Gone Girl

Eventually went to see the film yesterday. I read the book a couple of years ago and recommend it to my friends, who all seemed to enjoy it. The film was very good and faithful to the book, probably because Gillian Flynn wrote the screen play, also great casting.
The only thing I'd add, is to read the book, it allows you to savour the characters and their interactions. For example, Amy's parents have a larger role and you can understand some of her warped character.
I did think the sex scenes were definitely there for titilation and film profit, judging by the comments from the young men in the audience!!

Saw the film last night and didn'tenjoy it at all. Haven't read the book and won't do so now. Really don't see why it has been so highly rated on IMDB.

Went to see the film in Australia with my daughter and her Mother's Group! It was a special 'Spit the Dummy' showing, so the cinema was full of babies - glad they were all under one as language and violence a bit OTT! Had not read the book but enjoyed the film although was rather long, and found the ending strange and ultimately unsatisfying.

I went to see Gone Girl last night, I thought the casting of Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck was spot on from my memories of Nick and Amy in the book which I read last year. All in all a good adaptation in my opinion.

I didn't bother going to see Before I Go to Sleep, thought the books was very over hyped and not that good. Will probably hire it though when it goes to rental DVD.

I went to this last night and I really enjoyed it. I found it gripping, even though I had already read the book. No dropping off to sleep during this one although it lasted for about 2 1/2 hours!!

I've just come back from seeing Gone Girl - really good I thought but then as I say I loved the book.

I have the same sentiments as Grannyknot. I skimmed through and didn't really care about what happened in the end. Not sure what all the fuss is about.

Well, it shows how bad my memory is - I thought they both had the same ending!

I was quite taken in by the book at first, but soon found myself doing that thing of flicking through and skimming the pages in a sort of "okay I get it" kind of way.

It was the ending in the book Gone Girl that I felt was just wrong and unconvincing. I think I read the author had reworked it for the film?

I too hated 'Gone Girl' Charleygirl I wish I had read the reviews on Amazon first, many of which felt it was a total waste of reading time

Eloethan I agree not a patch on Hitchcock.

Before I Go to Sleep is one of the very few books that I've actually given up on, although I did skip to the end to find out what had been going on.

I don't think it helped that Richard Madeley kept raving on about it, revealing as he did so that the author was a man. He seemed to think that was somehow remarkable.

I also read the references to Gone Girl was "Hitchcockian" - probably one of the reasons I was keen to go as I love Hitchcock films. There was really no comparison with Hitchcock's genius for suspense in my opinion. His films weren't particularly long anyway.

I read "Before I Go to Sleep" on a very tedious overnight coach journey to Edinburgh, and it certainly entertained me. But I thought the denouement was unbelievable. But then I find that with a lot of thrillers - they're endings are silly. Most of the reviews said the film was a disappointment so we didn't bother going to see it.

I read the book and disliked it intensely. I cannot remember anything about the plot except that I couldn't identify with any of the characters. I shan't be paying good money to see it but I am really glad some of you enjoyed it.

eloethan husband and I keep moaning "Remember when movies were a perfect 90 minutes long?" For some reason all the films these days are 2 hours long or longer. One of the reviews I read for this film (which gave it four stars), praised the length as needed for building suspense, Hitchcock style.

SPOILER ALERT - film "Before I Go to Sleep" - I also saw this film recently (haven't read the book), where Colin Firth is cast as the baddie - and was completely unconvincing. Nicole Kidman was the other main character and she was equally as unconvincing. I wouldn't recommend that film at all.

I also hated the book so I would not dream of watching the film. I have to admit I only read a few chapters but I could not stand it. Still, we cannot like everything we read and that book was not for me- it was not the content but the style of writing.

I haven't read the book. We went to see it this evening and both quite enjoyed it, though it wasn't as good as the reviews had led me to expect.

It's also pretty long.

I wasn't going to see it but Mark Kermode has raved about it and I usually agree with his choices.

I wasn't mad about the book either, but I did think it would make a good film. The one weak casting in the film was Desi. The policewoman is great.

Me neither, I finished the book but did not enjoy it at all. Sorry GN.
