Matching sets of lingerie

I follow a fashion blog authored by a middle aged woman, and the topic came up regarding a new line of bras that she had heard were comfortable, but she hadn't tried them because they did not offer matching panties. She only wore matching sets.

Not being of the matching set crowd, this made me curious.

What ratio of bras to panties would one purchase? I don't wash my bra with every wear, so one would either need many sets to make it through the week, or purchase 1 bra to every 5 panties. Is this what is done?

What if you are wearing light trousers and a dark top? Do you break rank?

What about cost? I know I pay quite a bit for a nice bra, but the matching panties tend to be extraordinarily expensive.

I have a few favourite bras, and do my best to colour match with my fav cotton undies. You may, however, find me unmatched if I end up hit by a bus and end up in the hospital.

Thoughts?

Blimey, I don't even wear bikini's as matching sets. I tend to buy in the Sales and often buy one half patterned and the other half with one of the colours picked out. Or something with a black background so it matches any of my black other bits. I hasten to add I only wear a bikini in the back garden, I wouldn't offend the rest of the world by wearing it in public.

I always wear black undies with a few nude bits under certain clothing.
I find white undies look scruffy faster, although a friend of mine boils her knickers of cotton airtex every week in an old-fashioned boiler and pegs them on the line with H's vests and pants. I have to admit the whiteness is stunning but I just couldn't be bothered.

Triumph bra for me usual colours, white, black, and skin tone and lots of sloggy pants. The only ones that don't give me a wedgie.

Black 'Doreen' bras and black Sloggi pants. Deeply boring but comfortable.

I just buy everything in black or red so they always match....not that I actually care about the matching, I just like black and red

I have never been a matching set person. Having been a larger lady all my life comfort has always been more important. I tend to wear black bottoms and have 3 colours for bras black, white and neutral which cover all situations

For every day, I buy skin tone bras as they don't show under thin white/light tops. Most of my knickers are black, as I always seemed to wear black or dark trousers to work, but I do have a drawer of 'naughtier' undies in various colours and cuts for my special man to appreciate.

Well this is certainly an eye-opener. Matching undies - usually just be chance; making my own - highly unlikely. Who cares.

When I was younger and slimmer I always wore matching underwear, the first time my now hubby saw them he asked why I was wearing a bikini under my clothes ??
Now seven grandkids later I grab the nearest out of the drawer.

I like cotton knickers and my tummy is too large for skimpy but I do try to buy 3 for 2 offers and go for lace trim or pretty patterns or dots I tend to return to a particular M&S bra I find comfy with lace cups but the colour range is limited alas. In my youth I bought pretty, sexy bras but I had more disposable income too! My mum always preached clean undies in case you were knocked down by a bus (it was always a bus!) confused

I used to always wear matching bra and pants, especially when married to the first husband. He used to buy most of them for me. Well, they lost their magic when I caught him wearing them! YUK!

I now wear the first pair of clean pants and bra that comes out of the drawers, plus I don't have that 36/24/34 figure anymore.

Doesn't matter how many pairs of matching knickers you buy they will never come out of the wash at the same time as the bra. I know this.

I always wear matching sets, only because I buy everything the same. I change my bra twice a week, pants everyday. They are skin coloured so don’t show through anything. Have you noticed only women wearing matching sets get murdered in thrillers!!

Crystaltips

What beautiful underwear you have made! Kudos to you.
I once bought a remnant of green silk and tried to make a pair of knickers but they were so uncomfortable I had to throw them away.
Unfortunately I have never had a matching set of underwear but if I see some in a sale I might buy some, just so I can think I once had some!!

Most of my underwear is pastel - white, beige or whatever. I hate black. Often I match 'like with like.' What I prefer is underwear that is smooth as I don't want visible seams.

Please don't use the word 'panties' as it puts me in mind of Benny Hill's character - was it Fred Scuttlebucket or something? Cringe.

Actually, Maw, I think our aunts didn't allow themselves to even think the word sexy.

My grandmother wore salmon pink corsets and knickers.

I have some matching sets, mainly for DH's delectation although I do like wearing them.

I have always felt they were only for best, as underpants (mine at least) do need more frequent washing then bras.

I have skin tone and black bras and pants (with one white bra that I only ever wash with whites for fear of colour change), though they weren’t bought as matching sets. My best buy a year ago was 6 pairs of very fine skin tone pants from Lidl. Always fit perfectly, no VPL, wash perfectly and dry quickly. 2 snags-I’ve never found them since and they didn’t do bras.

LondonGranny Thu 24-Oct-19 12:27:31

I've never had a matching set other than I usually get black or white underwear because it's easier. My problem with matching sets is they usually are sold in sets and I have much bigger boobs than bum, if you see what I mean.
I do have sort of matching sets in the old comfortable grey big knickers and slightly saggy wire-free bra for pottering round the house & garden but I don't think you meant that sort of matching set.

sarahellenwhitney Thu 24-Oct-19 12:31:55

No one to appreciate sadwhat I wear so it's plain white no frills.

fizzers Thu 24-Oct-19 12:36:24

I don't really bother much with matching underwear these days, but when I was younger and out to 'impress' I used to buy quite a few sexy matching sets of underwear

TrendyNannie6 Thu 24-Oct-19 12:42:23

I buy matching underwear but I will say if I see a nice bra and they don’t have a knickers to match then I will buy a pair in the same colour that coordinates, I love the home made underwear .im quite envious, I buy my underwear from tkmaxx M&S Asda so not that expensive, I have got a lot though. Love to treat myself

Anthea1948 Thu 24-Oct-19 12:42:51

I really don't care about matching undies - as BlueBelle says, life is too short. I grab what I consider the most comfortable of what's in the drawer and just go with that. My bras are all plain - white, black, or skin tone and my knickers are all patterened - and usually come from Asda.

Theoddbird Thu 24-Oct-19 12:46:43

Definitely matching. M&S have knickers 3 for price of two. I would feel 'undressed' if they did not match. Even at home under my baggy cotton dungarees this ancient hippy wears matching underwear.

Legs55 Thu 24-Oct-19 13:08:21

I had lots of matching bras & knickers in my younger, slimmer days, worn for my pleasure rather than the man in my life.

Now I'm a widow I still have some nice underwear which I wear when I go out. I have met a new man who loves me wearing pretty bras, don't think he cares if the knickers matchblush

Saggi Thu 24-Oct-19 13:17:06

When I buy new bra ....I pay a good price for a good fit....I will not buying the matching pants as too expensive for a bit of flimsy. But I will match the colour . So I have about 10 pairs pants for every different colour bra I have. So about 30 pairs in all...white ..black and beige.
