"Alas poor Scruff, I knew him well, who could forget that pungent smell?"

Iam64 Thu 18-Aug-16 19:22:12

Who did phoenix? Oh yes, Neil and Susan. It was such a scandal wasn't it, because Susan is a Horrobin, well she was and it was expected she'd lead Neil a dance. Not that you'd think she came from a 'rough' family, given her current snobby, superior presentation. She did, after all, hide her brother, who'd been an armed robber. The entire family were seen as bad lots by the Ambridge residents - were the Horrobins from Penny Hasset?

She was probably seen as a hussy, who'd snared a good lad in Neil. In truth, apart from hiding the armed robber brother, she has been in Neil's eyes at least, a good wife! Ambridge brings out all these dates phrases for which I am sorry.

Luckygirl Thu 18-Aug-16 19:24:45

But such a gossipy snob - mind you, Neil puts her in her place now and again!

Gracesgran Thu 18-Aug-16 19:25:25

Miffed you may be phoenix but I do not like being sworn at. I looked it up and it said:

FFS
exclamation
vulgar slang
for * * * * * sake! (used as an expression of annoyance)
and the stars I have used do not replace ‘flip’ in the online example.

This appears to be a standard meaning and, as you had not said "for flips sake", which it would have been quite possible for you to do, I had to assume that you were using standard internet shorthand - not an unreasonable thing to do and I do not enjoy be sworn at phoenix.

I don't "get" treating characters as real people and coming out with criticisms as if they were real people known to those doing criticising, but I was one person making a comment and suddenly several people feel they have to attack. How sad is that? You do not need to take any notice of the comment if you don’t agree – just get on with posting as you always do and yes Elegran I know Everyone who reads the discussion can comment on it I think that is what I said a couple of posts before yours, but I am part of everyone too.

*phoenix I don’t doubt that you are as you say … actually quite erudite on a good day but why stoop to this language in that case? When you do you must expect the person on the receiving end of it to object.

phoenix Thu 18-Aug-16 19:29:11

Graces there's a lot of things that you don't seem to "get".....

(sigh)

Gracesgran Thu 18-Aug-16 19:54:09

Possibly my misfortune phoenix but I am not actually comfortable about people gossiping in a critical way about real people either but I am very aware that is not true of everyone so.

I imagine there are many things each of us sees differently to others but I am not sure that would deserve an all out attack and abuse from other members of the thread.

LullyDully Thu 18-Aug-16 19:54:36

Also.Henry has had 5 safe days without Rob. Hope it's done him some good. Did.I get in right that Justin is not going to give Rob a job due to Lillian's pleas.?

Gracesgran Thu 18-Aug-16 19:54:59

so

phoenix Thu 18-Aug-16 20:08:08

Oh, must have missed that, the bit about Rob not getting a job with Justin, thanks Lully will check it out!

DaphneBroon Thu 18-Aug-16 20:12:24

That would be satisfying (not getting a job from Justin) another chink in his overweening self-esteem. We might see him crack yet!

Gracesgran Thu 18-Aug-16 20:24:11

In last night's episode Justin apologised for the way he spoke to Lillian and Lillian said she had gone too far. Justin said he conceded that Lillian might have a point about "Titchener"; that the parting of the ways was a little "mysterious perhaps" so, when he comes in on Friday Justin is going to grill him on exactly what happened at Berrow Farm between him and Charley.

Justin and Lillian were not in tonight's episode - it was mainly about A Level results. I just hope Justin goes back to Charley with whatever Rob says and Charley is so angry (we know the sort of thing 'Rob' will say) he starts to add to the information being gathered.

Luckygirl Thu 18-Aug-16 20:25:23

I too missed the bit about Justin not giving a job to Rob. I think he said to Lilian that he would talk to Charlie before seeing Rob. I may be quite wrong and have dreamed all this!

merlotgran Thu 18-Aug-16 20:31:37

Sadly, Justin didn't have a very high opinion of Charlie which is one of the reasons he was packed off to Scotland. Rob will have Justin eating out of his hand at the interview I fear.

The job intrigues me. Estate manager for Damara Capital? Rob was a dairy manager. Surely in RL Justin would advertise for someone with land management qualifications and experience but Hey Ho! That's TA for you hmm

Gracesgran Thu 18-Aug-16 20:57:56

I agree merlot, it seems to be slightly lazy writing; perhaps a device to bring Charley back(?).

I'm not sure that Justin's opinion of Charlie is so bad but then I thought Lillian would turn him down. At one point I thought Charlie might be his son and they were keeping it under wraps so he could 'learn' the business. I think that was just an overactive imagination filling in the gaps though, sadly. I would love it to be true and for Rob to come out with his usual 'it was all his fault and look what a shocking person he is' stuff only to be told by Justin that he knows Charlie to well too believe him though.

Iam64 Thu 18-Aug-16 21:12:07

I have an active Archers imagination but Gracesgran, I'd never imagined Charlie as Justin's son, that would be a turn up for the book. Justin always seemed critical of Charlie, didn't value him and I seem to remember him asking Charlie what he'd done to lose a valuable member of staff like Rob. Charlie didn't tell Justin Rob had been fiddling the books because Rob was blackmailing him (was that about Ian and Adam, and the new year eve snog between Charlie and Adam?) What does Lilian know? Jennifer knows about blocking the culvert. When, if ever, will any of this be widely known within the village?!

I fear merlot is right and Rob will charm Justin, who has already indicated he sees Rob as a man of calibre that Ambridge (cricket) will miss. Narcisissts like Rob are often charming, likeable, manipulative and above all, very good at playing/acting a part. What is this job that has suddenly become vacant.

The notion though that Rob will be honest with Justin about the reason he left Berrow Farm is so unlikely, it will never happen. Rob will blame Charlie and probably tell lies about Charlie.

Gracesgran Thu 18-Aug-16 21:27:32

I saw it more as not wanting to overpraise him, not attract attention Iam. When he sent him to Scotland I decided he was making the best of what he saw as a difficult situation but he didn't try to find out what had happened so he could (I was stretching it by this stage) be protecting Charlie. Fathers don't always value their sons (I'm sure Shakespeare will have covered that ... King Lear with daughter's certainlysmile)

I agree with you about the character of a narcissist but he can believe in himself too much at times and go over the top. I believe narcissistic pyschopaths are good at manipulation with certain types of people - they pick up on the vulnerability - and I don't see Justin as vulnerable. They tend to get caught (if they do) because they become complacent and over-confident and I am hoping 'Rob' does with Justin. I agree he will lie about Charlie but if he goes too far ... Charlie seems to have worked for Justin for a long time (even if he isn't his songrin)

Iam64 Thu 18-Aug-16 21:37:01

That really is Shakespearian Gracesgran. I love your King Lear connection.

I agree with you that Justin doesn't seem vulnerable but is he a good judge of character? He has already described Rob in positive terms and seems likely to continue to see him as such, unless Rob appears arrogant and over confident in his interview. Narcissistic psychopaths can be found in positions of power (politics, Chief Executive Officers etc) and are often only found out after many years of charming nations…….

I'll be a very happy addict if Justin rumbles Rob.

Gracesgran Thu 18-Aug-16 22:04:37

As we've gone all Shakespeare we shall have to wait for

To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow,

and, as the next line is Creeps in this petty pace from day to day petty pace just about sums up how much the SWs are giving us at the moment.

(notably from the Scottish play so perhaps the 'King' (Justin) will be overcome by our protagonist in the interview ... or notsmile

Sorry I think it being 'A' level results day has taken me back to all that learning although that play was 'O' level for me grin Back to reality. I think Josh has made a very good choice smile

Gracesgran Thu 18-Aug-16 22:06:26

day to day - petty pace

LullyDully Fri 19-Aug-16 08:39:08

I.probably misread that but between Lillian and Justin about Rob so will.register. Sorry to muddle you all up. Just wishful thinking.

Gracesgran Fri 19-Aug-16 10:00:10

My re-writing of the script to make Justin Charlie's dad is wishful thinking too LD. Sadly I have a feeling the SWs like to have us screaming pointing out the errors to the radio so I think he will offer him the job sad

merlotgran Fri 19-Aug-16 19:22:51

Aha! Rob's arrogance could be his downfall.

Now, where did I put Charlie's phone number? grin

Iam64 Fri 19-Aug-16 20:10:13

You left it by the kettle merlot, so it would be there to remind you when you next make a cup of tea. Go to it, Charlie could be so helpful, plus I always had a soft spot for him. I suspect he may have been in love with Adam. Adam's behaviour is a mirror image of Brian's as a younger man. That must be modelling, rather than genes I think.

phoenix Fri 19-Aug-16 20:15:01

Charlie was very much in love with Adam, well, he fancied him something rotten at least!

Is Justin really offering Rob a job shock?

LullyDully Fri 19-Aug-16 20:47:30

Strange way of employing someone. Don't they have to go through the correct channels and give others a chance to apply? We had to in school or we were hauled across the coals. Equal apps and all that.

merlotgran Fri 19-Aug-16 21:18:05

I agree, Lully. Damara has estates and nobody's running them?

Rob's a dairy manager so what exactly will he be doing?

If it's arable land then they need an arable manager.
