Wedding outfits

For DDs wedding I wore a matching dress and coat with hat. I still love the shoes and handbag I wore. For DS’s I wore a flowered silk dress with bolero jacket, which I took off as it was so hot. I have worn the dress a huge amount since then. No hat, matching shoes and bag.

Recent wedding - nephew’s marriage, I wore a pink linen Shift dress and flowered matching jacket, nude shoes and cerise clutch. No hat - and evening ceilidh I wore white trousers and blue silk long sleeved loose top.

I love weddings and dressing up.

PS DH wore morning suit to DDs wedding, and suit to DSs wedding (much less formal).

I don't intend to wear a jacket, as my daughter's wedding will be all indoors. I won't wear a hat either, as I don't like them.

It's going to be a high tea, so I'll look for a really nice summer dress, which will have to have longish sleeves. For once, I'll go to a real shop and try on some dresses. I'll know what looks good when I see it. My problem is that I'm very tall, so lengths can often look strange and the waist is often in the wrong place with fitted clothes. I can't wear heels either, so I'm going to have to look out for some special flat shoes.

They've already had their Nikah, which was very low key. They don't want it to be much swankier, although the civil ceremony is necessary for legal reasons.

Dresses cut on the bias would be good. Flat shoes with midi dresses seem very fashionable at the moment.

The dress I wore to my sons wedding was cut on the bias, and incredibly easy to wear, not fitted and so comfortable.

I agree with you WW. I love dresses cut on the bias. They don't have fixed waistlines, which suits me. They don't make me look like a beanpole either. I've spotted a couple in John Lewis, but I need to try them on.

Calendargirl I had what I thought was the most simple shift and jacket for my DS's wedding France as I knew they didn't dress up as much and apart from still feeling overdressed they insisted I came with a hat, which soon came off1

When my son got married to a Canadian (in Canada) I found a stylish dress in Liberty cotton from Bombshell which was expertly cut, in cotton as I knew the weather would be hot. I wore a subdued fascinator. As we left the hotel the staff gathered round; they told me that they loved seeing the outfits English wedding guests wore. When We arrived at church the only women wearing hats besides me were my English friend and the mother of the bride. I felt rather over dressed I must say as at the reception ( outside) some men wore shorts and the women were in simple shift type dresses. I took off my headgear and changed my high heels for sandals.

I agree. My (late) mother wore a (too) long purple lace dress which she loved. She also had a huge lilac hat which ended up having its own Facebook page because everyone posed in it. She had a lovely day and I smile every time I see her in my wedding photos.

3 of ours were married within a few years but I felt i needed a different outfit each time due to the photos! . A shame because I looked ok in the first 2 but awful in the most recent. I gave my MOB dress to charity shortly after
It was hot and uncomfortable.
Always go for comfort. If you feel nice you will look good.

The men wore kilts. So much easier for them.

I bought a cerise silk mini dress with feathery looking strands, pink and black pony skin heels and a light pink silk blazer all from eBay. Total cost about £45. My daughter loved it. Her MIL wore something she said 'looked alright for a casual lunch'. Glad I made the effort. No hat but cool shades.

Changing the subject slightly but 2 weddings I attended recently the mothers of the brides both wore WHITE!!! I was always told the only person (as a matter of good taste) to wear white was the bride .Am I being too old fashioned?

I've a pretty, classic, silk, tailored, below the knee, elbow length sleeve, aqua column dress that I wear to all weddings. Have for as long as I can remember.

I bought a wonderful cerise dress for my son's wedding, very fancy, more like a cocktail frock. It was expensive and was altered to fit perfectly and finish just on the knee. I felt wonderful in it but sadly the wedding was called off less than a month beforehand.
I'm so sad that I never got to wear it - perhaps I should be buried in it?!

When DD1 got married in Mauritius 10 years ago she asked us all to dress in blue. I got a pretty silky summer dress and silver shoes, no need for hat or bag as it was all in villa we were staying at! DD2 is getting married in a Barn in Cornwall in December so different approach needed! Have been told about a couple of MOB shops I should go to but that really is not my style, just can't imagine a 'dress and jacket' combo, but not sure what else to go for - small grandchildren involved so the plain silk I envisage may not be practical.....any suggestions welcomed!

I live very close to the International Wedding Hotel winner, again. Some of the pictures from weddings held there show the wedding parties in outfits as you described Gin. For me a lot of the bride and bridesmaids (sometimes 5, 7 of them) are to me just all about showing cleavage. I cringe at the split right down to the waist fronts on brides' dresses or boobs struggling to be covered. All of the dresses will be expensive. As to the cost of weddings again all te lavish room, table decorations and flowers not to mention the cake and favours for the guests. If course tge weddibg party must have their hair and makeup done at the hotel. Honestly I can go on and on about the "must haves" for a wedding these days.

It’s the brides day ! MOB and MOG just dress in comfy smart outfits that you can preferably wear again.

DS is getting married for the second time, although you’d be forgiven for thinking it is the first by arrangements. Wondering if I could get away with outfit worn for DD’s wedding. I cannot muster enthusiasm for an all-out MOG this time.

Here in Germany the wedding is a matter for the bride and bridegroom. Because there is no State Church, the couple have to be married at a registry office before they can get married in church. Sometimes there can be a couple of years between the two, and children may even have come along in the meantime, although it is also quite usual to have the registry office ceremony, say, on the Friday and the church ceremony on the Saturday.

The parents of bride and groom have no particular significance. You wear what you would normally wear to a church service on a high holiday. Definitely no hat!

On searching the internet I found a few ideas for the "Brautmutter" but they were just normal dresses or trouser suits. Obviously just put together from the normal ranges as they were modelled by young women more the age of the bride than her mother!
