; short sleeves but not cap sleeves, some hip-skimming shaping or straight sides; sensible sizing, i.e. designed to hang rather than cling. And made of a decent thickness of pure cotton.

Suggestions, anyone? TY in anticipation.

Assuming you are in the small to medium range - I've had good buys from Joules (not plain but an acceptable stripe), Gap (watch the sizing) H&M (Divided range is better quality), Uniqlo.

If you buy from Uniqlo online it’s very easy to send back. So you can order different sizes and try on at home. I am a size 10/12 and find I have to buy small in the vests , but M in the T shirts.

I have some classy looking scoop neck t-shirts in Pima cotton I bought years ago and still going strong.
They were from Peruvian Connection but I don't think they have the same ones now and they are very expensive. I don't know how good they will be.

Lands End are good, and definitely Uniqlo.

I second the suggestion of Kettlewell. They do a variety of styles and fabrics, but their key selling point is their colours. If you know your ‘season’ it helps.

I just got a nice one from Hush in sale. Mumsnet’s fault! It’s lovely, but not as cheap as earlier tips. Sizes come up big. Shorts I ordered have to go back. T shirt more forgiving.

Try eBay lots of different styles on there both new and second hand.

Marks & Sparks men's dept. do the very best t-shirts I've ever bought - good quality 100% cotton, v neck or round neck, sleeves that are not too short, a decent length (will cover your bum!) and a good range of colours.

The womens t-shirts in the ladies dept. leave an awful lot to be desired - the total opposite of the darn good stuff in the men's section. Naff sizing, minimum of fabric, sleeves that are little more than flappy tabs and the colours hurt my eyes!

I bought 6 in M&S sale @ £6 each, however, they are V neck with long but not tight sleeves which push up quite easily. Wash like a dream and dry in a couple of hours on a hanger with no ironing needed.
I bought a size bigger for two reasons. 1) sizes 18 and 24 were all they had (I'm a 16 on top)
2) I liked the bright white colour and curved, slightly dipped-back hem.
I wore one on Friday on a trip to Bristol Harbour Festival and it kept me cool all day.

I can recommend Lands End as their T-shirts seem to last forever and are usually a good fit.

I recommended bts t-shirts for men because this is one of the best place to buy cheap t-shirts online.

Thought it might be worthwhile resurrecting this thread now summer's on its way! I have been looking for reasonably priced well fitting plain coloured t shirts. Most seem to be long, baggy or clingy and at 5ft with a little extra around the middle they do nothing for me! Crew necks don't suit me either! I realise I'm being quite fussy but do any of you have any suggestions?

Susie42 Sat 01-May-21 13:38:51

Lands End, they're not the cheapest but I find they fit well and seem to last forever. I have a couple that are over ten years old and showing no signs of wear.

Crew do lovely tee shirts in stripes and plain colours! Well cut and good quality.
