You both look lovely, Galen.

Lisagran Sun 25-Nov-18 21:35:02

Ooh, not a very nice comment shock

PECS Sun 25-Nov-18 21:45:10

Gabriella I hope that comment was to me and not to Galen !

GabriellaG Sun 25-Nov-18 21:49:30

I'm taking the 5th wink

The Fifth Amendment gives criminal defendants the right to refuse to testify at trial. No person “shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself,” according to the U.S. Constitution.22 May 2017

Well not the kindest of comments GabriellaG but hardly criminal.

Gabriella at 74 and a retired Doctor I think I’m allowed to look matronly!
I equate that description with dignified and reserved!
I would also point out that as I’m very disabled, it took me considerable effort to stand and pose for that picture!

MiceElf Mon 26-Nov-18 06:40:38

Galen and Bella, such a beautiful picture. Grace, elegance and style.
An example to be followed.

MawBroon Mon 26-Nov-18 07:00:30

“Class” too I would say.

Urmstongran Mon 26-Nov-18 08:10:57

Well GabriellaG I’ll won’t be bobbing any curtsies then! Joking apart, sounds as though you’ve had a strong work ethic all your life and it’s paid off, which is admirable. Meritocracy rules!

GabriellaG Mon 26-Nov-18 08:45:39

Dear Galen
I apologise if my comment ruffled a few feathers, it was a side-eye joke from earlier in the thread.
As a 74yrs old (in March) retired lawyer, maybe I feel a teensy tiny bit jealous as I'm certainly not matronly (reserved, dignified) and could never get away with wearing your lovely evening dress.
The fact that you made the effort to stand for the photo says much about your propriety and stoicism.
Very best wishes
Gabriella

When Kenneth Young coined the word 'Meritocracy' it was meant to be derogatory word, not aspirational.

annodomini Mon 26-Nov-18 09:44:52

I think you mean Michael Young, father of the egregious Toby Young!

annodomini Mon 26-Nov-18 09:50:44

Sorry, M0nica, I don't mean to be patronising. It's a reflex on my part and usually I can restrain myself from making corrections. blush

Urmstongran Mon 26-Nov-18 09:53:51

Ah well MOnica in the words of the late great Morecambe & Wise ‘not a lot of people know that!’. I’m not old enough to recall the wit and wisdom of Kenneth Young. I assume he was a comedian? I was using it in it’s dictionary definition - being unaware of any humorous take! Now GabriellaG might think I was being flippant. I wasn’t! ..... oh dear I think I’ll stop digging .... ?

Urmstongran Mon 26-Nov-18 09:55:34

Don’t you just love how a thread on here can morph into something entirely different? The joys of GN indeed!

oldbatty Mon 26-Nov-18 09:57:21

Why ever would anybody want to be flippant on a thread about party frocks for Christmas.

Go and lie down in a dark room immediately and come back when you are ready to say sorry.

Bellasnana Mon 26-Nov-18 10:45:17

Well, back to the OP, I thought all the outfits shown were very uninspiring and I wouldn’t be seen dead in any of them. tchgrin

lemongrove Mon 26-Nov-18 17:48:48

A bit harsh Bella I would certainly be seen dead in them, but not alive.tchgrin

Urmstongran Mon 26-Nov-18 18:27:20

Keep up oldbatty ... I wasn’t being flippant - I just didn’t want to be perceived as such! It wasn’t about anybody’s dresses. I’d posted earlier about how topics can morph into something else. - it was actually about the use/perception of the word ‘meritocracy ‘!
No apology necessary in my opinion!

Jalima1108 Mon 26-Nov-18 18:53:03

I went to a huge M&S today and looked for dark blue velvet evening trousers. Apparently I can find some online because they didn't quite have any in the store. grin
Were they outside the store if not quite in I wondered to myself?

GabriellaG Mon 26-Nov-18 18:53:08

It's a bit like being tbe Pied Piper (one of my favourite poems)
The topic morphs and everyone troops after the diversion. winkgrin

GabriellaG Mon 26-Nov-18 18:59:46

Jalima1108
Marisota also in berry colourway.

Jalima1108 Mon 26-Nov-18 19:01:58

Thanks GabriellaG I'll take a look

As I said, I saw some nice Boden ones but they wouldn't fit me (ages 3, 4, 5 only) but they did have some for women at £80!
