Legs in summer!

I have nicely shaped legs but the skin is awful - milk bottle white and covered in veins, bruises and various markings! It’s fine in winter, I wear opaque tights and dresses but I think dresses/skirts are out of the question in summer with bare legs. I’m thinking wide linen trousers and cigarette/cropped trousers. I’m also top heavy though slim and would welcome advice on tops to go with wide-legged trousers - thinking they need to be fitted as baggy ones just hang off me like a tent.

I've gone straight from tights with shorter dresses into maxi dresses to hide my legs. It also avoids the need for me to wax or shave them!

Sad we have to hide our legs!

American tan tights in the late 60’s/early 70’s were a boon in some ways.

I sometimes wear cropped leggings with my summer dresses. I’m not embarrassed to bare my legs though. If people don’t like them they can always look away ?

Wrap tops look nice with wide legged pants and generous frontage.

I wear cropped trousers/chinos/linen below knee all summer long. Middi skirts if going out, or wide legged linen trousers if it's a tad cool for the beer garden evening.
My legs are scarred from tomboy childhood mishaps & old age creeping on. I moisturise every single day to keep my leg skin healthy and hydrated.
I would never wear shorts but I don't give two hoots about my less than perfect legs. They've done me proud & as my mum would wryly say "Who's goina stop their horse and cart to look at you?".

I wear lovely floaty midi and maxi (ankle length) skirts all Summer with t-shirts and denim jacket. I find it difficult to find trousers that fit.

The white legs and veins I take care of with some self tan - the ones that moisturize and build up a tan over time. Just started using that so in about a month legs will be nice and smooth with a bit of tan and most marks not so obvious.

Which tan Amberone please, I’ve been thinking about that, thanks.

Amberone Fri 02-Apr-21 17:07:02

Jaxjacky I use Dove 'Summer revived' fair to medium - it's in a goldy coloured tube. I bought this last year so hopefully it will still work ? I've tried a couple of different ones - some smell a bit disgusting, some are a bit orange looking. Although that might be because my legs are so white ?

Let it dry well before dressing in anything white. I just bung it on every couple of days after a shower - you don't get patches like with tanning lotion because it builds up so gradually. I also use gloves to put it on so my hands don't tan along with my legs.

I read this thread with envy, because I routinely wear compression knee-length socks to counteract the tendency of my lower legs and ankles to swell, and orthotic inserts in lace-up shoes to keep things aligned so that I don't get 'sciatica'. I look normal for most of the year - but bare legs and sandals hardly ever happen! Still, I'm grateful to be able to walk considerable distances and to do the garden. Changing into garden togs right now...

I like Dove too

Jaxjacky Fri 02-Apr-21 17:27:22

Thank you Amberone I’ll give this a go after I’ve deforested!

I don’t wear dresses anyway. I have several pairs of full length, linen or cotton/linen, fairly wide leg trousers that I wear all summer.

The tops I like to go with them - not too long or baggy and not sleeveless or with very short sleeves - are quite easy to find. I’ve got several (pure cotton) from Seasalt.

Where do you buy your maxi skirts/dresses please? I remember them from the 70s and love them!

Redhead56 Fri 02-Apr-21 18:28:19

Every year T J Hughes sell strappy maxi dresses lovely for the summer and any age.

Redhead56 Fri 02-Apr-21 18:29:25

T K Max sell maxi dresses .

Amberone Fri 02-Apr-21 18:41:16

I think most places do maxi dresses and skirts these days - do a google search for 'maxi dress UK' and you'll get loads from cheap to expensive. Most have short sleeves or small straps but if I like the dress I just wear a small jacket or cardi or pashmina over the top depending on where I am going. I usually get a skirt though, I find it difficult to get dresses that fit comfortably. They are actually cooler than wearing trousers, I think, when it's really hot.

Amberone Like the sound of Dove 'Summer Revived'... sounds just what I need for my blotchy, veiny pins!

(Sorry, but I couldn't help wondering if your username was inspired by the colour of your legs grin )

I use this too. It’s quite inexpensive from B & M.

MaggieTulliver, I think we are leg twins! Mine are like upturned milk bottles with a various odd markings,
I have something called airbrush legs (No, not hairbrush legs) which does give a nice colour but it does tend to rub off a bit. I find the lotions which are meant to give a gradual tan tends to collect in my pores and makes my legs look quite speckly.
I mind much less than I used to.

growstuff Fri 02-Apr-21 20:43:57

I'm almost 6' so maxi dresses and trousers are almost always a bit too short and I don't like cropped trousers. I find summer quite problematic. Winter is fine because I wear skirts with thick tights or jeggings or very thick leggings with tunics and ankle boots.

In summer I tend to wear below length skirts and use fake tan on the bits of my legs still showing. I've tried wide trousers but never really find the right shape for the top.

Nanna58 Fri 02-Apr-21 20:48:05

Wide leg linen trousers with slightly more fitted tops, legs never going to show if I have my way !!

??? JoyBloggs I wish my legs were a nice amber colour ? more like the milk bottles another poster has

grandmajet I've used Airbrush too - it's really good for covering marks on your legs if you don't want to wear tights with a shorter skirt. Trouble is it washes off and you have to keep reapplying it.

I exfoliate my legs once a week in the shower with those nylon glove things (no idea what they are called!) and some shower gel to get rid of dry skin and excess Dove. Stops it going patchy. Might keep pores clear too.

Returnofthemc Fri 02-Apr-21 20:58:07

I also use Dove, have done for years
I use it on my arms, legs and chest area, from about now, until the weather starts to cool down again
I am petite and find that most midi dresses are almost maxi on me, if they're midi on a five foot ten model, then that's another eight inches of length for me

Jaxjacky Fri 02-Apr-21 21:00:26

You didn’t mention ‘exfoliating’ Amberone I’d better go and look this up and nylon glove things....
