Can I ask you which sites/shops you use for fashion and styling inspiration? So many sites for "older women" are aimed at 50yrs, even Gransnet does this. It's 20 yrs since I was 50 and I am in need of a new look. Any suggestions ?

How have I managed to live it hour a purple coat?

So much for clearing out my wardrobe, I seem to be operating the method of one item out of wardrobe three items in, basically I am a lost cause.

(Don’t ask about boots, shoes and bags 😱)

GG, I am of a similar ilk and despite walking away from the site, that purple coat is drawing me back!
My sensible head, says I have enough, my heart says that life is so problematic just now, although I rarely go out, go ahead and treat yourself!
I could walk up and down the drive wearing it! 🤣

Calli, I am a redhead, it just won't work and I do not suit hats!
Six years of wearing my 6 and 7/8 convent school hat, ( I had a large head) put me off hats for life!

How to recognise a Gransnetter?

She'll be wearing a grey Chevron blanket coat 😁

I will be wearing the purple one from Texture, I already have a similar blanket coat from my Roman Holiday days. 🤣

Ooh, I like purple!

With a red hat, Marydoll?

Hi all
Thanks so much for all your help. I've just logged on for a look and was amazed at the response. I've been a bit busy but will read through the thread tomorrow & digest your advice. Thank you so much .

Actually, grey is not my colour either, although a very dark grey with a bright scarf might be ok 🙂

I’m 67 and this year for the first time I’ve found mini swing dresses ( bear in mind I’m 5 ft 3 inches so they are above the knee but not that short) with opaque black tights and ankle boots make me feel younger and I hope look a bit more energetic. I have a collection of midi dresses from previous years that I’m not so keen on now.

Before I became unable to travel, I used to take an empty suitcase to Rome and fill it with similar items!
Sigh!

I've got several pairs of trousers from Saint and Sophia, also bought their leather biker jkt. I've got lots of different pairs of jeans, some from Lidl that are a great fit. My big luxury buy when I feel like treating myself are cashmere jumpers from Cashmere and Cotton, they are lovely quality and beautiful colours, got my eye on one in Peridot ATM.

Cid24 Saints and Sofia have some lovely stuff and their prices are reasonable too. I’m tempted by the damson Apartment trousers but I have too many clothes and I gave into temptation and bought a new dress from John Lewis recently.

I love wearing dresses, but not the giant, frilly tents that are in fashion. Instead I buy mine from Weird Fish on line. They are so comfortable and hard wearing. They look quite short on the web site (tall, leggy models), but I am 5ft 3 and they come down to my knees. I can go barelegged in the summer without looking wannabe young, then add tights, ankle boots and a cardi if needed in the winter. Also very practical for my main mode of transport which is a bike and OK for both daytime and casual evening wear.

It depends on the jeans and the woman don’t you think, Bijou?

I can massively recommend Texture ( online ). Brilliantly designed clothes. With a bit of a twist in many peices. And really not expensive. Especially if you hang on for the Sale items! I’m 60 size 12/14. 5ft 5. Everything I own from them (which is quite a bit now 😄 ) is graceful, forgiving & comfy. I do get lovely comments too 🥰

Well I don’t think about age but buy what I like n feel good in apart from quite recently went to a black tie dinner n as I have a few long evening gowns decided to get something but more modern n midi length. Went to a lovely gown shop but fell in love with a black chiffon n sequin jump suit bought it loved it but oh dear a word of warning not the best idea when visiting the ladies bathroom so never again lesson learned!!

Bijou Tue 17-Oct-23 18:33:07

Until about twenty years ago I made all my own dresses, suits, skirts etc. I think the worst things are jeans on women and I don’t think a lot of women don’t look at their backs. I never liked trousers. I haven’t made anything for some years now and still have a dress I made forty years ago. I don’t bother with fashion. Now I am housebound I don’t need coats any more.

It's funny that so many Gransnetters think M&S is frumpy. My very stylish daughter and friends (mid 40's) are loving M&S at moment. Maybe it's how items are put together.

I suspect their feelings about M&S were formed several years ago, when M&S went through a really bad period style wise. It’s really improved in the last year, but if you’ve stopped going I guess you wouldn’t know that.

Agree. I don't buy a lot of clothes each year but last year I bought two midi skirts at M&S and this year I've just bought an aviator jacket ready for the colder weather. I was tempted by a couple of thin jumpers. They did go through a really bad patch but seem to be on the up and up. Their shops certainly seem to be quite busy at the moment.

This is from an American blog, but she has some reasonable ideas, if a little “safe”……..

I think it’s lovely!

Do you mean Country Collection?

Rosiebee Tue 17-Oct-23 17:43:27

I'm 5'2"- short and round. I hate neutrals and pastels although I like a soft grey. Tend to wear dark jeans / chinos, usually from Cotton Traders or M&S, with loose bright tops. I do have a real weakness for cardigans and jackets. I like to feel comfortable and try to always dress appropriately for whatever I'm doing and am happy to buy clothes from wherever. Some favourite tops have come from Asda and Sainsbury's. Can do smart if needed. Online sites I've used - Box 2 -when they have a sale, Taking Shape, Evans and Lagenlook - quirky oversized. It really depends on your outlook and size. When I was working, I always had to look a bit smart, now it's whatever I fancy. Some great ideas in comments.

Your new look should be the stylish clothes that are geared for 50’ish women on GN and other sites.

They will not make you look like a teenager. Find colors, garments that fit your body (even plus sizes) and give it a try. It’s going to give you a lift! 😃

Why look for “old women’s clothes?”
I would never do that.
