Do you remember your Mum or Dad saying that?

What do you think they would have said to these?

I think Andrea Leadstrom is quite stylish - I like her coat. As Dominic that's not really appropriate for a cabinet meeting - Ok for Saturday morning to the supermarket. He is strange one though.

My mother certainly said that. I remember only too well the row I had with her over my new, brown corduroy jeans, hipsters with a little gold buckle belt. She thought they were disgusting, goodness knows why!

My response to the post is that rules of dress have changed dramatically in the last 20 years. There are few workplaces now where dress rules are in place, customer relations and uniformed staff (and women often!) excepted. I hate Andrea Leadsom, she is the epitomy of a careless, closed mind, spiteful Tory.

I remember saying that to my daughter when she was heading off for a night out dressed in a status outfit better suited for a day at work.

Love the coat.

Oopsminty Fri 04-Oct-19 09:45:13

Staid not status. 'Sighs and glares at phone'

Struggling to look trendy and up to the minute.

Oh dear, oh dear...

I liked the Ledsome outfit ( minus the boots) but Cummings always looks that way.
Strange for a man with no shortage of money, so he must be making a statement by it.

I remember getting dolled up with my friend at her house when I was about 15. We had made our own dresses and were chuffed to bits with ourselves. She asked her mum how we looked and she said 'Like two bags of potatoes tied in the middle'.

In some homes, it can be the daughters, saying to dad, as he comes downstairs, " you can't come with us, looking like that!"

sunseeker Fri 04-Oct-19 10:06:33

I recall having a very short dress (couldn't take a deep breath whilst wearing it!) which my Dad hated. One day during a blazing row about how short it was my Dad picked it up and ripped it in half saying "now you can't wear it"

Absolutely nothing to do with politics but I am not keen on her look, the makeup and the static hair.

I was a clueless youngster, thought I was fat when infact I was not. I once bought a tartan mini from a boutique and a white see through bubble blouse. I must have been about 14, totally oblivious to all.

Gaunt47 Fri 04-Oct-19 10:14:13

Mini skirts. My Nana was horrified and said, you're not going out like that? Mum was proud I looked groovy and said nothing! Then the same scenario with maxi skirts....

Times have changed and dressing for comfort is more common. DS always used to wear smart business suits but now it seems that smart casual and even jeans are acceptable in a City office. Some staff keep a suit at work in case a smarter look is suddenly needed.

Don’t like AL’s outfit but I don’t suppose she would like my plain but comfie new skirt from Weird Fish. Each to their own.

I find paying £000s for ripped jeans bizarre but then my Dad thought I was asking for trouble with my mini (even minute) skirts!

Calendargirl Fri 04-Oct-19 10:35:24

I remember wearing a black knitted long line jumper with a belt, wore it as a VERY short dress, black tights, black patent heeled brogues. Felt so cool. My poor dad looked horrified as boyfriend and I set out for the cinema, but said nothing.
It was 1973 I think.

Calendargirl Fri 04-Oct-19 10:36:31

Correction, 1971.

TrendyNannie6 Fri 04-Oct-19 10:44:54

I don’t personally like her coat but each to their own, or how Dominic is dressed for cabinet meeting lol

jaylucy Fri 04-Oct-19 10:48:21

Personally, I'd prefer if Ms Ledsom's skirt was a couple of inches longer, but she looks pretty stylish, contrasting with Ms McVey, who's dressed older than her age!
Mr Cummings - he looks like he's been sleeping in a tent somewhere under one of the bridges!
Fair enough that he dresses like that at the weekend, but this is all wrong for what should have been an important meeting - or was it a "come as you are" day ? I guess he'd have turned up in pyjamas!

Notsooldat75 Fri 04-Oct-19 10:52:10

My mother was a master at the put down. I dressed myself for a drinks party we were invited to, I came downstairs, quite pleased with how I looked.
I asked my mother if I looked all right.
She looked me up and down slowly and said “you look fine, but who’s going to look at you anyway?”

crazyH Fri 04-Oct-19 10:58:37

NSO - that's something my mother would say.....and has said?

Oldwoman70 Fri 04-Oct-19 11:03:59

Oh yes, the parental put down! I once asked my mother how I looked - her reply "OK but no-one is going to stop a galloping horse to look at you"

Theoddbird Fri 04-Oct-19 11:06:37

Yes I remember those words. I also remember my eldest daughter saying, when I collected her from school aged 10, 'why can't you dress like other mothers'. My dress now...aged 68...very bohemian. My view is that you should develop your own style...

Amagran Fri 04-Oct-19 11:06:42

Andrea Leadsom - nice outfit; pity about the wearer.
Dominic Cummings - poor chap, having to sleep rough. Isn't the tax payer paying him enough to get some decent clothes and a bed for the night? Saving grace? - his bag - looks like he reads books.

Witchypoo Fri 04-Oct-19 11:11:14

Still got my original mini skirt from Chealsea Girl. Viewed against todays mini skirts it is an acceptable length. The skirts today barely cover a bottom. The shorts i have seen this summer, well bum cheeks poking out each step not a pleasant sight to follow. The trend now of everyone wearing leggings no matter what size is a sight i hope will soon be covered by coats. I dont need to see all that shape unless i am married to it. Oh dear definitely a grumpy old woman.

paddyann Fri 04-Oct-19 11:21:47

Never had a problem with my Mother over clothes, when dad would say I would get arrested for indecent exposure in a mini that barely covered my bum,mum would tell him to leave off because" she's be as well dead as out of fashion at 15"
