Urmstongran

Sadly 1,600 jobs at risk as Next pulled out of negotiations.

And that’s the crux of the matter. 1600 people face losing their jobs just before Christmas. Very sad indeed.

It is Maggie. But the writing has been on the wall for Joules for ages.

OnwardandUpward Mon 14-Nov-22 18:01:29

It is very sad about the people who will be losing their jobs. I don't really believe that they can't find the staff as it's being said on Mumsnet. Many shops say that and have closed because of it, but there are always people looking for work. I can think of a few (local ones) that said they closed because they couldn't get the staff but didn't advertise.

I think there has to be a bigger reason. Like perhaps import costs are rising.

I’ve got a very nice Joules raincoat but first M&S and now Sainsbury’s do a copy which look equally as nice. I hate three quarter sleeves and so much Joules stuff is 3/4 sleeve so I don’t buy them. Every season it’s the same outfits in a slightly different fabric and I think they’re overpriced for what they are.

One of our local shops, a pity Joules Yard is shut as well.
I agree stuck in a rut, some products not so well made and they’ve obviously over invested in their new headquarters, Joules Barn.
They’re having massive sell offs, including one at Leicester race course.

When is the sell off J52 ? Might have to take a trip .

It’s 22nd of November, you have to buy a ticket which I be,I eve is refunded on a purchase. I think you get the tickets on line.

Well I’m sorry! The Harbour tops have become a cliche but the quality of the cotton is way better than most others.
I also like their knitwear , their raincoats and their kids wear. I have just ordered a lovely needlecord tiered dress for 8 year old DGD for Christmas (And a drastically reduced raincoat for me!)

M0nica Mon 14-Nov-22 18:30:26

Joseanne that is just the point, the French do not wear striped tops, only English tourists wear them because they think they will be able pass as French people.

Striped tops were originally work clothes worn by Breton fishermen.

henetha Mon 14-Nov-22 18:38:14

I like some of joules clothes but they are a little pricey in my opinion. However I hope they recover for the sake of the staff.

Sorry, Monica, it was a bit of a joke. Like half of Germany wear Lederhosen or lots of Scottish people wear kilts!

Oh we miss Joules Yard, used to go for Sunday Lunch and music.

A bit selfish, but will go in next week and see if I can buy a couple of bargains.

Oh, you’re visiting the UK at the moment then?
Good opportunity to stock up!

M0nica Mon 14-Nov-22 18:50:41

Ah, I understand.

Although having lived in Brittany for many years I know that French do buy striped tops, especially in Summer. Look at the number of branches of just one such shop mainly coastal I admit, but not all touristy.
Maybe that's why I like them.

Ninanana Mon 14-Nov-22 19:27:32

Not surprised. They are frumpy and overpriced.

Agreed, they do. Striped tops are still very popular, and not just by the seaside.

OnwardandUpward Mon 14-Nov-22 19:35:01

I do like stripes- and I like flowers, but separately rather than the Joules stripe and flower combo that guarantees you'll match every other woman.

I don't think stripes will ever lose popularity, but they don't have to be navy and white. I suppose there is a safety in wearing a kind of Mum uniform, though.

Passthechocolates Mon 14-Nov-22 19:41:50

Love Joules and have loads of stripey/flowery T shirts I think they look great … each to there own I suppose.

Passthechocolates Mon 14-Nov-22 19:44:05

Or should I say ‘their own’ in case anyone notices grin

lixy Mon 14-Nov-22 19:44:53

Very sad about this - they have been great for children's clothes.
I have a couple of stripy tops that have been going for a few years now, and I shall miss their 3/4 sleeves as I find those practical.

mumski Mon 14-Nov-22 20:17:31

Thank you J52. I shall try and track a ticket down.

SachaMac Mon 14-Nov-22 22:21:57

I have a couple of really nice Joules coats and love their leather boots but I’ve been disappointed with a couple of dresses that shrunk rather a lot in the first wash. I noticed when reading reviews that there are quite a few complaints about quality now.

NotSpaghetti Mon 14-Nov-22 22:41:24

Apologies Urmstongran I see this isn't happening after all.

BigBertha1 Mon 14-Nov-22 22:43:08

Haven't bought anything there in years just a sucsession of stripey tops. Definitely stuck in a rut.

Pittcity Tue 15-Nov-22 09:00:16

I've got my trusty mid season mac and a hoody that I bought in TK Maxx. Otherwise I prefer Seasalt.

Yes they do! It’s a staple in the summer.
I’m still wearing my striped top bought in the 70s in Brittany.

hollysteers Tue 15-Nov-22 10:20:11

Yes to striped tops👍
