Are serums worth it?
(46 Posts)I went to the hairdresser yesterday and as the boss was away I was honoured with his usual chair in the big window. My goodness what an old hag! I had many more wrinkles than I thought. So now I'm thinking better get on with serum and some botox. I looked at Clarins, my usual make, and goodness me the price. is it worth it I ask myself and now I ask you if you would be so kind as to give me the raw unvarnished truth?
Thank you all for your comments. I'm still in a quandary but it helps to know there isn't a clear answer to my op.
I use Simple radiance serum after a recommendation on here. Makes my skin glow. Don’t think anything will rid the skin of wrinkles unless you have Botox or a face lift - both drastic measures in my opinion.
My skin reacts to Superdrug, Elizabeth Arden, No 7, L’Oreal, and some Nivea products, but my eyes react to Nivea and itch and water despite the fact that I take antihistamine every day and use prescribed antihistamine eye drops, one that’s only available on prescription as the over the counter ones didn’t work. For that reason I’m quite reluctant to try new products and stick to those I know on my face. I can use body lotions from any range.
There are those with lovely skin who never use any products and those with leathery wrinkles who spend a fortune on creams and magic potions. It's genetic. I don't think starting any regime at any age will reverse the ageing procedure. Applying moisturiser and avoiding the sun from puberty onwards might help, but you're basically stuck with what you've got, and, probably, what your mother and grandmother had.
Having said that, I have started using a serum - just a drop straight after showering in the morning. After breakfast and cleaning my teeth, I apply my usual day cream. I use L'Oréal which is usually quite reasonably priced, but I do go for the "65+" kind.
I don't know if it helps. I do have wrinkles and have used creams since I was 14. My face feels taut and "unwashed" if I don't put some kind of cream on.
Perhaps I should have left a square inch somewhere without cream all this time, to see if it ever made a difference.
I’m one of the fortunate JackyB I rarely use anything, Simple moisturiser if I remember, but very ad hoc. I’ve never worn a foundation, no make up for over thirty years and wash my face with water only. I’ve hardly any wrinkles and am in my late sixties.
My mother never used anything but Pond's Cold Cream, and had lovely skin until the day she died. I always use Nivea or Olay, have tried serum but so expensive and it made no difference at all. I think it's over-hyped personally.
The new Boots Future Renew products are getting very good reviews. When launched they sold out very quickly and had a waiting list for products. They have a serum as well as other creams and moisturisers. Easy to get now though.
I haven’t tried them so don’t know what they are like, but I am considering it.

New products always get hyped up to make you feel as if you really must have them! It doesn’t mean they work, it’s just a sales ploy.
Are there ever any miracles 6 months down the line…. NO

There was an advert on a very recently for that product to get £10 off in store so maybe it’s not selling as well as they hoped after the hype

I am a serum junky Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Serum has been my fall back for as long as I can remember.
Espa’s serum is good (it was part of a spa package gift)
Mine too but I recently tried Lancôme’s advanced Génifique youth activating concentrate. Waiting for results.

My mother always used Ponds Cold Cream and I use it for removing my eyeshadow. She had lovely skin as do I for my age with very few wrinkles. I spend a fortune on creams and serums so maybe I’m just wasting my money but I’m too scared and too vain to stop now.
I wash my face with plain water and use Aldi caviar moisturiser spf 15 anti age sometimes I isr their serum.
I don’t think anything does miracles however expensive but face feels a bit tight if I don’t use it.
Serums plump and nourish the skin so that it's resilient against the formation of wrinkles and rough texture.
I think the best thing you can do for your skin is protecting it from the sun. My Mum always wore a big sun hat, never sunbathed. She never smoked or drank and ate home grown food, no junk.
She lived to nearly 97 and was pretty much wrinkle free, everybody commented on her lovely skin. She used Camay soap to wash her face and body and used Pond’s skin cream.
Smoking and the sun really damage your skin.

Boots often have offers like that. I've just bought loads of it. We get extra staff discount once a year so, with the three for two offer it takes a lot of money off it. I've always used the No 7 serum but slap any old moisturiser on the top. Recently my skin has aged horribly, even though I always wear sunscreen so i thought I'd buy the whole package and I do think my skin looks better. I asked the girl in the shop what foundation she was wearing because her skin looked lovely and she said it was the protect and perfect one which I've actually bought but rarely worn. I don't think the future renew serum works as well under foundation as their other ones, it's a bit gloopier. Anyway I'm using the serum plus the day and night cream. I also bought their lift and luminate serum concealer because touche eclat wasn't hiding the horrible black shadows I now have under my eyes. I've had to completely rethink my make up because when I applied it after three years of hardly going anywhere I looked like a clown [you know the panda eyes scene in The Favourite...].
I use nothing but soap and water and I m happy without all the expensive potions made to make us feel insecure with what we ve got
My skin is just about all I have got these days. Eyebrows and eyelashes are sparse to the point of being non existent and the hair on my head isn't much better
I really like Simple Radiance Serum. It has SPF30, is non-oily and gives my skin a bit of a boost. Also often available on special offer at Boots, Sainsburys and other supermarkets for £5.00. Normal price £7.00. Just three drops on the palms of my hands, rub together lightly and then press on the face.
I'm not convinced that anything apart from surgical intervention can reverse wrinkles, but good hydration from moisturiser can soften them so that they are not so noticeable.

Every time I tried Nivea it gave me spots. No idea why.
My mother swore buy Nivea and used it by the pot load. Any Nivea product makes me sore and my face and neck erupt in spots, I then found out that most of their products contain Lanolin which I am highly allergic to. I have to be careful with any product that it does not contain lanolin. maybe you have a slight intolerance to it.
