Matching sets of lingerie

I follow a fashion blog authored by a middle aged woman, and the topic came up regarding a new line of bras that she had heard were comfortable, but she hadn't tried them because they did not offer matching panties. She only wore matching sets.

Not being of the matching set crowd, this made me curious.

What ratio of bras to panties would one purchase? I don't wash my bra with every wear, so one would either need many sets to make it through the week, or purchase 1 bra to every 5 panties. Is this what is done?

What if you are wearing light trousers and a dark top? Do you break rank?

What about cost? I know I pay quite a bit for a nice bra, but the matching panties tend to be extraordinarily expensive.

I have a few favourite bras, and do my best to colour match with my fav cotton undies. You may, however, find me unmatched if I end up hit by a bus and end up in the hospital.

Thoughts?

My word, I’m extremely impressed by those of you who make your own knickers, that sounds seriously challenging to me.
Crystaltips, that underwear set is lovely, how talented you are.
I buy much of my underwear from M+S and also the Delimira range from Amazon. I have a few other ‘branded’ sets. I often buy the matching set, and I normally wear a bra and knickers in the same colour, if not always actually matching. However, I do not wear the same colour if the top clothing requires something different ie white trousers need white knickers, whilst a dark top will require a dark bra.
I wear clean knickers every day as do you all, and I wear a bra for two days normally.

I like pretty matching underwear, preferably with floral patterns. Usually buy 2 pairs of pants/knickers (take your pick) to every bra. Bras get washed after 2 days wear.

Matching under wear doesn't usually come as sets, just racks of bras and racks of pants and you choose each size separately so matching underwear is no more expensive than non-matching. I only ever buy supermarket underwear, usually LeClerc, in France, very occasionally a British supermarket.

Fortunately I am modestly endowed so do not need to worry too much about support, just containment.

I wear matching, I had a girlfriend who worked for a lingerie store many years ago and her advice was 2 pairs to every bra.
I feel more put together and confident with matching sets.

I like brightly coloured bras as long as they don't clash with colours of tops or knickers.

I have a couple of matching sets ratio 3 pants to 1 bra.

But my must are 1) be comfortable 2) don't show through top clothes.

I tend to go for the neutral/skin tone colours as I hate to faff but I do have a black set but if I'm not wearing anything special I'm not really fussed about matching.

crstaltipps just want to say WOW on the hand make set.

I have a few sets but tend to opt for comfort everything as 13 weeks pregnant.
There’s nothing remotely sexy about vomiting constantly, for me or him!

I have some matching sets but since discovering the comfort bras that you just pull on I tend to wear them all the time. Does do what I did once, in hurry discovered too late I had it on back to front no wonder I kept falling out hmm

I always wear bras and knickers of the same colour and the same or similar design. I buy from m and s. I don’t need special bras as I’m not well endowed. I’ve always done this but can’t tell you why.
One day my granddaughter aged 10 started peeping under my clothes. When I asked her why she said that mummy said my undies always matched and she wanted to check!

I like matching underwear - mostly white and black. but have some fancy bras and pants - usually bought from M&S

I have Triumph bras in black and white but always wear white cotton knickers. I have slips, because I only wear dresses or skirts, and are black or white to match the bra.
Until I went into the WAAF during the war made my own underwear. Then it was Air Force issue. When my husband was stationed in Palestine in 1945 he sent me lots of pure silk frilly panties which he bought in Damascus. That is what the locals were wearing under their all concealing burkas

My mum made her wedding trousseau underwear from parachute silk smile

I have so many different coloured bras and knickers and do try to wear the same colours together but most of the time I tend to wear black, white or nude. I always find that matching sets have knickers that show a 'VPL so don't normally buy the bottoms. The days of anything remotely sexy are long gone although I've still got my red basque somewhere - it wouldn't fit any part of me now grin

I mainly buy white and black bras and same with pants so they blend not necessarily a complete match . Some days the most extraordinarily mis matches go on with all of us when we are in a hurry ! ?? I’m sure me included x

As I once got 15% for needlework, it's just as well we didn't have to make our own knickers (love the word undercrackers) at school as mine would probably have come apart at a seam on bending over or fallen down while crossing the road. I wouldn't have needed an accident to embarrass myself.

Allsaints55 Thu 24-Oct-19 15:24:50

This has been a great conversation as I walk around thinking all ladies must be wearing beautiful matching undies under their clothes! And it’s just me grovelling in the underwear draw every morning ! I read anthea turner ties her matching knickers to her bras in the draw so she’s always coordinated ??‍♀️

Calendargirl, I found the 'hit by a bus' thing intriguing as a child. It seemed so obvious to me that my underwear would be in a sorry state anyway!

hulahoop Thu 24-Oct-19 16:12:42

Dragonfly do you find choice of post op bra,s limited in most shops eg debenhams when I have asked told not much demand , I'm glad that is so , but it would be nice to have more choice asda are reasonable but they don't often have my size .?

M0nica Thu 24-Oct-19 16:16:09

Willow500 As a small child all my underwear was made from parachute silk. My father was in the army in India (WW2) and had access to surplus and damaged materials, so we got sent all kinds of fabrics, parachute silk and army blankets (made into dressing gowns,or used as blankets) are the two I remember.

I know it's boring but to try to deal with the light/dark top dark/light bottom most of my bras and knickers are skin tone. Do have white and black too but in summer especially its skin tone afraid. 3 pairs knickers to 1 bra usually. Cannot imagine sitting down and making my own undies but never say never!

mcem Thu 24-Oct-19 16:25:07

Always buy 2 pairs of knickers when I buy a new bra.
My undies drawer from left to right has white, black, skintone, cream, taupe, grey, navy, purple plus floral patterned in navy/cream, white/ blue and white/ purple!

Luckygirl Thu 24-Oct-19 16:30:38

Matching sets!!! Wow!

Why? - just why?!!! smile

Luckygirl Thu 24-Oct-19 16:31:31

mcem - I am intrigued by your undies drawer - mine contains a sort of knicker casserole!

newnanny Thu 24-Oct-19 16:32:38

I buy bras in white, black and nude colours and pants in the same colours. They are not matching sets though just plain cotton pants with lace trim. I do have one matching set but tbh I have put on a few pounds and it looks a bit tight.

Norah Thu 24-Oct-19 16:44:20

Matching

M0nica Thu 24-Oct-19 17:01:01

Luckygirl Why not?

I lik pretty underwear. I like knowing that I am wearing it, when I see the pretty patterns and colours in the drawer, they are balm to the mind.

Mrsdof Thu 24-Oct-19 17:36:19

I love wearing matching undies, makes me feel good about myself. I buy 2 pairs of knickers for every bra and love all the bright colours and floral ones. I generally buy them from Bravissimo and usually get them when they have a sale on, so not too expensive.
