I'd just add that I also use an eyelash primer, which is lighter than a mascara, for some definition.
I apply a small amount of light powder blusher to my cheekbones, with a brush, because it glides on more easily than applying a cream one or some bronzer with my fingertips. If you've got uneven skin tone, a powder one works better I think. You can really blend it well with a brush. I've always used brushes for very small amounts of blusher, eyeshadow, lipstick and eyeliner, to blend well and soften. To start with, a blusher brush might be more useful. It might be helpful to ask for advice on the right colours for blusher etc. from someone working at a makeup counter.
I like to use a little vaseline on my lips and I use lipstick sparingly, more as a lipstain, unless I'm out for the evening.
If you're looking for a good, inexpensive, paraben-free sunscreen, I recommend Altruist, which is created by dermatologists.
I don't have much else on my bathroom shelf or in my make-up bag other than the things I've mentioned. I think the key things are to cleanse well, tone, moisturize and protect your skin and to even out skintone; then add a small touch of brightness and definition to your face. I hope this helps, juniel and that you feel you've got some good ideas to start with.
