Anyone still going to hairdresser?

I cancelled my appointment because I'm afraid of putting my head back to be washed giving the opportunity for germs to go onto my face from hairdresser above me. My area of the UK has a low incidence of C19 and I am fit and well albeit self distancing and staying at home unless absolutely necessary to venture out. Have other Grans been keeping hair appts? My hair is driving me mad and long overdue for a cut and blow so I would welcome yr kind thoughts or experiences?

Hair things arrived just now, nice stretch boho bands and a pack of assorted clips, pretty ones and one more thing ordered, things that stretch and tie. I can just see the panic buying and inflated prices in a few weeks.

I did ring my hairdresser last week to say I was cancelling, she persuaded me not to, All clean there she said, sanitiser etc. I wanted to continue to cancel but it was a difficult call, she is upgrading her solo business and obviously money will be tight for her. I said to keep it open.

I am going to bite the bullet on monday. Its hellish for those who have suddenly had the financial rug pulled away

what are you having done Craftyone ? if it’s just a quick wash and blow dry make sure that you both wear gloves and she should really cover her mouth and nose, if it’s for a longer appointment then you should cancel, it won’t do her business any good if you catch the virus from her.

craftyone Sat 21-Mar-20 17:43:25

no I am not going, it would be stupid, hence the bands and clips. Biting the bullet means telling her and listening to the sob in her voice

Why do you despair artdecogran the hairdresser drove to my very very clean house. We are both healthy, not in any vunerable groups, her equipment is sterized, we both washed our hands. I washed and blow dried my own hair.
The hairdresser is self employed and the money will help towards her living expenses and rent.

I have been on utube. Followed the instructions carefully. I will be wearing a hat for the duration if in the garden. ?

craftyone you could pay for the booked appointment, but not go. Reassure her of your custom in the future. I hope she receives all the help promised by the government.

Oh for goodness sake, someone can be infected without symptoms and without knowing it.

rafichagran Sat 21-Mar-20 18:42:21

Like I said she came to my house and precautions were taken. I am a key worker, will go to work Monday and will have to take my chances as the people I communicate with are vunerable.
Every precaution was taken today in my very sanitized home. Neither of us are in the vunerable groups, no cough, temperature, or respiratory problems .

Some of you are lucky enough to be able to stay at home, I do not have that luxury.

rafichagran Sat 21-Mar-20 18:42:56

Sorry do not know what happened there.

rafichagran Sat 21-Mar-20 18:45:17

Feeling my aged please read my thread, she came to me. Sorry but as a key worker, I cannot afford to pay for things not done and she would not expect me too.

rafichagran Sat 21-Mar-20 18:49:56

Sorry craftyone I see you were speaking to another poster. My mistake.

WOODMOUSE49 Sat 21-Mar-20 18:57:56

For me, I see it as an unessential journey. Stay at Home - Stay safe.

i have short hair but grows fast and thick i get a DRY CUT every 4 weeks in and out of salon, so no need to have it washed . mybe phone ahead see how many are in at same time as you. my salon is small

GagaJo Sat 21-Mar-20 19:06:29

No! We are self isolating and there is no one older than 55 in the house. It is getting dangerous out there. No shopping trips. No hairdresser. No answering the door no matter WHO is at it. No anything.

craftyone Sat 21-Mar-20 19:16:04

I am definitely not going, not going to be asking for a dry cut or anything, I am staying here, staying safe. Enjoying fab conversations with my AC, who have turned this crisis into something very positive. Why would I ever want to risk that special link, all for a haircut. However I have ordered a bit more shampoo

Busy bee

Time needed to infect you 1 second
People needed to infect you 1

People you could infect afterwards ?.?

This is how it spreads

Hospital bed needed for you 1
Hospital staff working round the clock because you wanted your hair cut ?
Others who don’t get the treatment they need because you and the people you infected are taking up the resources

Well who knows. Who cares. As long as it’s not you......and your hair looks nice.

And when you think of the criticism aimed at youngsters on GN - you can tell where they must have learned it from

I really do not think that those of us who are supposed to be socially isolating should even think about going to the hairdresser. It is the very opposite of what social isolation is about.

You can gel your hands to your heart's content; but another person, who may be incubating the virus, breathing all over you (and you over him/her) is just what spreads the virus.

Please do not go to the hairdresser - untidy hair vs pandemic spread - really it is simply no contest.

Treebee Sat 21-Mar-20 19:39:01

The salon has cancelled my appointment which was for next Tuesday and rescheduled for after Easter. Makes sense. I’ll have to look out my hair clips or I won’t be able to see!

Luckygirl Sat 21-Mar-20 19:42:13

After Easter is what I call optimistic in the extreme!!!!

grannyqueenie Sat 21-Mar-20 19:53:02

Resigned to cancelling my next air appointment, at least I won’t really be seeing anyone I know. If I’m tempted to take the scissors to it I’ll get out the photos of the children when they were small, I wasn’t any good at diy haircuts then! Funnily enough there is someone who looks just like that in the right hand top corner of my face time screen too merlot

WishIwasyounger Sat 21-Mar-20 20:19:25

I love going to my hairdresser, but reluctantly I've cancelled my appointments and decided to grow my hair longer. I used to have longer hair years ago, but had it cut shorter to please my ex. Thinking back I can''t understand why I pandered to his likes and dislikes, but that's another story.

welbeck Sat 21-Mar-20 20:31:55

someone on MN suggested we all sport a boris special hair style, ie nip at it occasionally with nail scissors, during this crisis, as a kind of badge of honour, of commitment to getting our priorities right.
its a thought.
for those who think they have to go for wash etc, could you sit the other way round at the basin, ie face down rather than up.
but really, safer not to go at all. hairdryers create aerosol effect, perfect for spraying virus around, from asymptomatic carrier such as hairdresser who meets so many people.

Gwenisgreat1 Sat 21-Mar-20 20:41:18

I did have appointment last week, but chickened out, 'cause she would not be able to do much without coming close - by the time we can safely go out again, I'll probably resemble a grey haired cave woman!! But who but DH is going to see it? And who knows, I might like it!

welbeck Sat 21-Mar-20 20:56:48

i am rather shocked by rafi, who says she is still going to work, and works with vulnerable people.
so that is a risk to others who have no say in it.
most of us are already self-isolating.
you seem to glide over the risk of catching and passing on the virus unseen, ie from someone exhibiting no symptoms.
how do you know your ever-so-clean hairdresser was not incubating it, and that you in your ever-so clean house did not pick it up, to pass on to the vulnerable people you are still working with.
