It is annoying when they leave it to the viewer to tie up the loose ends and work out what will happen. That's the job of the writer, and not to do it is a cop-out. I found it frustrating that we didn't know whether the real killer would confess (or be denounced) ; the social worker, who was the central character at the start, was cast adrift and became just collateral damage. Pity, because some parts of it were very good.
