Is “sexy” what you want to be in your mid-80’s?

My heart sank when I saw the headline “Dame Prue Leith sexed -up”
Dame Prue Leith has been “sexed up” to walk the runway in a latex dress for avant-garde eco-designers Vin + Omi
The Bake Off judge, 84, appeared in the duo’s 20th anniversary show, Moxie, in Kensington as part of London Fashion Week wearing a black latex dress with red stitching and matching evening gloves
Speaking before the show, Omi told The Telegraph: “You’re going to see Prue Leith like you’ve never seen her before, not in your wildest dreams.
“. Even her husband doesn’t know what she’s wearing, he’s going to be shocked but he’s going to love it. We’re gonna sex her up. “
He added that Dame Prue, a close friend of the pair, is “game for anything
Laying my cards on the table
1) I don’t think black latex is “sexy” - I think it looks tarty and that is NOT the same thing
2) black and scarlet are such an unimaginative and hackneyed combination if looking glamorous is the intention
3) with trainers?
4) I think Prue Leith has her own, colourful style. I love the big glasses, the bold necklaces and adventurous colours - she generally looks fantastic.
“Sexed up” is not her style and it depresses me that yet another man seems to equate looking sexy with looking attractive.
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

The alternative to that black outfit is not only beige.
Fair enough for Prue to walk down the catwalk, age should not come into it but that outfit would still look totally ridiculous whether the model was 24 or 84.

Are the designers misogynists?

She s a very good looking lady and doesn’t look her age at all she also game for lots with a lot of spirit but that thing that she is wearing is stupid and very unflattering for anyone 19 to 90 it’s awful for any age and the designers look ridiculous too
Stupid imo

"Mutton" and "Lamb" spring to mind.
Leave it to publicity-desperate wannabe teen porn stars Prue, and go back to class and style.

She looks silly and most definitely not sexy.
Now I can't see Mary Berry needing to do this, and there is a Lady.

I'm 72. What I want to be at eighty four is alive and well: clothing style tbc.

🙏 me too.

Kate1949 Sat 14-Sept-24 17:50:58

My point is it doesn't matter if she looks awful or dreadful. She's 84 and she's done something different and probably for her, exciting. Good for her.

Grandma70s Sat 14-Sept-24 18:10:19

I’m 84 and I have no desire to look sexy. Elegant would be my ideal.

It's a fashion show!
Perhaps she could wear a nice Seasalt top, with a cardi, some M&S trousers, and Hotter shoes.

Exactly MissA

A very successful outfit, as it has got maximum publicity.

Not intended to be worn anywhere other than the runway

MissAdventure Sat 14-Sept-24 18:34:00

I think she's secure enough in herself to wear her usual type of clothing as soon as the show is over.

I doubt she'll be slinking around in that type of outfit on Bake Off.

She has lent her name- and reputation - to Kettlewell Colours.
Maybe this is what we have come to expect for 84 year olds!

Now you're talking. Love Kettlewell!

She looks great there (I think)

She looks small and dumpy in this oversized garment.. not her usual colourful. vibrant self..

I think the term sexed up is ridiculous IMO no woman could look sexy in that outfit

I absolutely hate the term “sexed up”

I think she’s a bit mad, but it’s ok to wear whatever you want

That would be funny 😂😂😂😂

Surely we don’t expect to wear one style of clothing just because of our age?I don’t,never have and never will I would be very irritated if anyone suggested I should.

Allira Sat 14-Sept-24 22:49:37

So would you wear that black creation paddyann?

Kate1949 Sat 14-Sept-24 23:05:33

I think she looks fabulous

Allira Sat 14-Sept-24 23:11:24

The audience looks distinctly underwhelmed.

henetha Sat 14-Sept-24 23:17:42

I admire any woman who's brave enough to be different.
Personally I don't want to look sexy, just be comfortable now at very nearly 87. My creaky bones need warmth and softness. smile

grumppa Sat 14-Sept-24 23:59:44

Dare a man intervene?

There are two separate questions here, one specific and one general. Specifically, I expect Prue Leith thought it was a huge joke, and I suppose it might look sexy to followers of the Marquis de Sade.

On the more general question, as I approach my mid eighties, I would love to look sexy, but I'm a realist! And what could I do if I did?

Deedaa Sun 15-Sept-24 00:09:23

Well if you can't look outrageous at 84 when are you going to do it? Sadly I don't know any deranged designers who would try sexing me up.

heath480 Sun 15-Sept-24 00:48:08

That is very Prue Leith, she loves attention and talking about her sex life….yuck.

Vito Sun 15-Sept-24 09:52:38

I'm going against the grain, I think she looks great.

Jennerdysphoria Sun 15-Sept-24 10:13:12

Well I really like it, and for once the trainers actually go with the dress. But I don't think it is 'sexy' and don't accept that any outfit should be 'sexy' by default, on anyone (of any age).

David49 Sun 15-Sept-24 10:15:59

No Prue that’s not sexy, in general if you have the figure at 70 or 80 you can be very stylish, even alluring, plenty of celebrities do that.
Just make the best of what you’ve got, nice makeup, nice smile and sparking eyes
