My life has been really busy and now I've hit a bit of a quiet stretch, which is bliss. So I've become hooked on this Australian show every day (I think, I have it on series record). It's one of those sprawling (wealthy) family sagas full of simmering passions, hidden secrets and all the rest, complete with a matriarch running the show (of course!)

Am really enjoying the beautiful settings and the main location, a beautiful mansion out in Australian bush somewhere. It is set in the 1950s.

Am I the only one watching it? grin

Thank you all for alerting me to this. I've never seen it but having read all of your comments I'm now downloading it to my tv and will watch a couple of episodes this afternoon. Well it is wet and windy!

Oh, my hat and coat! Episode 11.

I just cheered ... grin

Aren't the clothes fabulous?

I've been trying to think who Sarah reminds me of ... and today I decided she's Diana-esque (with a bit more nose).

Mamie Mon 08-Feb-16 15:53:25

Yes lovely frocks. I do think they have very white teeth for the time, though.
I cheered too. grin

LOL.

Does anyone think the young Italian is very like George Chakiris?
If anyone remembers!!

Grannyknot Mon 08-Feb-16 16:54:11

Of course! West Side Story. He's 81 now.

grannylyn65 Mon 08-Feb-16 17:04:08

smile

DH guessed Auntie Caroline's secret. Regina rivals grandma for nastiness.
smile great stuff.

Mamie Mon 08-Feb-16 17:38:37

Yes, I thought George Chakiris too.

grannylyn65 Mon 08-Feb-16 18:52:25

George

grannylyn65 Mon 08-Feb-16 18:56:02

The Italian!

I am so worried and upset about James! Nearly had a glass of wine at 4:30 in the afternoon!

HannahLoisLuke Tue 09-Feb-16 18:26:33

Thanks Grannyknot. I've now got this on catchup and am also hooked. Watched up to the sixth episode. Great for when there's nothing much else on that I fancy.

ninathenana Wed 10-Feb-16 15:50:05

Poor James, it's so sad to think that in the '50s they thought they could 'cure' homosexuality. Did it become legal in Australia the same time as here ??
What a turn up with who the granddaughter's father is.
Not saying for you catchup watchers.

Grannyknot Fri 12-Feb-16 14:07:40

Now it's gone all "Cuckoos Nest" in more ways than one.

James is breaking my heart.

ninathenana Fri 12-Feb-16 14:29:01

I was startled yesterday to see the modern blue car pull up at the mansion. It took me a minute or two to realise that this is the new series and we've moved on about 50 yrs grin

Grannyknot Fri 12-Feb-16 15:33:19

nina yes but with flashbacks. That's the same actress who plays Olivia, innit (the blond granddaughter). She's much better in her native accent.

I missed the first ever episode it had already dropped off "On Demand" when I got on to this (from Series 1, Episode 2). So I'm not sure how it all started, but I can more or less work it out.

Mamie Fri 12-Feb-16 19:03:18

If you Google episode guide you can find out what happens but now I know how it ends.grin

Grannyknot Sat 13-Feb-16 22:21:43

mamie I shall avoid doing that then!

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT! However:

I need help in understanding how the bluff with Anna (as baby) was passed off, given that George is oblivious to the truth?

Also, how or why did Elizabeth "rescue" or help Jack? He isn't a relative, is he?

HannahLoisLuke Tue 16-Feb-16 16:49:55

I'm up to date now and formed some opinions of the characters. I can't take to Sarah, she's too cool and bland, never an expression crosses her face. Maybe there's turbulence underneath. Love Roy, a genuinely lovely man. And Caroline, beautiful and warm. I like Olivia and James, and Harry. Anna and Gino not much.
The old girl is a stereotypical baddie, but may show a heart yet. Regina, no hope.
Mrs Collins reminds me of Hilda Ogden in the far distant days when I watched Coronation Street.
As for the story, just enough to keep me watching. Thanks to all of you who put me on to it.

Grannyknot Thu 18-Feb-16 08:24:02

I get the relationship with Jack now (as explained in flashbacks in Series 2) smile

Thank goodness James was sprung from that hell-hole! That was terrifying.

Anna is my favourite character in the series.

ninathenana Fri 19-Feb-16 15:43:52

OMG !!
So sad, I'm blubbing

Grannyknot Fri 19-Feb-16 15:54:44

I was emotional too. sadblush

I love the closing scenes always such beautiful music. smile

Mamie Fri 19-Feb-16 16:06:44

Does it carry on next week or do we have to wait?
I go and watch it in the bedroom now - OH hates it! grin
