Women’s Parallel Wide Trousers - love or loathe?

Do you like the new wide leg trousers that are abundant in the shops this Autumn and will you be wearing them?
I bought a smart black pair this week and like the style. Of course we wore them in the 70’s so they are not new.
The advantage for me is they skim over my lumpy bits at the bottom and thighs.

Yes I like them as I find them more comfortable to wear than something clingy. I have a pair of fairly new ones that are so wide you’d think it was a long skirt.

I ditched my wide legged summer trousers a few years ago after catching my toe in them and falling on the stairs. Fortunately nothing more serious than a few bumps and bruises but enough to put me off for good.

I like the look of them and bought a pair of black wide leg jeans from M&S they fitted well but for some reason I did not feel they looked good on me so I returned. I am 5'1" so maybe they look better on longer legs.

I love them, specially just above ankle-length. great with heels or boots.

Yes I like them, much better than skinny, drainpipe jeans

I don’t like any trousers that are too extreme, so not too wide nor too narrow. In between is best for me. I also don’t like the look being pushed of wide trousers hanging in folds on the floor. Apart from being dangerous, they look like you couldn’t be bothered to get them taken up!

Flappy trousers trip me up, so I do not wear them.

TillyTrotter Sat 14-Sept-24 16:37:56

Oh definitely not good when they are over-long.
I think Queen Camilla wore some last year at an event and comments were not favourable. I recall they were a nice cobalt blue, perhaps others remember them?

Me, too. I trip over enough as it is!

I have several pairs, I like them, but they don’t go with all styles of tops, so I keep my slim trousers as well.

Casdon Sat 14-Sept-24 16:54:01

It depends very much on your shape I think. They look great on tall, long legged, slim hipped women. They don’t look good on 5 foot nothing, short legged, bigger ladies. I’m in between, 5 foot 6 size 12, and I have to choose carefully, so parallel legged, and moderately wide, worn with heels looks okay on me, but with flats I look dumpy. It’s a trousers minefield.

I've got one pair in summery viscose but I am always aware I could get my foot caught and come a cropper. They do feel comfy.

I don't like slim fit so it's straight or bootcut for me, no matter the fashion.

Kim19 Sat 14-Sept-24 17:02:09

Think they look quite awful on everyone I've seen thus far.

Allira Sat 14-Sept-24 17:11:03

Oh.

Perhaps I'd better get the sewing machine out.

Tenko Sat 14-Sept-24 17:20:16

I’ve got two pairs of wide leg jeans from Tu . Pale denim and ecru . They’re really comfortable. I wear them with trainers, Birkenstock sandals and Birkenstock clogs . Your tops need to be a bit shorter , than with skinny or slim jeans . Oh and I’m 5,2 and a 12 .

TillyTrotter Sat 14-Sept-24 17:44:23

I’m the same height as you Tenko .
I’m comfortable with the size/shape I am and will wear wide leg trousers anyway. I’m not on a catwalk.

If you look like Rita Chakrabati, then wow.
Unfortunately, most of us don't.

Visgir1 Sat 14-Sept-24 18:20:26

Love them.
I got a bought a pair of wide leg jeans with Patch pockets on the front, reminds me of the ones I wore as a teenager. I have had more comments as to how nice they are from my friends. Now my chums are venturing in this style of Jeans.
I will keep my other straight leg jeans as they will fit better with boots.

BlueBelle Sat 14-Sept-24 18:34:53

Love them
I went into them last year when they first became ‘in’ we had been in tight skinny stuff for so long it was like a breathe of fresh air I ve got light colourful ones for summer and a bit heavier wide legs for colder months with chunky jumpers and white trainers and love dungarees and wide leg jumpsuits too

AskAlice Sat 14-Sept-24 18:35:17

I made several pairs last year for the summer months, 3/4-elasticated waist with two small pleats either side at the front. I'm with you TillyTrotter, they hide a multitude of sins! Also they were lovely and cool in our (occasional) hot weather and when I was abroad. I'm only 5 foot 4 and a size 14, but everyone said they looked lovely so obviously I didn't look too Weeble-like!

I'm going to make a couple of pairs from some nice suiting fabric I have in my stash to wear in winter, and perhaps a pair in a check knit fabric I have also been hoarding...

Musicgirl Sat 14-Sept-24 18:40:00

I used to wear wide leg trousers as I felt they covered my enormous bottom and thighs (thank you, lipodoema!). However, I saw some very unflattering pictures of me wearing them and decided that straight leg trousers suited me better. I have short legs and I looked rather clown-like. I think it is another fashion that suits those who are taller and with longer legs.

I am delighted to say I still have trousers like this from last time they were in fashion. All I need is a new pair of heeled boots as I am just 5'. Don't really see a lot of difference between my vintage ones and the new lot so I will 'strut my stuff' with pride.

Jaxjacky Sat 14-Sept-24 21:05:20

One pair in linen, a good few years old, I wear them occasionally with flat sandals, I’m 5 11, size 14/16, I prefer straight leg jeans or chinos.
