Dress opinions please

I've bought a dress online and it arrived this morning. When i tried it on I thought it looked really nice (I'm size 18 and don't have much confidence in clothes shopping). When I asked OH for his opinion he looked, said "Hmmm, its OK. It's a bit 'busy' though and it looks old fashioned, like something from the 70s".
'Busy' is his favourite word for something with a lot of pattern.
Now I don't know whether or not to keep the dress. I liked it but now it seems spoiled.
I think (hope!) I've attached a pic of the dress and am keen to get your opinions.

Someone said it was from Cotton Traders so I had a look (not with a view to buying, just being nosy). I see the back of the waist is elasticated - would that make your backside stick out like a galleon in full sail? Just a thought.

Maybe, GSM, if it did that anyway!

I have a couple of dresses from Cotton Traders which have this elastication in the back. It’s not the dress that features here. Although the dresses were the correct size for me, I needed to sew in an extra piece of elastic to loosen the dress around the waist (I do have a bit of a tummy!) otherwise I definitely WOULD been a galleon in full size!

I think the dress is lovely, in the picture, although I don’t usually like Cotton Traders. Have you tried the dress on, with hair and make up done, so you are looking your best? If you feel comfortable and confident, wear it! 😊

The dress is lovely but as to whether it suits you, who knows!

Does it suit your size, shape, height?

This........

I think it’s lovely. Even if I didn’t wear it I’d happily hang it up in the bedroom and gaze at it adoringly. He’s right, it does look old fashioned but doesn’t realise that old fashion is now new fashion. I’d be tempted to buy it myself even though I can’t remember the last time I bought a ‘frock’. I’ve always loved floral patterns on a dark background so I am biased.

I like the dress and have some similar. Get your husband to take a picture of you wearing it, it is a better way to see how you look. If you are confident it looks good then keep it.

This. Put it on with your hair done how you would wear it, the shoes you would wear and get some photos taken from all sides. Failing that use a full length mirror. Sometimes things don't hang the way we expect them to, and give you an entirely different shape (which could be good or bad). If you like it, wear it.

Mr A sometimes dislikes things I buy because he can't imagine what it would look like on, with shoes, jackets, etc. Usually once I'm wearing it he changes his mind.

I love it and would wear it .
I'm 5'5" and a size 20 .
I score everything I buy and wear .
I don't enjoy shopping with my female friends though they think that I have very good taste .

I've noticed that most men aren't keen on patterns and especially florals !
They seem to like plain colours especially red ,black or denims !

If you like your new dress , wear it and enjoy it !

IMO your DH is quite right! It is a dress right out of the seventies.

If you are comfortable wearing what you wore 50 years ago, and with the fact that your DH obviously doesn't really want to go anywhere with you dressed like that, then keep the dress.

The dress may look lovely on you, but as the photo was presumably not of you, I can't possibly know if the dress suits you, or not.

Hi Valels, what did you decide to do?
My husband's idea of high praise is 'That looks comfortable.' So I never ask him what he thinks. I've got a full length mirror and always check my reflection ( front side and back, also sitting down). My daughter is a stern critic too and through her influence I'm gradually buying fewer clothes but spending more. Stuff def fits better and hangs better.

There’s a saying that if you wore it first time round you probably shouldn’t be wearing it the next. It can’t apply to everything of course but how the dress looks on a tall, slender young model and how it would look on someone much older and larger are not one and the same.

He has very conservative criteria and seems to me to lack imagination. I suppose he felt he had to produce an opinion on a topic of small interest to him.

IMO opinion the dress is dignified, shapely enough, pretty pattern, a shape that is easy to wear. I specially like the sleeves.

love the dress! It suits you so beautifully. It kinda has a silhouette that seems both flattering and comfortable. If you're looking for some styling tips or accessories to pair with it, I think a little search to find 1970s fashion inspiration wouldn't be bad!

I think the op has sorted her problem.
FIRST POSTED JULY 23.

It’s something I would wear with a long plain cardigan in a colour that matches. I got a silver grey long cardigan from George at Asda it would match it very well.

Just noticed it’s an old post !

farmgran Sun 03-Nov-24 10:55:47

I've been looking for a dress on line too and really like that one.
Maybe send us a photo of you wearing it. You don't have to show us your fave if you don't want to.

Madgran77 Sun 03-Nov-24 11:14:31

Dress for yourself not anyone else x

Shelflife Sun 03-Nov-24 14:50:54

If you like it Keep it! I have long since
stopped taking my DHs ' advice ' . He often says he is not keen on what I have purchased, then when I wear it a week later he is likely to say ' that suits you ' 🤣 . So tend not to bother asking now. Keep it and enjoy wearing it - I think it is lovely!!

It is 16 months since the Original Post. I imagine the poster has come to a decision by now. grin

I can’t help wondering why it is that if clothing -in particular, looks like something from the ‘70s that is considered a bad thing.
Perhaps for some men of a certain age it was the last time they took note of what was “in”.
Personally I loathe and detest anything 80s due to it being forever tainted for me by images from Dallas and Margaret Thatcher.
