Do you care? Too much ? Too little ?

I know this is controversial but I’m always surprised when people say they don’t care what they look like. I’m not obsessive by any means but I do care what I wear - not for others, just for myself.

I definitely care and although I have an outdoor life style I have my "outdoor" wardrobe that suits me. Riding breeches or slim jeans and a smart polo shirt for riding and dog walking, leggings and boots for gardening. I only wear colours that suit me, generally wear skinny or slim trousers + a pretty top for going out with decent flats or statement trainers and if I really want to dress up, I'm happy to go for it with heels and a short skirt. I always wear some make up and ear rings, for special occasions I love to do the full works and wear more make up and nice jewelry. I'm in my 70's and I'm probably more confident about my looks now than when I was in my 20's. I am blessed with pretty OK looks and for years I never realised it. Wish I had, I quite like myself now but perhaps the benefit of getting old!

Bridie22 Thu 26-Aug-21 18:16:56

I'm clean, comfy and practical person.

Greciangirl Thu 26-Aug-21 17:17:39

I care about what i look like when I go out.

When at home, I dress like a comfortable slob.

No one sees me, except OH and he is the same.

Well said ???

I have always cared how I look, I am 81yrs old and still have my hair cut stylish, I always wear a little make up, and choose my clothes with care to look modern, but not silly. I get compliments even when shopping in the supermarket. The nurse at my doctors surgery was amazed at my age and both nurses loved my casual summer colour co-ordination. They said how some women in there 50s come into the surgery and look 80, simply because they dont care what they look like. This is surely lack of self respect, and self loath. Keeping up your own appearance does wonders for feeling good and being happy about yourself. Which then encourages people to warm to you. Its all psychological, which is what humans are all about.

Yes, I care. Since the latter part of Lockdown, I have started wearing my "good" clothes, as I have nowhere to go, and it seemed a shame not to wear them. I cover up with a chef style striped apron if I have to do anything potentially messy (e.g. frying) but otherwise do what I would normally do in my clothes, including strimming the grass! I don't wear any full length dresses for this, though (I think I own 2)!

I have never worn much make up - again, always used this only when "going out".
I get my hair cut fairly regularly. I can't grown my nails, but try to keep them tidy.

I rather hope that the other ladies who shop in Lidl think that I'm a bit "posh" (I'm really not!).

I do like to know what I look like. I often look at fashion for the over 60s.

GagaJo Thu 26-Aug-21 15:52:38

My mum was always very vain, obsessed with her appearance. That rubbed off on me, but with the opposite effect. I found her vanity so off putting that I feel the reverse now.

The vanity wasn't good for her, in the long run. She now HATES the way she looks because she's less feminine now she's older and not attractive anymore. At least I'll be spared that. If you don't care, ageing isn't such an issue.

Sadgrandma Thu 26-Aug-21 14:56:15

I still care what I look like even at 75, for my own sense of pride. I am often surprised at how some people dress when appearing on television such as quiz shows. If it were me I would have been to the hairdressers and worried for ages about what to wear but some people just don't seem to care. We're all different I suppose.

I do care in that I take time when I dress each morning to choose things that match, feel comfortable, are flattering and appropriate to what I will be doing.
I don't care in that (a) I don't choose the latest fashions when buying new clothes and (b) I don't pay attention to what other people think of my choices
My husband says that my motto is be "never knowingly underdressed".

Could have written this myself exactly the M.O. ! I also dress in 'themes' now I'm not working , like to dress all in one colour down to jewelry and shoes, or in a 'mod' theme now I have painfully short hair! Or as a bag lady if I'm staying in garden ha! Having spent all working life "suited and booted" good clothes practices stay with me and I love it!

I care. I have two conditions which affect my weight; one of which, lipodoema, means my lower half is much larger than my upper body and will not change however much l diet or excercise. My top half is a size 12 and my bottom half a size 16. I cannot do casual - smart casual is as far as I go. I like Seasalt and Joe Browns. I quite often wear a knee length dress over leggings or footless tights.

I care up to a point. I change from house trousers to decent ones every time I go out. If I’m going to meet people, I’m reasonably colour coordinated, including jewellery ( subtle beads or pendants with matching ear rings. At a recent hospital appointment the doctor asked the consultant to come through, and after she had questioned me, and consulted with the doctor, her parting shot was, “ I must compliment you on your jewellery “. It shows that some people do notice the little touches.

I have a hair dye story, Riggie.

I dyed my hair red for about 30 years. Once after it was freshly dyed, I went to the gym. Rigorous workout, as you do. Broke a sweat as usual, which I mopped on the hand towel I take with me.

It was only when I got back to the changing room that I realized I had ginger sweat trails down my face and neck.

timetogo2016 Thu 26-Aug-21 14:01:43

I would say somewhere inbetween.
As long as i am clean and tidy that`s fine by me.
However, when igo out for an occasion i try a little harder.
I have yet to have a sarccy comment.

nipsmum Thu 26-Aug-21 13:55:01

I make sure I'm clean and tidy. I don't care what people think. I am never going to be the height of fashion but I wear what I feel suits me.

grandtanteJE65 Thu 26-Aug-21 13:52:39

I stopped following fashion, which I had never been fanatical about, in my mid-forties.

I still prefer to feel that I am dressed in something that suits me, but as old age is definitely here, I don't really enjoy looking at myself any more.

Kim19 Thu 26-Aug-21 13:41:08

Travelsafar, no one is 'out of your league' so please don't think that. I' sure your friend would be horrified at the very idea. Eviebeanz pretty much nails it for me in everything she says. I need to walk past the mirror with total approval by way of a wink and a nod That's from me and nobody else. Love colour co-ordination and classic styles. Can't think when I last bought a single item. Still love all the old stuff that fills my wardrobe. Can't get out of bed until I've decided what I'm going to wear and then it's shower and all systems go. Love it.

Mollygo Thu 26-Aug-21 13:27:19

Riggie I suffered the same as you did with leaking hair colour, so I’m careful what I wear to have my hair done.
Beth20, even when I feel I look good, the camera doesn’t always reflect that, but since I’ve invested in what my DGC call my ‘human fly’ sunglasses I’m more willing to join pics.

I don't care what other people think I look like....I do care what I think I look like.

Sums up how I feel absolutely, thank you. Though I do run a mile from a camera!

I was once sitting in the waiting area at the hairdresser. I was quietly admiring the woman seated next to me. Her clothes were obviously expensive, she was elegant, just so beautifully turned out. As I was thinking this, she turned to me and said, 'I feel such a mess. I only wear these old clothes to come to the hairdresser.' I was speechless.

Heck! I always wear scruffs to the hairdressers!!

For a reason. Back when I was a teen, I had to go to a hairdresser for a practice bridesmaid's hairdo. I was nicely dressed. The stylist was using setting lotion and I felt it trickle right down my back. When my dress was washed, where the lotion had been the dress fabric was bleached out. Never worn good clothes to have my hair done since

Riggie Thu 26-Aug-21 12:49:49

I am a mostly a stay at home carer for an adult DC so I have a load of ancient clothes that are "OK for round the house". I an also of an age where my look for years has been (ageing) hippy/boho so I don't really do conventionally "smart". .

HannahLoisLuke Thu 26-Aug-21 12:49:14

I care. I apply makeup every day, even just to do the gardening. Not loads, justfoundation, blusher, lipstick and mascara.
I mainly wear jeans and either a long sleeved tee shirt or sweatshirt but obviously something a bit dressier for going out.
I get my hair trimmed regularly and highlighted every few m9nths. I don’t wear nail varnish on my fingernails and keep my nails short. I do paint my toenails a very bright crimson in the summer.
That’s about it.

pen50 Thu 26-Aug-21 12:41:54

I'm rather lazy and tend to wear pull over jersey dresses (easier over my post-lockdown bulges) in bright prints. I visit a nail bar once a fortnight - acrylics and gel because my natural ones peel, split and break as soon as they are a millimetre long. I wear a couple of cheap rings and, occasionally, earrings, now that I don't have to don a mask so frequently. Sometimes I put on makeup but it depends on how much time I have in the morning - I'm often late and in a rush, in which case I go barefaced. Sometimes I don't even brush my hair, just stick it all into a bushy ponytail.

My partner praises me for always looking elegant! Hah!

dragonfly46 Thu 26-Aug-21 12:20:23

I care to some extent. I like to feel comfortable so do not slavishly follow fashion but I like to also feel good - like I have made an effort.
I usually put makeup on because if I don't and catch myself in the mirror I look like my mother - when she was 100!!

I dont care obsessively, two showers a day, moisturiser, lipstick and ironed clothes that l feel I look good in. After that I dont give it a thought.
I dont like it when people say they dont care what they look like, I know someone who said this and I am afraid he did smell. He admitted he was lazy, but unfortunately this had an affect on other people as it was not pleasant.

Two showers a day seems like caring obsessively to me!
