Dress opinions please

I've bought a dress online and it arrived this morning. When i tried it on I thought it looked really nice (I'm size 18 and don't have much confidence in clothes shopping). When I asked OH for his opinion he looked, said "Hmmm, its OK. It's a bit 'busy' though and it looks old fashioned, like something from the 70s".
'Busy' is his favourite word for something with a lot of pattern.
Now I don't know whether or not to keep the dress. I liked it but now it seems spoiled.
I think (hope!) I've attached a pic of the dress and am keen to get your opinions.

I think the dress style is fine , but the fabric design looks a bit like someone’s been sewing up the curtains. The flowers are too swirly and the contrast panel pulls attention to the hem length. Sorry if this sounds over critical, I did work in textiles many moons ago and love analysing fabrics and fashion. But this is just my opinion and if you love it - go for it!

I like it , like the colour but I tend to avoid ties round the middle, prefer a dropped waist or an Empire line but that’s just personal preference.

It’s not a dress I would choose personally as I prefer to blend into the background, and this one is very colourful, although also very pretty.

Don’t like to bring it up, but the model is probably a size 10, and I wonder if it looks as good on a size 18?

Perhaps your DH is trying to be tactful? Often we see ourselves as we think we look, not as others see us.

As GSM said, if you could post a (face blank) picture of yourself wearing said dress, we could be more helpful.

For me, it’s all to do with how I feel in something.

How do you feel when you are wearing it?

If you don’t feel good, you won’t get the wear from it.

It sounds to me like you have already decided that you aren’t that keen on it

Same here

Can't possibly say how it looks on you, as I've no idea what size and shape you are. Looks quite nice on the young model, but it wouldn't suit me, as I'm full-busted and slim-hipped, so I'd end up looking rather top-heavy. It's a very 70's look, which I like, but maybe in a less "busy" pattern.

Given that the reviews from ladies who are up to size 22 are pretty positive I think it will be OK. Actually.

Bella23 Sun 23-Jul-23 09:33:19

I would ask a female friend and family if you can trust their judgment.
Personally, I find it hopeless buying anything DH initially does not like as comments are made when I wear them straight away. I sometimes leave them in the wardrobe for a few weeks and then put them on if I like them and he doesn't even recognise them.

He he, no one has commented on the price of the dress, (I have no idea by the way, and would have no inclination to check).
Perhaps it's just me who gets picked on!

If you feel happy and confident in it, then that is all that matters. Step forth into the sunshine and enjoy!

I think it’s a great dress. The size of the flower makes it more fun than a little ditzy print and the pattern at the bottom adds interest. If you like it then wear it is my motto.

Redhead56 Sun 23-Jul-23 10:23:01

It’s what I would wear it’s long lovely and feminine and covers the tops of arms. Keep it wear and I bet you get compliments on how nice you look.

I don’t know the price, but I think it’s from Cotton Traders - I seem to recall seeing it in their catalogue. How did you get picked on, Joseann? I can’t see your dress?

It is lovely, but I wonder how tall you are. This would be full length on me. I'm not tall and a lot of the models are.

Blossoming Sun 23-Jul-23 11:31:17

It’s lovely Valels, if it fits well and the colours suit you go with it.

The reviews from larger ladies say it’s a flattering fit, it isn’t tight and slim fitting,

Mollygo Sun 23-Jul-23 11:32:00

It looks good. If you look at yourself in the mirror and like what you see, keep it. That’s what counts, unless your DH will keep commenting negatively.
I tried a lovely top on Friday. DH loved it, but I 😢thought it looked better on the coat hanger.

BigBertha1 Sun 23-Jul-23 11:34:46

Its a lovely dress I would wear it. Can I ask where its from?

RosesandLilac Sun 23-Jul-23 11:48:04

I bought this one from Roman, I’m an 18 and I absolutely love it!

I actually don’t ask DH anymore if he likes something because it’s not his decision and life’s too short!

I am with your husband, I think it is pretty awful, far too busy and too long for me. I personally think it is a young, tall, slim person's dress although you will hate me for saying that. Sorry. I am 5.2 with no bust whatsoever and could definitely not get away with wearing that.

grannyrebel7 Sun 23-Jul-23 12:10:12

Love it! Bet you look great in it. What do men know? smile

Shelflife Sun 23-Jul-23 12:17:19

If you like it , keep and wear it !

Mandy74 Sun 23-Jul-23 12:44:11

I think, as someone upthread suggested, we could give better advice if we saw a picture of you wearing the dress. A pic of you, without showing your face, would help people form an opinion. Although you would maybe need to be prepared for some people saying it didn’t suit you?

tiredoldwoman Sun 23-Jul-23 13:44:35

I love your dress and hubby is correct as I had one very similar in the 70's and loved it . I wish I'd kept it sad

Tenko Sun 23-Jul-23 16:14:11

I like the dress , I’m 5.2 and don’t mind dresses being long . The v neckline and waist are flattering and the large floral pattern has taken over from the ditsy florals of previous years . The black background means it’s trans seasonal , so will be ok for autumn and spring.
I’d wear it with boots for the colder months and trainers or Birkenstocks in the summer.
As for your DH , sorry but they don’t have a clue, I’d ask a female friend or female family member for advice .
I take my DD advice rather than my DH anytime .
