Question about underwire on bras

What do the underwires actually do?
Before I had seen an underwired bra I imagined the wire somehow supported the tissue in the cup but it just sits against your chest. What am I missing?
I almost always wear a sports bra with underwiring!

m&s mismeasure , they do the out of date adding 4 inches to the rib measurement. Modern bras are sized with the rib measurement so if you go by their standards your bra is not going to fir properly if they say you're a 36C you are actually a 32FF

I agree goose1954. My M&S measurement used to be 38C but Bravissimo didn't even use a tape measure and said I should try 36G or GG depending on the style. They fit perfectly.
