I have a PAYG mobile, £10 last me ages ,I tried to topup today, on line but couldn't and I couldn't understand because it's always so easy to do, I'm with Tesco and have found out that they've stopped PAYG now...they want you to take a bundle...you pay monthly, I don't know yet what it costs but I can imagine it will work out dearer then PAYG, just something else that folk have no control over, I'll have a look around other providers ...or maybe they're all getting rid of PAYG

Have a look at Giff Gaff. They start their top ups at £5. Never had an issue with them. I've been with them for 10 years now

I swapped from O2 to Lebara last week and it was straighforward including keeping my phone number. O2 provided the transfer code immediately. I phoned O2 later to claim the unexpired money on my PAYG which was easy.

My main reason for swapping was not wanting to have to top up every month and the low cost of Lebara which uses the Vodaphone network which has a good signal here.

my daughter got me a £20 voucher in the supermarket, phoned the number put in the 16 digits and the money went straight to my phone, that £20 will last me for months. but I still wish they'd left it the way it was,

Unfortunately, they won't leave things the way they are. Companies have to devise new ways to get you to spend more, or give you less for what you already spend. They need to 'grow' their profits year on year.

That's why we have all these time-consuming-to-understand plans and packages for various utilities, none of which can be compared like-for-like.

They can't tempt more customers simply by offering lower prices - otherwise they would continually have to undercut each other and it would be a race to the bottom for them.

Expect another change in about a year ot two - which will probably be a raised minimum top up of £10 or £15 each time.

It's spreading to care-homes now also - quite a few in my area will not accept self-funders unless they have sufficient funds for at least 2 years. Possibly because debt has been loaded onto the care home by venture capitalists so they need to budget for paying it back.

There is something to be said in favour of nationalisation of certain industries and sectors. But that ship's sailed...

I pay in about £30 and it lasts me about 4 months - I’m with Tescomobile

I am with Tesco mobile and it costs me £7 per month for unlimited calls Pay by direct debit and forget it.

The only extra cost is if I send a picture by text message. ( I use Whastapp which is free for that)

I had to switch to smart phone for work, and would not go back, but you can now buy what is called a Simple phone for about £10
