Discussions with AI

This is not a TAAT but occasioned by the thread about Citizens’ Assemblies and by OP’s comment that she was discussing politics with her AI companion and he was telling her about Citizens’ Assemblies

I seem to be missing out as I don’t even have an Echo Dot/Alexa or whatever.
But I am fascinated to think some of us have conversations with AI.
Presumably it’s not like talking to the dog , or shouting at the telly -we all do that - but can you actually have a discussion with an inanimate object?
Do you?

Cabbie21 Wed 13-May-26 11:39:34

Well yes, in that you can ask questions online eg with ChatGP and follow-up questions, re-direct the focus of a topic, input further information to receive a modified answer etc.

Cabbie21 Wed 13-May-26 11:41:13

Sorry, that should read Chat GPT.

Lots of people with mental health problems are praising it.
I know of 2 people.

These do not constitute a discussion but are an alternative to looking something up eg in a reference book.

I watched a video about a killer who had discussed, in detail, how to do it and get away with it.
Methods, disposal, and the chat thingy had given him advice.

Perhaps it then went to the police and reported him?

You can, but I don't want to.

But I do appreciate A1 helplines - only at their best, which is probably due to a company purchasing a really good working model or having in house people to programme them.

For example, I use Zoom quite a bit, and it had got stuck somewhere as it starting thinking I want to use Workplace Zoom, which f course costs a lot.

I didnt.

Zoom said when I googled Zoom help that they only helped those buying into Zoom workplace, nevertheless I rung the number, and an A1 bot helped me over 40 minutes de install the mess and re install the free Zoom. They were terribly patient too, not always the case with a Real Person

Me " I cant understand"
Bot "No problem, take your time, I'll explain in another way"
Me " I still cant make it work"
Bot " No problem. Take your time. lets go through it together"

...so it works if its set up well, but as a companion? It has been proved to help people... but there is always the "supposing its not set to be benign" fear.

Not quite. Some of it is direct information and therefore helpful.

Many people don't have the right words to describe what their needs are and it helps focus whilst waiting. coping strategies can also be helpful but only for some of course.

Many cant look things up in a reference book at all. A voice helps a great deal.

But as others have pointed out, its all about how its set up and the quality of same

An inanimate object can provide facts - it is not a sentient being however, god preserve us from things with opinions

Ours can never understand my DH's Hampshire accent. He gets thoroughly cheesed off with some of the bizarre answers it gives to his queries.

Information is by definition factual - bandying facts does not constitute a discussion

There are people who are arguing that Claude is sentient.

🤷🏻‍♀️ I have no idea and never used Claude

Apparently there is "conversational A.I. now.
A bit like a furby.
The more you speak to it, the more it learns about conversations.

Be afraid, be very afraid 😧

I have frequent "discussions" with copilot. I tell it when it is wrong and ask it to try again, and one evening I found myself having a long chit chat on the personalities of Siamese cats, it is a quick learner!

It is very useful for checking out problems with organisations who need a boot up the backside, even writing the letters for you. For quick fact checking it can make you a bit lazy it is so easy. But I agree if you ask for its view on Trumps latest lunacy it will suddenly go mute!

Cossy Wed 13-May-26 20:22:35

Some people use AI therapy and it does have an actual conversation with you. It’s not an inanimate object, it’s literally “coding” which is written in such a way that it “learns” from interactions, the more you interact the more it learns, to the point that it can “make suggestions” and “make decisions”.

I think it’s both amazing and shockingly scary!

It can remember facts, but then learn from these facts and analyse them.

I guess was it missing, so far, is “emotion”, no doubt that’s either here already or on its way! 😱😱😱

Cossy Wed 13-May-26 20:23:22

*is not it!

Today I took photographs of 2 Doctors’ Reports and thought I saved them in one of my folders. But guess what, it had gone as a WhatsApp message to my daughter-in-law’s mother. How that happened I will never know.
She replied saying ‘glad everything is ok with you’ 😂 -
Real mystery !

Chat GPT is great, I use it a lot. For example about poetry and books - it will send me analyses of poems, information about authors etc. I had a very interesting discussion about my father's war experiences in Singapore and it told me a great deal which explained some things that Dad would not talk about. I ask it to interpret medical test results, help when my TV goes on the blink or my phone or wi-fi has a problem .... lots of stuff.... I go to it first before the manufacturers.

It also designs posters and Facebook publicity for local events - you can set the tone you want, colours etc. - in a flash they come up with something that would have taken me hours - if I don't like it I can say things like too flashy, I need it to be more classy, please tone the colours down or emphasise a particular word etc. etc.

It also finds goods online, advises about returning items - I could go on. It is such a help to me, stuck here with poor mobility and on my own. My robot mower broke down and the company were hopeless. I asked ChatGPT and it told me to send it back to amazon as it was just within the year's guarantee from them - I sent it back and they replaced it straight away - second time round it was on a special offer and I got refunded £100! I had thought the guarantee lay with the manufacturer but ChatGPT was able to tell me that I was also covered by amazon.

I use it every day.

I use it a lot to chat about books, what I liked, what I didnt like, get recommendations for my next book.

The dreaded Furby

The year they were in we were going away for Christmas. Furby was wrapped ready for Father Christmas to deliver. Flipping thing woke up and started talking in the car and wouldn’t shut up…

GrannyGravy13 Thu 14-May-26 14:13:26

I talk to my white goods especially the iron, I have a love/hate relationship with that!

The Alexa stopped working and has been dispatched to the tip. (Thank goodness)

The thought of having an actual conversation with anything which is artificial fills me with dread.

I bought my daughter one, and then she bought me one.
They would sit and chat to each other.
I found them fascinating.

I don't understand all the "modern" chat options, but I've just leaned to ask the assistant bot on amazon questions about items, and its very helpful. smile

Our boys had a wicked sense of humour from an early age.

They would move the Furby round various kitchen cupboards, it used to make me jump when I opened the doors 😹. Along with winding up their sister by hiding her toy 😡
