Wedding outfits

For some random reason my social media has decided to shower me with postings about pre-loved mothers of brides outfits. Not having attended a wedding for many years I am astounded by the fashions. It appears mothers are outdoing their daughters for being the focus of attention. Dresses in orange, magenta, and extremely bold patterns accompanied in every case by a hat as big as a cartwheel which I have never seen worn elsewhere, well maybe by a few at Ascot races. Most dresses seem to come from a few fashion houses with Italian sounding names and at eye watering costs! I do not disapprove but it looks like almost a prescribed uniform. Is this a general thing or not?

DD1 had a summer wedding in a register office with the reception in a Riverside pub. I wore white wide leg trousers, white silky t-shirt, pink linen mix jacket and pink and white silk scarf. It felt smart and relaxed at the same time. Especially as most other family weddings have necessitated full on MOB/MOG.

DS is getting married for the second time, although you’d be forgiven for thinking it is the first by arrangements. Wondering if I could get away with outfit worn for DD’s wedding. I cannot muster enthusiasm for an all-out MOG this time.

Goodness yes.

I always wear the same dress, perhaps a different hat, have since our first daughter married so long ago.

Sago

My daughter is marrying in Spain later this year.
It’s a very informal affair to take place in the grounds of a stunning Villa.
I was away his weekend and saw a shop window just full of bright clothes.
I have purchased this for the big day

Very striking Sago, I do envy those with the height to pull that look off.
(I hope none of the male guests will be channelling their hippy vibegrin )

Dear Lord!
Me neither!
We’re expecting a lot of linen!

I am going to be an MOG in a few weeks and have also been following the same group as Notagran. It is fabulous because the ladies on it are so understanding and supportive ( and absolutely no politics😂). They also post photos of themselves in the outfits they are selling. Many of them are plus sized and not particularly tall and obviously not that young. It means that you can see what the outfits look on "real" women. I have bought a dressxwhich is ivory with blue dots all over it.
Admittedly some of the dresses and hats really are OTT and I am surprised at how many MOBs wear white or ivory. But as long as the bride doesn't mind I guess it's ok. Though I wouldn't dream of it personally.

At a summer family wedding last year I didn’t wear a hat, just a lovely decorated headband that matched my dress. I love hats but couldn’t justify the expense for the ones I liked! I wore a lovely ombré dress with a fitted waist and swishy skirt and a little fitted crop jacket which co ordinated but was not part of a ‘set’. I hope I looked ok as the outfit was ‘glam’ enough to be interesting but not OTT.

I love swishy clothes. I think it takes me back to a dress I had when I was a little girl. 💕

I have looked for this friendly site but can't find it.
Do you have a link please?

I Googled Pre loved wedding and occasion outfits. The Facebook page was there. I just had to scroll up to find it.

OK. Thanks.
I have done this and signed up.
I just thought it was going to be more "conversational"
Thanks again.

I went OTT for DD1’s first wedding, but got my money’s worth out of the outfit. I wore the complete outfit for Ladies Day at the Races and again for DH’s nephews wedding in Cheshire and my BF’s son’s wedding back in Durham. It came out again, without the hat for DD2’s graduation.
Although it’s quite old, I could still wear it tomorrow if needs be. Mind you, I’d need more comfortable shoes!

polly123 Mon 10-Apr-23 15:11:57

Some truly horrible outfits out there. I gave up and just wore the sort of clothes that suit me.

NotSpaghetti Mon 10-Apr-23 17:12:48

It's awkward though Polly - and easier, I think as bride's family as they are unlikely to be upset if you wear entirely what you want!

NotSpaghetti Mon 10-Apr-23 17:13:22

I agree though. Some horrible outfits.

Gin Mon 10-Apr-23 19:13:42

I am relieved that some of you agree with me. To my eyes some, not all, look more suited to a panto dame. Where does normal dress sense go ! Why do MOB seem to think it necessary to dress up in such an over the top way? Is it part if the current curse of wedding performances? A friend with a very demanding daughter is near to a breakdown with extraordinary demands for specialist cake, serviettes, flowers, outfits etc. She feels like running away!

The last wedding I attended the ladies were wearing the flowery dresses that have been so popular the last couple of summers. Nobody wore a hat of any kind.

Phew. I'm about to go to a wedding and this is what I am planning to wear. Although DH has said I can't wear my trainers with it, lol. This is entirely based on him saying if he has to wear proper shoes then so do I.

We are not "main party" so a fancy suit and hat is not needed, I'm planning to play the eccentric aunt instead!!

My DH's nephew is getting married in 3 weeks. My DH has ben informed by my DMIH that both his sisters, one who is mother of the groom. are spending in the region of £600 for their outfits. Mine is a £30 job from Brand Alley, not sure if I should be saying that, marked down from £100.We're not really party people and the last dress I bought was foe marrying DH, second marriage for both or us, wore it once and consigned it to the charity shop afterwards. We both hope to escape pretty quickly afterwards. Does that mean we are bad people?

No, smart people. Well done you.

I always wear the same silk column dress, with elbow sleeves, have for all weddings. It's pretty, classic, tailored, dresses up for any occasion - happy to be wearing it soon, to our widowed daughter's 2nd wedding.

New pretty heels. Dog ate my favourites.

anna7 Mon 10-Apr-23 21:32:41

Horses for courses surely. Some people (me included) like the opportunity to dress up for a change, some people aren't fussed. Neither is bad, just different.

NotSpaghetti Mon 10-Apr-23 22:01:49

Oh dear Norah - I wish I was slim enough for one of my existing "smart" outfits!

M0nica Tue 11-Apr-23 11:49:47

I have never fussed about dressing for weddings, just put on something smart. In my working days, probably something I wore to work, dolled up with jewellry etc.

For DS's wedding I wore an unstructured silk suit I had bought for my graduation a couple of years previously.

I will always dress up, and if I need a new outfit, will buy one.

Genetics. Lucky me.

I really prefer slim jeans with Chucks. Or with a jacket and loafers.

Otherwise it's pastel silk column dress or a navy, with jacket or not - 2 boring, predictable, classic forever dresses. High heels.

This coming August, I`m going to be Grandmother of the Groom, and can`t find anything to wear! Ideally, I`d like something long to cover my swollen legs and feet, but as I`m only 4`11" and fat, I don`t think that would be a good look, so I`m still searching.

V3ra Tue 11-Apr-23 20:17:28

Hellogirl11 I'd suggest a trousers and top outfit would work best for you and look smart 🙂

MerylStreep Tue 11-Apr-23 20:55:50

Look at Palazzo pants. They will hide your legs and feet.
Wear a long floaty top to go with them.

Did you look at Box 2 HelloGirl
The trousers could always be shortened
