Tights, forgotten how uncomfortable they are!

I have just come back from a funeral. This has meant for the first time in years I have worn a dress and the dreaded tights. I had forgotten how uncomfortable they are! I am rather overweight ( size 16 / 18). I never know whether to go for pull everything in ones, or let it all hang loose ones. Then they roll over at the top and slide down at the crotch. Pulling them up is undignified and usually means I stick my finger through them. I am at a wedding on Saturday so have to go through the whole tight wearing scenario again! Any hints or advice anyone? I even contemplated wearing knickers over my tights!! Thank you. Xx

I would recommend Snag tights. Made for the larger lady. They are amazing. Bit more expensive but worth every penny. Also chubby rub shorts under a dress with bare legs .

I've seen a lot of ads for Snag tights (they do a few leggings too, and the anti-rub shorts) and they look great.

Another vote for Snag tights, they fit all sizes.

SNAG tights, yes. You give them your height and dress size... they send you soft, comfy tights that fit and feel lush. Quite expensive but never put my fingers through them yet.
Have a lovely time at the wedding! x

I am glad I shall never have to wear tights again. On formal occasions I am sure I can get round it with one of the above mentioned solutions. In fact I was just thinking the other day that the few pairs of tights I have left in my drawer will be very useful for cutting up and tying all those shoes together that I really must also get rid of. I thought I could perhaps tie the toes together, drop a shoe into each leg, and tie another knot and cut off above that. Hey presto, shoes firmly attached to each other and protected from scratches to boot! (Pardon the pun.)

Hold ups every time for me too. I also use a bit of StaysPut (Irish dancers sock glue) to be confident they won't fall down. You can then position the top anywhere on the thigh that's comfortable. I guess it would work with stockings without suspenders too, as the glue does a great job of keeping them in place. No Nora Batty moments!

I wear dresses and skirts all the time, if it’s a maxi I don’t bother with tights, but for knee length or midi dresses I do.

I am a size 10 and 5/7 so not overly tall or big but I always wear large or ex large. I pull them right up to my boobs to get a smooth line. I buy no snag, sheer, satin sheen, tights in flesh colour with lycra for the summer and thicker black lycra tighs for the winter. Lycra makes them hold their shape and fit better. I get them in New Look, Superdrug or John Lewis.

Tights - love them or hate them. I haven't worn them for years but I do remember the excitement of wearing tights when they first came out. Simple, smooth and sophisticated after years of wearing suspender belt and stockings.

? Snag tights. I'm short & wide & all my adult life have hated wearing tights as the crutch is always baggy, ankles wrinkly & tight across thighs & tum. Found snag Tights & would never wear anything else. They cater for all sizes & heights & have an array of fab colours. They also do chub rub shorts for the summer which are a life saver!

Wear pants over your tights!

babzi Sun 01-Aug-21 12:55:24

Never wear tights as I have much the same problem. In cold weather I wear leggings under skirts and dresses disguised with ankle boots so they look like thick tights. In summer I just don't wear anything. If I was going to a special do I would consider M & S tights. They are good quality and have a range of sizes

Why bother with tights ? what's wrong with stockings?
I gave up years ago on sweat inducing tights and the need to pull down not just my knicks but the dreaded tights. not good when 'urgency 'is getting the better of me.
Gossard on line have suspender belts and matching accessories I still wear them wink isn't age but a number. ?

I concur…Snag Tights are a total game changer…and their Chub Rub shorts are brilliant if you want to wear a dress without tights but don’t want your thighs to rub together.

Im sorry but why do you have to wear tights at all, is there a rule somewhere that says you cant go out without them? I have never worn stockings pantyhose or tights and the world hasnt ended. Go bare legged….becdaring ?

Madwoman11 Sun 01-Aug-21 13:06:13

Get them plenty big enough and wear a panty girdle/magic knickers over the top and they won't go anywhere.
I like my tights to sit right under my bra.

Sadly we don’t all have beautiful unblemished legs ?

Another vote for Snag tights here, on the very odd occasion that I have to wear them. I was at a wedding last saturday, and as the dress I was wearing below the knee, and summer weight fabric I went with bare legs and used a product by this works to give my legs a light sheen. I spent the money I would have spent on expensive tights on having a nice pedicure and wore wedge sandals. Nearly all of the female guests had done the same.

ss1024 Sun 01-Aug-21 13:14:24

How about the using lotion that tans your legs or spray on leg tanner. I did that recently for a wedding.

TillyWhiz Sun 01-Aug-21 13:35:54

Look for Silkies online. They are an excellent fit, very comfortable and they do a cool summer version.

Kryptonite Sun 01-Aug-21 13:43:18

Wear trousers and pop socks!

lizzypopbottle Sun 01-Aug-21 13:46:13

I'm a size 10/12 but I still find tights to be horribly uncomfortable with that nasty seam cutting you in half from front to back. They must've been designed by a man! Wearing pants over the tights wouldn't help with that! Lizbethann55 I'd look for tights with a gusset. Is that a Les Dawson style, vaguely rude word? ??? My grown-up sons howl laughing if I mention that word!

I was going to post a few links but there are so many results for a Google search for plus size tights uk that you might as well just type that into the search yourself. Good luck!

clbm48 Sun 01-Aug-21 13:57:38

I do agree with everyone suggesting Snag tights! Just Google them. Made especially for larger and or non standard sized people. They're ace

GrauntyHelen Sun 01-Aug-21 14:06:34

I know that pain I've always worn pants on top to help keep them up BUT I have discovered a fabulous Scottish company called Snag their tights are amazing a wee bit more expensive but just fit and wear really well Worth the money

effalump Sun 01-Aug-21 14:12:29

How about stockings? Or perhaps use some of that self-tan cream and go bare legged. Or a long skirt. Definitely go for the comfort angle.

biglouis Sun 01-Aug-21 14:15:05

Stockings were even more uncomfortable and I always hated them.

Back in the 1960s when tights had just come in I had to travel by air wearing stockings. My sister had stolen and holed my last pair of tights. It was a most uncomfortable flight.

I battered my sister with a wooden hair brush for her pains so I got my own back.

Nowadays I wear very long loose kaftan style dresses or trousers so I can get away with pop socks or knee highs. I dont even possess any tights.

Even bare legged there is the problem as to what to put on your feet. I cannot wear shoes without socks and the small ones which do not show do not stay on but come off the heel within two steps. what do others do about that?
