Ponytail at my age?

Being very broke at the moment and long overdue a visit to my usual very expensive hair stylist, I am wondering if it’s ever acceptable for someone in their sixties with very fine dark blonde hair to put it in a high ponytail?

I only have mine cut about three times a year. I leave it until it's at the loose ponytail stage which looks OK because I have a feathery cut bob so the sides are always shorter and lend themselves to the 'messy' look.

Another pony tailed person here. My hair is thick and just below my shoulders. I love the versatility, I wear it down, up, half up and however I want on any particular day. I colour it at home because I'm going a little grey now but I have no intention of cutting it just because it is going grey. I so hated it all those years that I had it cut short. Life is too short to worry what others think - let your hair go free OP!

If you are unsure about a high ponytail twist up on top and secure with a scrunchie I do this with my waist length hair I would never dream of paying extortionate rates for a trim I go to the hairdressing college and have a student trim off an inch or two supervised by a qualified tutor every few months.

Sarah I too have a hairdresser who visits me at home. A cut costs £15.

I think a high ponytail would be lovely ... give it a try. You can always take it down/undo it, if you start to feel unsure. ?

Maybe because I'm in London, a trim at home costs £30. I find it easier to keep my hair long enough to tie back.

It's very fine blonde/grey, dead straight and a complete nightmare to curl or style. So, for everyday, it's either loose or in a ponytail. Of course it's 'acceptable'!

Age doesn’t matter. If it looks good and works....do it.

I am 64 with hair down to my waist today I have a ponytail as DH left for work ay 4.30 am usually I wear it in a single plait down my back which my DH does for me.

Yes, of course it's ok. At the age of 62 I have decided to grow my hair as I've never had it longer than shoulder length. Auntie was a hairdresser and as a child it was kept very short. I just need a change and really want to be able to put my hair up, something that I've never done before.

You can wear a ponytail at any age, and I think they look great.
Age shouldn't be a bar to anything. Myy granddaughter put pink streaks in my hair yesterday and I'm 82. I love it!

jaylucy Tue 04-Feb-20 10:05:54

Why not ?
I grew my hair - not particularly because ai wanted to, but because my day off was changed to a Monday and couldn't find a hairdressers that was open !
I bought several pretty clips and either had it in a pony tail or twisted it into a sort of rough french pleat and then clipped it to the back of my head, often pulling a few bits out at the top so it stuck out!
Have fun and experiment - you may like the variety of styles so much that you won't have it cut!
A dry cut is usually half the price of a cut and blow dry or get booked in on a Tuesday or Wednesday when it is often cheaper for seniors!

Now I’m in my mid 60s and retired I often have little wobbles with self confidence about what I’m wearing and even going into certain shops. My daughter is a Life Coach and tells me to walk tall with confidence and people will assume I HAVE confidence. It works for me! Swish that ponytail with pridesmile

Witzend Tue 04-Feb-20 10:11:24

I’m sure it looks fine, OP. In any case if you’re comfortable with it, I wouldn’t bother about what anybody else thinks.

After an exceptionally busy time my hair is well overdue for a cut, so for the moment I’ve got it twisted up at the back and held with one of those ‘claw’ things.

Added dilemma is that at my usual hairdresser, one cutter is good, the other rather hit and miss - they don’t work on the same days - and I’ve forgotten which are the good one’s days! I’m quite friendly with the other so can’t bring myself to phone and tell her I want an appointment with the other!

Shall have to walk past on different days to find out. Luckily it’s a fairly short walk away.

Think a 'scraped back' ponytail would be a bit harsh and aging, go for a softer one and wind hair round for a messy bun.

But how about finding a salon which offers free haircuts to 'models' on training nights?

Phloembundle Tue 04-Feb-20 10:14:19

I would never wear a high ponytail. I wear it low on the nape with a scrunchy or slightly higher doubled up with a clip. I would also never have my hair long if it was grey or white as to me it looks witchy. Grey hair puts 10 years on you, as my oldest friend found out when she let hers grow out. She texted to tell me she was fed up with being treated like a little ,old lady. She is 65. I dye my hair blonde, which I have always been till I started going grey. My mother is 89 and still colours her hair.

Foxygran Tue 04-Feb-20 10:20:25

Go for it and wear it exactly as you want to!

I’d swap to a cheaper hairstylist as well though.

I went to the same stylist for 7 years but decided I needed to swap to a more local, closer one. I know how difficult it is to move and you are worried about upsetting the current stylist that you like.
I’m afraid I was a bit sneaky, and I told her that I was going on holiday for a month and would have to get it cut while I was away. I did go on holiday for a month but booked in locally as soon as I got home.
It just gave me chance to try out someone local and cheaper without offending what was then my current stylist. In fact, I did then go back to my original stylist the next time it needed colouring and cutting because I was unsure but then bit the bullet and changed hairdressers..

I’m very glad I switched, it’s cheaper and she is equally good!

Dillonsgranma Tue 04-Feb-20 10:20:26

I do! I use a banana comb clip and scoop it up high on my head. It’s like an instant facelift ! Fringe and wispy bits round my face to soften the effect ?

Bluebird64 Tue 04-Feb-20 10:27:52

Yes-yes-yes! Of course it is. I'm 64 and have long hair, usually tied back. I love it, even though my husband wants me to cut it, and HATE going to the hairdresser. Apart from the expense (plus tips??) some have been rude to me in the past, have damaged my hair and given me a cut exactly opposite to what I wanted. Enjoy your lovely ponytail!

Riggie Tue 04-Feb-20 10:35:06

Nothing wrong with a pony tail. Mine are usually mod height or low as my hair isnt that long. Sometimes I twist it into a bun or french pleat and secure with a hair stick. (or pencil or knitting needle...but only at home!!)

Aepgirl Tue 04-Feb-20 10:43:06

Go for it. I wish I had the patience to grow my hair long enough to put it in a bun or ponytail.

I’d like to know where silverlining48 can get a home cut for £15!

mothertrucker52 Tue 04-Feb-20 10:45:49

Mommawolf your hair sounds fantastic, I wish mine was that long, it doesn't seem to grow much now (I am 67) and not as thick as it used to be either, sob, sniff!

Saggi Tue 04-Feb-20 10:46:15

I’ve got a mobile hairdresser comes to me and husband once every six weeks and charges £9.00 each. For that my husband gets his hair cut/ beard trim/ eyebrow trim ...She is brilliant . Better than my last ...very expensive cutter....whose premises I felt I was supporting, I am extremely mobile and active myself, and could go to any hairdresser , but after seeing the excellent job she did on others of my acquaintance.... I’m sticking with her. Although IF she suggests I need a beard trim.... I might re-think it! Your hair , your style .... ponytail, plaits, Princess Leia bun, Afro, or mullet. Do as you please.

Kartush Tue 04-Feb-20 11:03:51

I wear my hair in a ponytail all of the time in summer, it’s long and grey. Sometimes I wind it and put a fancy clip in it

GreenGran78 Tue 04-Feb-20 11:07:47

I go to my local hairdresser on pensioners’ day, and ask for a dry cut for my short hair. She asks if I mind if she sprays it with water, cuts my hair, then gives it a quick blow dry. I get the full works for only £12!
I would love to have long hair, but once it gets to a certain length it starts to annoy me. I can wash it, comb it through, give it a fluff with my fingers as it drys naturally, and am good to go in 15 minutes!
If I had long hair I would certainly be happy to wear it in a ponytail, and I’m 80!

CarlyD7 Tue 04-Feb-20 11:12:16

I have mine cut short - but it's far too expensive and, like you, am looking for another option. A neighbour of ours does have longer grey hair and wears hers in a lovely French pleat (haven't seen one of those for years, but it's really elegant). Lots of videos on YouTube for how to do it (considering it myself !)

Summerlove Tue 04-Feb-20 11:17:09

Ponytails are always acceptable
